Early impression: Love the game. Huge improvement from 13.

I've got to agree with this. I haven't run a full dynasty yet by any means, so I can't comment on recruiting, but early impression is good. The fixes in the option game have been much better than last year, you couldn't run a Flexbone really, it was broken. While I haven't gotten to play with recruiting much yet, I do seem to be saving some time since I don't have to call each recruit week after week, I can set it and forget it for some weeks. I really like the new menu for recruiting too. You can see everything you want for each recruit as far as who leads, skills, pitch/bonus points, etc without having to hit Triangle and wait for the information to load. Everything is right there in a form on your right.

Haven't played a lot of games yet, I've been playing around with features, setting up playbooks, and tweaking some rosters (97 is way too high for a Sophomore QB, even if you're Johnny Manziel). I played around with the Nike Trainer stuff. Most of it was old hat, but I really like running the Shovel Option. That looks really tough to defend, and it was quite a bit of fun. Anybody running with this?

The shovel option is a great addition but it is much more challenging in the actual game. The trainer has a very low difficulty setting. In games on challenging settings that shovel area gets congested and risks interceptions. You have to be very sharp with your decision making.

I am still too new to this option game but so far the changes are wonderful but a little too effective. Perhaps once we get experience it will be easier to prepare for the wb keeper while still pursuing the back.

Heilman offenses finally live up to their rating. You better play sharp d or you will get worked.

I don't have the game yet, but I thought the inside zone reads worked way too well in the demo. You could basically run it all game.

does anybody have a particular playbook they like? I'm partial to Air Raid myself. Just curious if people stick with what their team runs ( I assume most of you play with osu and the Pistol), or if you use something else.

I've run with Notre Dame's playbook quite a bit, but last year I started playing around with Air Raid /w a Texas State dynasty. Before Air Raid I tried running the Navy Option, but it was borked last year. I found that I didn't like running Pistol formation all that much in Air Raid, but I did like the extra Shotgun/Spread formations. This year I'm going to give the Option another shot with the changes that were made.

Alabama's playbook for defense.

They have a couple combo coverages with Roby in man that are so hard for people to diagnose. You can get creative in which linebacker you're blitzing and I'm hearing Shazier is a nightmare off the edge.

You can't select to use Alabama's playbook for defense. The defensive playbooks are chosen by formation only. It has to be a formation they are using that has this play. Do you recall the formation?

Good god. Ummm. I can't remember the exact formation. Nickel, 3 down.
It's man with Roby and cover 3 on the backend. I used it as a part of my custom
Defense in 12 and would ruin Oregon players with it.

Edit. It's under 3-4 playbook.

Thanks. I didn't know if this was a new play or not for '14. I don't use the 3-4 so I wasn't aware. I'll have to check it out.

I traditionally use a 4-3 under as my base. I love the predator and the 43 rover variants.

I found this looking at Alabama's 3-4. Started using it. Nicknamed my defensive playbook 'Urfucked'. Works like a charm.

3-4 is pretty nasty if you have the linemen to make it work. It allows you to bring pressure/blitzes a variety of ways, it's my preferred defense if I have the personnel.

I'm running with Texas State, and I think all of my run plays are read option, triple option, or shovel option plays. Used to run triple option all the time in the early NCAA games when the Irish ran it, didn't work last year, now it somewhat works again. Shovel option is a lot of fun imo, very tough to stop if you make the right read. Pretty deadly, but I'm running on AA, not Heisman.

I just finished my first season this morning. I completely borked the recruiting, basically reached for too many 3-4 star players and fell just short on a bunch. I took over Texas State as the Offensive Coordinator and was building the team up. We took an Orange Bowl spot first year, but I only got 3 players signed by the bowl. I'm used to throwing a lot of resources towards 10 players and jumping out over the competition, mostly regardless of star level, and then throw in some promises to win out. I can't do that now. It doesn't look like promises are available anymore, and you actually have to pursue players that are within your program's star level and fit your strengths. Who woulda thought? I like it because it does add some difficulty to recruiting, but I only ended up signing about 7 more players in this one week long offseason. Fortunately I picked up some random JUCO's, 3 transfers, and some 1 & 2 stars to fill out the class. I did pickup a few freshmen ranked 75+ overall, which was huge for our team, lots of new starters this season.
