NCAA 08 Game Impressions

First impressions... the game runs smooth and the gameplay is great. So far I've only had time to check out campus legend because of a very annoying problem. I picked up the game and was playing it, when all of a sudden mid play it tells me the disk is unreadable and it exits the game. Not cool. It recognized it as a DVD disc... WTF? That happened 4 or 5 times before I got pissed and called Xbox support. They told me to try and delete all my game saves because it might be a corrupted file. Did that and played for a little before seeing the disc was once again unreadable. So I took the game back and swapped the disc out. Hopefully there will be no more problems with this one. That is really my only complaint about the game so far. Other than that it looks good and the EA highlight feature is cool IMO. Oh actually I do have one more complaint. EA BRING BACK CREATE A SCHOOL AND D1-AA SCHOOLS!!! That was one of my favorite parts of the game. Taking a small crap school from the lower division or one that I created and importing it to dynasty to build it up. Big disappointment that those features were not included in this game and hopefully they will be back next year. Not a big enough issue to ruin my gaming experience but still I'm disappointed.

I created an option QB, won the state title in high school. Was drafted as a 5 star, ended up going to Boise St (cause I could start there immediately). Tearin up in college so far
Do you play a high school season? Whats it like? Sounds awesome! I always thought they should take the time to do high school football games in states like Ohio, but it would be a massive massive undertaking.

My beef with the game (so far), players on the sideline wear numbers 45, and 27 lol.. they also have matt and dark gray helmets, diffrent uni's and diffrent pants.. the are missing chic harleys retired number and woodys tribute (was bored on instant replay), and malcom jenkins can't cacth a ball.. what the hell?

Maybe you got a bad copy . He has 8 or 9 picks for me and I still haven't played scUM.

Donald Washington has also been huge for me. I had 2 endzone picks returned for scores in a single game with him.
I think i did  malcom has dropped 4 in 3 games, donald has 3 so far, 2 for 6 points.. malcom can scoop and score though..

anyone else having a helluva time with the hitstick 2.0? i like the idea of being able to go high or low, but it barley ever works out the right way.

Same thing happened to me 5 times. Sounds like it isn't a disc issue.

I'm going to scour the web to see if this is a pervasive issue.

In high school you play a playoff. About 5 games. What is cool is you get to name your school and pick colors. I chose my high school, St. Xavier. What is sweet is they had a uniform that was all blue with a white helmet. Damn close minus the X on the helmet. For the championship you play at Ohio Stadium (assuming you are a Ohio player...the pre-cahmpionship games are at some crappy high school stadium). Another thing is the opponent team names are real schools. They had St. Marys, Piqua, Finneytown, and a few others. Not traditional D1 powers, but still pretty cool.

Also, don't worry about depth charts. It only took me 2 weeks to break the top 2, and 3 to be the starter. Even when you are not the starter, the first few games for the Bucks are blowouts and you will get in as a 3rd stringer near the end of the game.

BTW...I'm a running back. Since I broke huge gains in HS I had 99 speed to start. I don't break many tackles, but once I get the edge I am GONE! Beanie is now 2nd string. Poor guy, #1 recruit in the nation will now be 2nd string the rest of his college career.

In legend mode, it's too easy to scale the depth chart, and you can become a perfect passer in 2 weeks (rating wise).

It would be neat if they implemented onfield success/failure into the system. How does a few good practices overtake good games from the starter, especially a returning one? Perhaps great practices should earn you one half of reps against a cupcake squad, where your success gives you a greater chance of overtaking his spot.

This would be difficult to implement, both strategically and without being too difficult (for today's crowd of low attention spans)... but could take that element to another level.

I think it could be easier to implement for RBs, where you could slowly build up your percentage of carries.

Apparently many EA games have this dirty disc issue, not sure why.

Couple of suggestions on the disc read error:

1) You are supposed to remove the disc before powering up/off. Is this true?

2) This might work, going to try it at home:
I used to have a ton of problems with the 360 until I performed "System Maintenance." This essentially clears the cache & allows the system to be "like new". I think that since Microsoft loads several gigs of material onto the hard drive when it's produced that it bogs down the cache. Thus, causing your system to be slower than it should.

Ever since I ran this maintenace, I have not had a disc error with NCAA or any other game.

Try it out:

Go to the system blade and then select memory. Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?

Just to let you know, it will not delete any of your game saves. So, don't worry about that.

I think this is just BS that the companies say to make the issue appear to be that of the users, and not something that they did wrong. They said the same thing when many of their games had dirty disk issues for the regular Xbox a few years ago. I tried it and I don't think it helped at all.

