Season Showdown

NCAA Football 10: Season Showdown
Hey Everyone, by now most of you have started to hear some details about Season Showdown, and some of you got uncomfortably close with me as I talked with Pasta Padre and cdj about Season Showdown couple of weeks ago. This week's blog will focus on the format of Season Showdown, and in the coming weeks we will go in-depth on the Skills, Strategy, and Sportsmanship components that make up a lot of what Season Showdown is all about.
Before I dig into the feature I wanted to mention that the seasonshowdown.easports.com site will not go live until we launch on July 14th. If you try to access the site before then you will just get redirected until the site is live.
Selecting your school
First let's layout what Season Showdown is all about. This is a competition combining all Xbox 360, PS3, and EA Sports World members to put their school pride on the line to try and prove their school is the best. All you need to do is select the school you want to represent, and from that point forward every game you play will help your school's cause. Your school selection is permanent, so make sure you're picking the right school or else you might find yourself repping Miami of Ohio instead of "Da U".

Why does EA struggle so much with race/skin color (last year Larimore was Black, Mike Martin was white)?

Did Morgan Trent get a 6th year of eligibility and take Cissoko's number? Perhaps a relative sporting Campbell's number?

The models look very caricature-esque as well. Pryor's ankles are thinner than Tate's arms!

Faking depth of field (out of focus blur) is still no excuse for the real thing... nor better than no blur.

As always, they've brought along some pretty bells and whistles:

They have one person who works on the rosters for each team.. yes one person for 120 rosters. A lot of the time its a guessing game.
Interesting, thanks.

If it were me, I'd find one fan from each squad to check things for me, but that might be tough with protecting the game before release. I could see the company being strict about that.

They have some new(to me) videos up on the NCAA 10 site about season showdown. They were talking about player lock and how the camera pivots too the view of the player that you are using! Hell yes!!! This feature is going to be awesome on defense!

NCAA Football 10 Exclusive Interview Week #1 - Operation Sports
Is it possible to watch other games in your online dynasty? Maybe a gamecast to follow, using the UI from SuperSim?

A: We do not have the ability at this point to view other online dynasty games. This is something that is on our radar and we are working on overcoming the technical challenges that go into broadcasting an online game on a large scale.
Have any additions and/or changes been made to the custom stadium sounds system, i.e. new situations to play sounds, tweaking of when sounds play, how sounds fade out, the number of specific sound events one can store in one profile, etc.? Will stadium sounds have the same number of slots?
Is formation subs in or are we able to substitute our special team players?

A: Formation Subs are not a part of NCAA Football 10, you are able to make substitutions through depth chart changes and in-game packages.
Will sliders be more effective in user vs. user online dynasty games?

A: The sliders will work as they did post patch in NCAA Football 09.
Has commentary been updated and improved? (Asides from Erin Andrews)

A: One new addition to commentary this year is the addition of community submitted names. Players were able to log on to EASW and submit their last name and the phonetic spelling of their name, which we had Nessler record so they will be announced when an in-game player has that same name. We also added a lot of new commentary lines for each in-game situation. Additionally, a lot of updates were made to the Ask Corso commentary.
Any hope for more than 12 teams for Online Dynasties?

A: We are always looking into ways to improve our title every year. We did not increase the number of schools that can be user controlled, but we are investigating upping the number in the future.
What kind of defensive gameplay enhancements/tweaks have been implemented into this year's game? What has been done to tone down the wide open gameplay?

A: Here are a few things we’ve done (obviously not everything):
Pursuit Angles, Defensive line tipping passes, Man Coverage has been improved, Press/Release enhancements (from WR/DB interactions), and Adaptive AI all make a really big impact. I should also point out that players in deep zones (depending on zone coverage rating) will be more aggressive in going after passes.

So examples:
• Just taking a speed back and running outside does not equal a score (pursuit angles)
• "Elite" Corners make a bigger impact between the abilities to jam receivers and simply cover better in Man
• Adaptive AI can force you to change up your play calling. I say can because if you are a way better team, all the reaction ratings in the world will not always help the defense
• And just more incompletions in general help defense (tip passes and more realistic misses on passes)
In dynasty mode, will every game be a sellout crowd or will the crowd be based on the program and how it's doing?

A: We tuned the logic to determine the initial attendance for games. You will still see an increase in the crowd size for the first home game of the season and for rivalry games, but for teams having a poor season vs. a non-premiere opponent the crowd will be smaller.
Will CPU teams recruit players that fit their style of play or will it continue to randomly recruit position needs?

A: The CPU will continue to focus on needs as they recruit in Dynasty, they will not however just target QB’s or FB’s once they are done with those need positions. This year they will attempt to build depth at a different position based on some more logic. Basically you should not see teams with 10 QBs and 15 FBs in year 10.
Has "Jump the Snap" been tuned in such a way, that it doesn't turn players into Superheroes when they succeed?

A: With all the changes to blocking and blocking animations Jump the Snap has been tuned as well in how often it succeeds and the type of animations it gets.

User Tackle for Loss – Getting into the backfield and disrupting the other team’s running game is a key way into forcing your opponent to run a one dimensional offense. Time your defensive move with the right analog stick to get past the offensive lineman and wrap the ball carrier up to earn some Skill credits. With the addition of branchable tackles the ball carrier will have the ability to break free from a tackle by performing a move even after the defender has wrapped him up. You can also stop a ball carrier’s momentum and have another defender help complete the tackle.
User Sack –Since we have added the ability for QB’s to release the ball after a sack animation has started this one is going to be a little tougher than in years past. Previously the QB would always tuck the ball once a sack started, but before you cry foul and think that you are going to see a QB fire a laser while getting blindsided by a linebacker, you will see the ball is definitely affected by the impact of the defender, which could lead to a big turnover by the defense if you launch a duck. Disrupting the offense like this could lead to the next Skills event:
User Catch – I’ve already talked about the new WR/DB interactions, but one other addition that will be a great addition for the passing game is catch steering. If you catch the ball near the sidelines the catch animations will try to turn you up field instead of forcing you out of bounds. You will also see some great new catch animations including new over the shoulder catches, so when you get past the pressing DB, and there’s no safety support as you are streaking down the sideline you won’t have to break stride to haul in the pass. Weather will affect your route running; wet conditions may cause your receiver to slip while making cuts, which could hurt your changes to make a user catch until you recover.
User Passing TD – In the User Sack section I talked about what happens when you attempt to pass the ball while getting hit, and in the User Swat section I talked about defensive linemen getting their hands up and forcing you to recognize your passing lanes, but another key improvement that will affect the passing game is the addition of offensive linemen steering defenders. This allows the tackles to fan the defensive ends out and create a true pocket. If you are a guy that scrambles as soon as the ball is snapped, you are going to find yourself scrambling right into a defensive end that has been pushed out wide. With all of these additions, before the ball has even left your hand you have to read the defense, keep an eye on the pass rush and step up in the pocket, identify your receiver, find your passing lane, and get the ball off before a defender gets a hand on you. If you are able to do all of that and convert for a touchdown, you deserve some Skill credits.
