NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

As for USC, it doesn't matter if they knew. Compliance requires them to monitor such things and that is why there are compliance departments.

Actually, it matters a lot what is known or should've been known. So much so that Ohio State did not have to vacate wins over Troy Smith but Oklahoma had to vacate wins over Rhett Bomar.

The investigation is ongoing inasmuch as people with facts are willing to talk and show real evidence. Now it appears someone is willing to talk. So perhaps we'll get somewhere.

Whether you have a grudge against ESPN or USC or not, it's clear that most on this board do. Hence the whining comment.

As for USC and compliance, yes they have an office to oversee things, but there's no "lack of institutional control" unless the problem is something other than an isolated incident. Which at this point, there's no evidence that mass cash payments are being made at USC anymore than they are being made at other schools. Let's face it, the MC situation may be been completely blown out of proportion by ESPN and all major news outlets, but considering that MC was the one making the accusations, it's a bit different from this case where no one has been willing to divulge anything. MC told anyone & everyone who would listen that he was getting benefits and that the staff was involved or at least was aware. Meanwhile, he was driving that car and Troy was taking $500....it was a perfect storm.

I see this reporting of this situation completely differently because of that. Now, the facts resulting from all this will prove Reggie & family as takers just as the facts exonerated JT and tOSU, but that'll take time. Meanwhile, I don't see where anyone will crucify Pete Carroll for something he likely didn't know about.

I'm content to let it play out without any worry about it.

I think a finding of "lack of institutional control" very unlikely. But there is a real possibility that USC could be hit with a "failure to monitor" determination by the NCAA, resulting in some form of probation.

I'd consider the Jarrett apartment situation, where most of the rent was being paid by Leinart's father, as being something that could contribute to such a finding. So the Bush thing isn't an "isolated incident".

You're right, but that is an unintended meaning of the sentence I wrote, methomps. My meaning was that, whether they knew or not, the matter still requires investigation and possible penalties.

Possibly. We'll see as this continues to unfold.

Still seems like an isolated incident to me. The Jarrett Leinart thing is so completely different it's hard to know how that factors into things. In any event, it will be interesting to see what this guy has to say and what hard evidence he can actually produce. It would be nice to have documents rather than just talk.

Both involve players getting benefits extra benefits and in both cases the players should have known they were in the wrong. It begs the question of how far the school was going to make sure players knew and followed the rules. It puts USC in the position of needing to provide evidence that they did so.

Most importantly it opens the door for a look around to see if anything else was untoward. If I am a Trojan fan that is the part I am sweating - that third shoe is the scary one.

You assume this full body cavity search hasn't already occured.

He did live in the same complex as Leinart, IIRC.

I don't think there was ever a doubt for me that RB broke the rules. Theres way too many red flags that came up and it's obvious from a cursory inspection that there is no way his parents could have afforded all of the things we saw with their professions.
That said, it makes no sense (to me) to punish the current players. If they do want to hit USC, I think vacating games is the way to do it -- and obviously making it very difficult for the DAC to let him keep the award.

Bush faces suit; NCAA next

By Jason Cole and Charles Robinson, Yahoo! Sports
October 30, 2007

Former USC and Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush and his family are being sued by the co-founder of a failed sports marketing agency, according to a filing Tuesday in San Diego County Court.

The lawsuit, filed by attorneys for New Era Sports & Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Lake, alleges Bush and his family failed to repay a wide array of benefits they received from New Era while Bush played for the Trojans. One of Lake's attorney's, Paul Wong, said that in addition to filing the suit, Lake has agreed to meet with NCAA investigators this week to discuss Bush's involvement with New Era Sports.

"I believe the complaint speaks for itself," Wong said. "? We're looking forward to meeting with the NCAA on Friday. Beyond that, I'm not at liberty to discuss any details."

Trojan trouble

By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports
October 30, 2007

Tuesday afternoon, Lloyd Lake, ex-con, former aspiring sports marketer and worst nightmare for the University of Southern California football program, dropped a lawsuit in a San Diego County courthouse and a bomb on the Trojans.

While few of the allegations are new, the lawsuit, and Lake's scheduled meeting with NCAA investigators, changes the entire dynamic of the Reggie Bush case. It is the single worst development that could have happened to USC.

About the only thing, if anything, that can save the Trojans is Bush settling the nearly $300,000 suit between now and Lake's Friday meeting with the NCAA.