The system maintenance thing might be worth trying though.

Edit: An odd note, when I opened my game, the disc was already lose and a number of scratches. So far though (knocking on wood) it has been one of the best running NCAA games I have ever bought. I read on another forum that during the manufacturing process, the discs are coated with a light film. Some people said that by dipping a disc into boiling water for 1-2 seconds will remove the film and eliminate some dirty disc errors as well. If anyone wants to try it, I recommend Googling it first for the proper instructions.

In my season (for PS2) I'm Ohio State, 11-0 and #3 in the country. I'm behind #1 Texas and #2 Virginia Tech. If either slips in their conference championship games, I'm most likely in the national championship game.

My personal goal is to get 300 passing yards and at least 0 rushing yards for the quarterback, and 150 rushing yards for the running back. I also like to complete at least one pass to 5 receivers, 1 tight end, and 1 running back. The 300 passing yards isn't so tough, and completing passes to the 5 receivers is easy. But sometimes late in the game I'm trying to get receptions for a tight end or a back, and I throw right into a lineman playing that retarded "spy" play. God, I hate that play. Also, that 0 rushing yards is tough, because there are plays where a defensive lineman rushes in unblocked, and I have no time to throw the ball, and get sacked. For some reason, there are very few option plays, and I can't scramble or run a good quarterback draw. So I end up with negative rushing yards. And there are some games where I'm fighting to get a couple of yards out of Wells. Defenses blitz about 80% of the time, in some games, and I've never been very good at running the football.

Anyway, I've got somewhere between 3,000 and 3,300 passing yards for Boeckman (haven't quite been able to meet the 300 ypg for him every game), and 27-29 touchdowns for him. Beanie is leading the Heisman charge, at the moment, as he was leading the country in rushing for a while (he's still top 3), and he has probably 35 or so touchdowns (about twice that of anyone else). Laurinaitis (I'm the middle linebacker pretty much every play) broke the single-game Ohio State record for interceptions with 6. He has about 12 now for the season (also a new Ohio State record). And I've already recruited the best 2 offensive tackles in the country, the best guard, the best defensive end, and the best strong safety.

All in all, since I had the money, I guess it's worth it for me to get the game for PS2. But if I didn't have much money (like back in school), and I already had NCAA 2007, I wouldn't buy 2008. And 2007 is probably a lot cheaper, so I'd probably just buy that.

I have been playing this game since the original PlayStation, and have every version of the game published for Xbox up to the current one. I only played last year's version ('07) for about two hours before going back to '06. I didn't like the gameplay, and the Ohio State roster was butchered so bad that playing with the previous year's roster was more tolerable by comparison. I'm just too much of a roster nut to do that again this year though, so I'm trying to get used to the gameplay. Fortunately, I'm able to edit class for existing players on the roster so everything in that department is how I like it.

My gripes with the gameplay are pretty much the same as last year. I hate the system for kicking (even when I max out my kick meter, I can't get a kickoff past the 20 yard line). I think there's just too much stuff to do in the game. Compared to just two years ago, it seems you have to hit more buttons and do more things just to run a play. What does the right thumbstick do this year? I don't know. They pretty much change it every year now. I guess I'm just not as hardcore as I used to be. A lot of this stuff seems kinda cool in theory, but for somebody who actually has obligations now and can't blow off an entire day to play an entire dynsaty season in one sitting, playing a game this involved just doesn't seem to be a good way to relax for a little bit.

Yes, I have gave up on hit stick and strickly use strip ball or dive/tackle now. Hit stick get busted everytime a CB or low rated LB tries to make an open field tackle. Stick with user tackling and play it safe in the open field.

Ever since I've swapped my disc for a new one the game has run fine. I'm guessing mine was just a bad disk.

Did they get rid of that stupid and annoying feature when you are fielding a punt and the view goes down to field level??
I believe you can turn this off, I think theres a parameter under settings

I picked up the PS3 version on Wednesday. I've only played one game so far, I'm kinda disappointed some things weren't included in this first version. For one, I did not see the teams running onto the field before the game, this feature has been in the games for 4-5 years I believe, if not longer. Maybe thats something you can turn on/off, I dunno. I didn't check to see if the eye black was there, I didn't get into the equiptment, I'm assuming its not there in this version. I also didn't see an option for alternate jersies, like the green ones Notre Dame occasionally pulls out. I probably won't be doing Campus Legend, I'll probably do my Dynasty mode. As far as the 30 fps on the PS3 version, you can't notice it. The game still plays smooth, it doesn't appear choppy. The difference is pretty subtle, if you can tell it at all. I haven't the game at high resolution yet.
