Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

As a lifelong buckeye fan (been going to games since I was 6) and a Naval Academy grad, this game is a dream come true for me. I'm driving the 11 hours from my current duty station to make sure to watch my two favorite teams play (my tailgating tent will be the one that has a roof that is 1/2 USNA and 1/2 OSU). Reading this forum has reinforced what I knew about BP and OSU fans in general (at least most of us). Still deciding what to wear (OSU, Navy, Uniform...) but can't wait to be there on the 5th!

After 4 years of going to Navy games all over the country (when I was a student) I highly encourage all the cheering you can muster! Keep up the great attitude and go Bucks! (and Navy!) :oh:

Absolutely wear the uniform if allowed. That would be completely and totally awesome.

Not sure about current Naval policy, but when I was active duty Air Force up through 2001 the wearing of the uniform at sporting events was authorized, and even encouraged to an extent.

I am not exactly sure about the policy, but I will try to read on something. We are not supposed to go to restaurants (sit down type) in uniform, but I haven't looked into it in a while. I'd break policy to wear my uniform, hell, make it Military Day at the 'Shoe and all members wear their uniforms!

You're not supposed to eat at sit-down restaurants in BDUs or utility uniforms (although aircrews seem to get away with wearing their flight suits). Normal duty uniforms are fine. That was the policy for the Air Force.

The Army is different...I see Army personnel all over the place here in their BDUs. I've even seen them travel on commercial airlines in them. I guess that's because the public image if the U.S. Army is that of the BDU.

I'd guess the Navy wouldn't have a problem with their personnel attending a major college football game in their duty whites, especially a game involving their Navy team on major television....gets them some really good representation.

All battleships have been mothballed. Have to send a submarine.

A former coach/teacher of mine has his nephew profiled in that article. Really great to hear about him since it's been a few years of lost contact. I can guarantee that he would get the biggest kick out of being cheered in the Horseshoe. This is an Ohio boy who grew up dreaming of Ohio State football, like all of us. Anyone who wants to boo should really re-evaluate that decision.

Here is the policy, doesn't look good, but for a game like this, I'd be willing to break the rules!

I hurl insults, barbs, jibes, bricks, rocks, bottles, pretty much anything I can get my hands on at ND but I'm not sure I ever cast an aspersion. I'm not sure that I've ever even had an aspersion. I might be an aspersion virgin and not know what the hell I've been missing all this time. :(

Tressel has flirted with the option on and off through the years. Coaches have a finite amount of time. I think Tress will learn more breaking down Navy film than he would at a cursory glance. I think somewhere, on some level of importance, the chance to study a decent option team is appealing to the OSU coaching staff. Did you notice NFL teams running single wing (wildcat etc) plays more in the playoffs when they played teams with a strong single wing package (miami)? I did. My bet is that the coaches spent enough time defensing the play that they could incorporate it into the offense with only marignally more effort.

Offensively, the Buckeyes have shown some new wrinkles this spring, but the one play that looks like it might stick is the shovel pass. Maybe it is something the staff saw on film specifically for Navy, or maybe even USC, but it seems to be something work on a few times per practice. It doesn?t get much attention in the football ranks, but the shovel play is actually a great low risk, high reward play. It acts somewhat like a draw play, but it helps keep the quarterback standing upright and it all but eliminates the potential for a fumble. If the receiver fails to handle the pass, it falls harmless to the Turf as an incompletion.

Impressions from the open practice (Blogging the Buckeyes)

I would like to thank the acadamy for inviting me here tonight. I am still holding out hope for Xeno's Paradox on the goal line:biggrin:

Here's a link to the Naval Academy's roster. Looks like 8 players on the team are from Ohio, including 2 from Westerville. I'm sure it will be quite exciting for the young men from Navy, but after the things they go through at the academy, I certainly won't expect them to be awestruck. They'll be prepared to put up a good fight.
