NCAA Investigation into Indiana Basketball Program

It's time for Hoosiers to clean house over flap

When Indiana University athletics director Rick Greenspan hired basketball coach Kelvin Sampson ? most likely by telephone ? he knew that Sampson came with heavy baggage, or at least pounds and pounds of telephone bills.
Sampson was sanctioned by the NCAA while he was at the University of Oklahoma for making more than 550 illegal telephone calls to recruits. Ma Bell and Verizon loved the guy.

But how smart can he be to come to a university like Indiana and do the same thing, do it at a school where Bobby Knight ? love him or hate him ? never once drew the slightest attention from the NCAA?
There is no question that Sampson must go. Right away. Right now. The guy obviously is incurable.
ESPN broadcaster and Sarasota, Fla., resident Dick Vitale popped into Reds spring training camp on Monday and we agree on Greenspan's future, too. He should go. Right away. Right now.

Indianapolis TV station reports Indiana coach is out

Posted: Thursday February 21, 2008 1:32PM; Updated: Thursday February 21, 2008 2:13PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indianapolis television station WTHR is reporting that Indiana men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson won't coach another game for the Hoosiers.
The station reported that assistant coach Dan Dakich will take over as interim coach for the rest of the season.
The NCAA has accused Sampson and some members of his staff of five major recruiting violations over improper telephone calls to high school players. The school is reviewing the allegations and has set tomorrow as a deadline for a report and recommendation on action in the case.
WTHR also reports that Sampson and IU will either reach a financial settlement by tomorrow ending his employment, or he will be suspended pending termination under his contract's terms.
IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre has declined to comment on the report.

Looks like the reporter may have jumped the gun, but I wouldn't bet any vCash on Sampson surviving tomorrow.

Status unresolved, Sampson preps for next game

Kelvin Sampson's fate as Indiana men's basketball coach remained unsettled Thursday as a university official dismissed a report claiming Sampson has been fired.

The official said Thursday afternoon that athletic director Rick Greenspan has not met with Indiana president Michael McRobbie and, to the best of his knowledge, Sampson's job status hasn't been determined.

Two options are being considered for resolving Sampson's status, the official said:

- Indiana could suspend Sampson without pay, in which case, according to Sampson's contract, the coach would have 10 days to appeal.
- Indiana could allow Sampson to continue coaching the 22-4 Hoosiers throughout the 90 days the NCAA granted the school in its notice of allegations and just hope for the best.

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE BASKETBALL - Sources: Sampson fired at Indiana

As it turns out, Indiana's 77-68 victory over Purdue last Tuesday will be Kelvin Sampson's last as the Hoosiers head coach. Sampson was informed early Thursday that he will no longer be the coach at Indiana, numerous sources told FOXSports.com.

The official announcement is expected to come Friday, when the university's self-imposed seven-day investigation period ends.
When asked to confirm Sampson's firing, Indiana director of media relations J.D. Campbell told FOXSports.com, "I don't know that to be true."
Campbell also said no official announcement was currently scheduled for Friday.
According to a source, there was a team meeting at 3:00 p.m. ET. All signs point to Indiana assistant Dan Dakich, a former Hoosier player and assistant coach under Bob Knight, taking the reins for the remainder of the season.

You can't spelll mUtIny without IU.

Seems some players are threatening to quit if IU puts Sampson out to pasture. (Sportinng News)

A meeting between Indiana University athletic director Rick Greenspan and the Hoosiers basketball team Thursday night turned rancorous when players threatened to quit if Kelvin Sampson is removed, CBSSports.com reports. Two sources told the website that Greenspan met with players to prepare them for today's official announcement that Sampson would either be suspended or terminated. Before Greenspan was finished speaking, a player stood up and said, "if Sampson ain't coaching, we ain't playing."

Greenspan issued a rhetorical threat based on ending their season right there and then - to no avail.

The sources' account says Greenspan then rhetorically asked if he should just cancel the whole season. The player responded, "We don't care what you do. But if Sampson ain't coaching, we ain't playing. Then the players walked out.

Avast ye mateys! Sampson was clearly not running a renegade program, it's pirated instead. Prediction - Friday could be Mutiny like a Pirate day at IU. :)

A Thursday night meeting between Indiana athletic director Rick Greenspan and the school's basketball team became heated when players threatened to quit if the AD follows through with a plan to remove Kelvin Sampson as the Hoosiers' coach, two sources have told CBSSports.com.

According to the sources, after Greenspan informed five selected players -- namely D.J. White, Eric Gordon, Kyle Taber, Lance Stemler and Adam Ahlfeld -- of his decision to replace Sampson he called a meeting with the entire team in an attempt to "prepare" them for Friday's official announcement that Sampson would either be suspended or terminated in time for the Hoosiers' weekend game at Northwestern. But before Greenspan finished his speech, the sources said an unidentified player stood up and insisted "if Sampson ain't coaching, we ain't playing" and that Greenspan responded with what he thought was a rhetorical question.
