NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

"Mr. Jarrett made a mistake, and we believe that had he known he was required to pay his full share of the rent for the apartment, he would not have chosen to live there,"
sorry methomps, but he would have to be a complete retard to not know this.....especially with all the preaching carroll claims he does about what his student athletes can and can't do.

So he couldn't afford more than 650 a month while he was living there, but now he'll find over 5k with no problem?

I don't know where you're getting that he can't afford more than 650 a month. The 650 is what he and Leinart were each paying for their 2004 apartment. The problem was that people were following Leinart home, so Bob Leinart moved them to Medici and picked up the balance.

BTW, I'll be living in Medici this year

After this move by the NCAA, the only thing that I can think is that OSU is too hard on its student-athletes relative to what it needs to be. Think about it: (1) TS takes $500 and OSU suspends him for two games; (2) Jarrett takes over $12K and USC does not suspend him at all, and neither does the NCAA. If OSU wanted to take the low road like USC has (see also the Mualuga incident), it seems that we could get off a lot easier. Then again, I'm glad we have higher standards and Tressel isn't running the same type of program that Carroll is.

eh, they're not really comparable. Jarrett wasn't taking seedy money from a seedy booster. I think he should have known what he was doing was wrong, but Troy absolutely knew what he did was wrong.

Tressell didn't suspend Smith for 2 games. In fact, I remember him appealing to the NCAA to have TS eligible for the first game last season. As usual, don't let facts get in the way of your arguments.

It's funny that you continue to harp on the Rey Maualuga situation considering Tressell did not suspend Boone for any games. Luckily, Tressell and Carroll realize that the politically correct response (game suspensions) is not always the best course.

So you're ok with Jarrett getting absolutely no punishment?
I don't have $5,000 laying around, so that's a punishment. All I was saying is you can't compare Troy and Jarrett. What Troy did was calculated and knowingly wrong. Jarrett might have calculated the whole thing to pay less money for rent, but I doubt it.

Still, he should have known. I don't buy that defense.

Sorry, fella, but you're the one who apparently has disregarded the facts. I highlighted the relevant part.

Why was Troy Smith suspended? - OSU athletic director Andy Geiger said: "We got some information. We researched it and investigated it ourselves. We discovered there was truth to the incident report. We declared him ineligible and reported it to the NCAA and we’re now applying for reinstatement.

I'm not going to quibble much more with you here, but you're trying to say that it's a punishment to have to pay $5K even though you've gotten over $12K free rent?!? I'd take that $7K+ swing every day of the week.

Still, he should have known. I don't buy that defense.

You don't buy the "USC defense" (see also Reggie Bush's claim that he didn't know his parents were living in the house for free)? Apparently the NCAA does buy it.

Yes, OSU declared him inelgible, but not for two games. You tried to make it sound like OSU punished him with a 2-game suspension. If that were the case, it would make no sense for them to then ask the NCAA to make him eligible for the season opener.

The NCAA dictated the suspension for the 05 season opener.

OK, but 1 (TS) > 0 (Jarrett). Hence my original point. Look, my personal bias aside, I think USC fans are naiive if they do not think that things need to seriously change around LA in order for USC to not implode by way of NCAA sanctions; the football team's many transgressions of the past year are indicative of the need for such change.
