NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

Report: USC could be stripped of '04 title | CollegeFootballTalk.com

"[Vacated wins] would be the BCS' cue. Its policy stipulates: "When the NCAA or a conference makes a finding of violations ... and imposes a sanction of forfeiture or vacation of contests in which an ineligible student-athlete participated, we will presume that vacation of participation in a BCS bowl game is warranted." That's if the player in question participated in that BCS game or in victories that led to the bowl berth.
Sweet.

Difference being that Alabama didn't commit any violations during their national title season...

That we're aware of...

I know the NCAA and the BCS are two different entities, and that the NCAA does not have a champion for football.

However, isn't it true that teams on probation can't win championships in other NCAA sports?

I can't remember where I read that...

I'll be honest, I'm looking forward to a re-do of this should titles be taken away:

tOSU was still on basketball probation when playing in the Title Game in 2007, so it's not a cut-and-dried thing that probation excludes a team from having a chance to win a championship.

The NCAA can bar teams from being able to compete for championships in certain sports, but it depends on the severity of the violations and their resultant penalties.

You guys are talking about probation..but that isn't the issue.

USC is facing forfeiture or vacation of wins accumulated during the title run, which is a MUCH different animal than just being on probation.

Being on probation means business as usual...but don't get caught outside the lines again during your probationary period or the penalties will be massive...so participation during probation is a given. Forfeiture is a whole different kettle of fish....

EDIT: My bad....I guess you guess were talking about titles for USC going forward if they are put on probation.

Pete Carrol responds:

We're talking about probation, man. I mean, how silly is that? We're talking about probation. . . . I know it's important . . . I honestly do. But we're talking about probation, man. What are we talking about? Probation?

Followed by Kiffin:

"Probation?! Don't talk about probation! You kidding me?! Probation?! I just hope we can win another game!"

This is a 'no joke'. My minister is a USC grad, and I had been giving him a ration about the violations.....two weeks ago he came up to me and said that the NCAA was not going to put USC on probation, because Reggie Bush was going to pay back the agent. Kinda looked at him, and asked 'doesn't that sorta prove that Bush took money/favors illegally?'.

Now, that's rumor, not sure whether my preacher got it straight from above or read it on the USC web site or not.....but it certainly goes to what other scribers have intimated, that USC will not be punished, as they're probably the ONLY west coast TV draw. Very unfair. But I don't see the NCAA having the cojones to give a big school the 'death penalty' a la SMU, especially one that draws from the LA Basin market.

Just sayin'
