...you can still do formation subs :/

Kind of. You can bring in the Backup QB or use a two TE set and stuff, but you can't set who you want covering kicks. You can't have your best cover linebacker, who might not be your best overall linebacker, in on all passing plays unless you actually sub him in.

On top of formation subs on offense, give me defensive assignments as well. Namely, CB covers specific WR or roll S to specific receivers as well.

As for being able to do formation subs, you can only sub the preset variety they have set, you cannot do true formation subs.

Have y'all not found the Formation Sub part of the menu? I've been running specialized formations on offense and defense since NCAA 2004. For every formation in your playbook you can choose any player on your roster that isn't already in that formation and replace any player in the formation with him.

I've used that to put my quality receiving TE's in 5 Wide formations, replacing my kick blocking and receiving formations with the best players, putting in HB's at QB in certain formations...so on and so forth...

Ya that's what I was talking about.

Not the pre-play formation stuff.

Please read the first (complete) sentences of both of those quotes. They clearly detail that they know about formation subs and that they are painfully lacking.
For every formation in your playbook you can choose any player on your roster that isn't already in that formation and replace any player in the formation with him.
False. At the risk of severe redundancy (olaf's second full sentence) You cannot bring in your undersized speed rushing DEs just for 3rd downs or coverage LBs on 3rd & long (think Tyler Moeller for Austin Spitler). You can't bring in your run stuffing LBs on 3rd & goal from the 1.
I've used that to put my quality receiving TE's in 5 Wide formations, replacing my kick blocking and receiving formations with the best players, putting in HB's at QB in certain formations...so on and so forth...
All preset, limited choices. You cannot decide what player goes where, you can pick from a list of about 8 switches, half of which are just re-shuffling the WRs or putting the starting TE into the shotgun package.

Not true, the formation sub as you are speaking of is not available in the next gen NCAA's. They had them in the xbox and PS2 versions of the games, but not in the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions.

I have a feeling they'll be back next year, however.

I read them both. No need to be condescending.

In my understanding...the first two things you mention here are of a deeper complexity than simply formation subs. The 8 or so different packages each formation have are not nearly varied enough to be really useful, I agree with that.

This I didn't know...I've never played NCAA 10 on a next gen console, only PS2.

With that being said...what you CAN do is replace your DE's in a specific formation with your undersized speed rushing DE's for situations such as 3rd downs...and replace your "regular" LB's with coverage LB's in a specific formation...you CAN decide which player goes where...

I run a 4-3 defensive playbook when I play...and the basic 4-3 formation has a regular, over, and under variation. I've got each of the 3 variations using different substitutions via formation subs for specific situations since the 3 variations of the 4-3 are extremely similar.

I would venture to say that they wouldn't have to do much extra programming once the next gen games have the formation sub feature again.

It would seem that with the coding they already have the only middle ground would be to allow you to create custom packages to go along with your custom formations. That way you can shuffle through your packages with Circle (like you do now), but they would be customized and useful to your play calling...

Formation subs are something that were disregarded for next-gen consoles because EA is too lazy and arrogant to fix basic problems with the game before releasing them.

a half decade later :shake:

Over half a decade ago, madden had matchup assignments, where you could always put your best corner on their best WR, so they couldn't line him up in the slot to pick on the backup db. Perhaps we'll get that feature around 2015.
