NCAA Investigation into Indiana Basketball Program

Re: A Thursday night meeting between Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan and the school's basketball team became heated when players threatened to quit if the AD follows through with a plan to remove Kelvin Sampson as the Hoosiers' coach, two sources have told CBSSports.com.

If the Indiana basketball players are really that stupid maybe the NCAA should investigate for "academic improprietaries" within the IU basketball program too.

I think the players have foolishly forced IU's hand.

I think he was already going to be suspended today and fired within 10 days (because of the appeal process), but now that it's public information that the players have threatened to quit, how can IU retain him? That would only give the appearance of the "inmates running the asylum", and would be even worse for IU.

He's got to go - and the players will then return to the court. Are White and Gordon going to decide to not play in front of NBA scouts for the rest of the season? I don't think so.

The Decision Has Been Made.....

.....details to be released later.

Indiana poised to announce Sampson's fate as coach

Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan has made his decision on whether Kelvin Sampson will continue to coach the Hoosiers and is discussing it with university president Michael McRobbie this morning, as well, a high-ranking IU official said.
Greenspan will then meet with Sampson and a statement from the university will be issued later Friday. The official said Sampson is not privy to his fate. Sampson spent Thursday preparing for the Hoosiers' Big Ten game on Saturday at Northwestern.

The IU official would not comment on the school's decision.

"No decision was made until this morning, I cannot stress that enough," the official said in reference to various reports Thursday that claimed a decision to fire Sampson already had been made. "All those reports about it being made yesterday and of the players being told and of the team threatening not to play were not true. It's pure science fiction.

Maybe it's all a plan to get the team to quit, bring back bobby knight, and have season two of Knight School.....only this time he has to create a whole team from scratch.

I'd watch that in a heartbeat.

Have I mentioned that this situation is breaking my heart? :slappy:

What's ahead for IU's program?
Sampson's fate could play role in possible punishments

The fate of Kelvin Sampson could be determined today, but other big questions will hover over Indiana University for months to come.

The biggest: How might the men's basketball program be punished by the NCAA for five potentially "major" rules violations? Will the Hoosiers get hit with a postseason ban, probably the most severe possible penalty?
It wouldn't happen for next month's NCAA Tournament -- unless IU takes the highly unlikely step of self-imposing that punishment -- but it could happen next season. If it did, it would mark a stunning fall for the Hoosiers, who haven't had a major NCAA rules violation since 1960, and none in basketball.

I don't understand why they should not be penalized. They hire the guy who broke NCAA rules and then they don't monitor him closely enough and he breaks the same rule again. I think this ranks right up there with O'Brien's violation. It might even be greater because Sampson violated recruiting rules. In

I'm not clear on why some here think the basketball players were stupid to voice their ultimatum. They have darn little leverage as collegiate athletes; they are simply using it on one of the rare occasions when they can. They obviously have loyalty to Sampson.

Source: Players support Sampson

Indiana University men's basketball players walked out of a Thursday night meeting with athletic director Rick Greenspan, refusing to play the rest of the season if coach Kelvin Sampson is dismissed, a person familiar with the situation said today.
During the meeting, Greenspan told players about what course of action the school might take regarding Sampson, the source said. The source was told Jamarcus Ellis walked out of the meeting.
IU plays at Northwestern on Saturday. The source said players will follow the lead of D.J. White.
"As far as them playing, it depends on D.J.," the source said. "He's the leader. He's the cornerstone. Whatever D.J. does, they're all going to do."

If they do walk, it would be interesting to see what happens to their scholarships. It seems to me like the IU Administration is afraid. At least it didn't take Andy long after he heard the facts. Ohio State paid for it but they did the right thing. IU = chicken shit.

You can't spelll mUtIny without IU.

Seems some players are threatening to quit if IU puts Sampson out to pasture. (Sportinng News)

Greenspan issued a rhetorical threat based on ending their season right there and then - to no avail.

Avast ye mateys! Sampson was clearly not running a renegade program, it's pirated instead. Prediction - Friday could be Mutiny like a Pirate day at IU. :)
