NCAA Investigation into Indiana Basketball Program

This is really a mess. The last thing the B10 needs in basketball is for yet another of the major, traditional conference programs to drop off the edge. Even if they fire Sampson this week, begin a hiring search, get it RIGHT this time, and only manage a slap on the wrist from the NCAA, it's going to be several years before Indiana gets their ship righted.

That leaves the conference with three consistently strong programs (MSU, Wisky and tOSU), a surprisingly resurgent Purdue, plus one with potential (Minny). Illinois is off the map right now as is Michigan. If/when IU joins them, we're looking at a really weak conference for a few years.

I would think this should be the standard escape clause. That way the signees would suffer no loss of playing time or have to lay off a year.

point two: Matta only did what was right in his eyes and I think that shows his character.

I agree wholeheartedly about what this says about Matta's character. It reflects recruiting realities as well--hard to believe all the Thad Five would have come unless he did make those promises.

Edit: Didn't see that BB73 said exactly the same thing.

I hope that whatever is causing the mass delusions in Indiana is not airborne, or else we in Ohio are next

The only thing that makes any sense in that thread is the unfortunate fact of fan support (or lack thereof) of a non top ten team at tOSU. I hope after this hiccup of a year that fan support, and home court advantage will be more indicative of what a Coach like Matta and a team like tOSU deserve.

It is time that the OSU Administration wakes up and puts the students courtside and buys out the PSLs or something. That certainly would improve the atmosphere at least.

Possibly it's an anti-virus, pop-up, or membership thing, but I can't see the link either.

I'll help you guys out who can't get the link to work

To paraphrase;

Indiana screwed up bad by hiring Sampson, though he has done nothing wrong. We (IU) should have hired Thad Matta last time, and definitely should this time. Indiana has soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more to offer than tOSU, they would have no problem bringing coach Matta to Bloomington. The only thing that kept Matta at tOSU last time was the Indiana connection of Conley and Oden, no such thing exists now. The black cloud hanging over tOSU's BBall program was potentially much much worse than the one at IU now, so that won't stop Matta from seeing IU's potential and coming to IU.

Honestly that is pretty close to the content of that thread, only a couple of level headed guys shoot down the likelyhood of Matta to IU, and most of their points are shot down by other posters.

The big doofus football playing guy from revenge of the Nerds is the avatar of one of the main proponents of the Matta to IU thread, sad to say that the character had much more intelligent dialog.

I put my AD hat on and keep tweaking my formula for basketball profits. No matter what value I plug in for "atmosphere" I can't make it come out greater than the revenue I generate from PSLs.

It is ALL about the money.

I wonder if IU fans realize that IU basketball is closer to NC State than it is Kansas, Carolina, UCLA or Kentucky. The great ones are great regardless of who is coaching. I'm still waiting to see some post-Knight success other than that one fluke final four run under Davis.

College basketball roundup: Decision due soon on Indiana's Sampson
Indiana could decide coach's fate next week
Saturday, February 16, 2008 2:49 AM

Associated Press

Kelvin Sampson's future as Indiana's coach could be determined by next week.
University president Michael McRobbie said yesterday that the school will conduct a new investigation into NCAA accusations that Sampson committed five major rules violations.
A school investigation last year revealed Sampson and his assistants made more than 100 impermissible calls. That occurred while Sampson was on NCAA probation for making 577 improper phone calls between 2000 and 2004 while coaching Oklahoma.
Athletic director Rick Greenspan, university counsel Dorothy Frapwell and faculty representative Bruce Jaffee were asked to run the investigation and then recommend by next Friday what steps the university should take.
