Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

Before I get into critiquing what I saw in the game, I am perplexed as to why Rolle is playing MLB while Spitler is at SLB. There may possibly be an explanation here, I'll just have to do some searching. But that does lead into my first point...

  • If Rolle was on the outside, I think we would have slowed down the option/sweeps today. Spitler just doesn't look faster enough to play.
  • It's not as bad as the nation or Mark May wants to make it out to be. I think Lou Holtz is getting a little cooky, but I do agree with him. Navy isn't a bad football team and facing an option offense is nothing like facing a normal offense. I found May's comment about how the defense will have no film to look over for USC, but overlooks the fact that USC will have nothing to use of OSU's defense.
  • I didn't the defensive call on the 85 yard TD. Cover 0 with no one blitzing and Russell covering the WR? Russell can't cover man-to-man. I know you're expecting the option, but put a corner out there and/or blitz someone.
  • I love the way our ball carriers are running with the ball. They're moving their feet and constantly driving forward. Even TP is fighting for extra yards rather than stepping out of bounds a yard short of the 1st down marker.
  • The O-Line does need to get better, but it's Week 1, don't write them off yet. NFL = 4 Pre-Season games / NCAA = 0 Pre-Season games
  • A couple of mistakes through the passing game, but overall TP looked pretty good and I like him thinking throw first and not just tucking it. Sanz is looking clutch as usual, Carter is looking like pops, and Posey made some nice plays.
  • Jake Ballard gets his own line. I remember him making an acrobatic catch 2 years ago. I think against Wisconsin? Where he tip-toed juggling a catch, somehow remained upright long enough to fall in the endzone. He's a much better receiver (and very athletic) than the nation thinks. He has the size and receiving skills to be very successful in the pros.
  • Overall I think we're fine for USC next week. The line needs some work and the defense isn't going to play like they did today. They won't be running Cover 0 or having Russell line up man-to-man. We need to put pressure on the true frosh and make him beat us by making good reads under the blitz.

Dont think I can agree with you more, Tress will have the boys ready for USC, They will be watching this game over and over this week, and I have a good feeling there gonna look at last years game to get some ideas of what there bringing. Also with TP being in that game last year, He knows the weaknesses of USC. Im just glad to see the buckeyes back on the field.

7. Exciting and upsetting 4th Q. Longest safety I ever saw and for a team that is known for running, how does Navy get an 80 yard TD pass?

- Jermale Hines is 1 of the 2 best Safeties the team has right now. Coleman and Hines should be the starters right now. Over the last 2 games Russell has been burnt 3 times for TD's.

I agree and disagree with lots in the posts ive seen. I have watched the game twice now and have a few insights that weren't mentioned.

1. From the quotes above... Yes Russell had a rough game... and i understand it is his full responsibility to cover if it is his job to(which it was for the most part)... But if you watch the majority of the plays, Coleman was trying to be patient but would scoot up 2-3 yards prior to each snap and by the time the ball was fully hiked was heading towards the line on the majority of plays, causing Russell to play straight up single coverage. The D Cor from Navy had to have seen this and that is where the 80 yard pass came in. Anderson expected a safety cover and Coleman stepped forward and the WR/QB knew it would happen and they got caught. The flag route was the one that upset me more because if Russell gets on his outside shoulder more the WR had no way to make a play cause Coleman would have been right there for a slant/post.

2. Pryor is more decisive and throws with more conviction. He has gotten alot better with understanding where a defense will be. Only a couple of times I was frustrated with him and one was throwing to a "dead WR" near the goaline twice with little chance to score. But it was a minor mistake. And I think the pick came from trying too hard to make a play and overthrew it a bit(Dane still almost caught it though like Ballard did on his overthrow).

3. Barring some kind of change thru practice, Duron will be the 3rd WR. I hope TWash steps up but he seems jittery.

4. Navy's offense shows all of your flaws due to it being such a disciplined offense to run. You have to stick to your keys and if you try to make a play out of your read it can cost you. The D-line attacked well but overpursued on both td runs and on a couple of other plays for first downs. And the mlb's behind them went directly for the qb sweep and Navy's QB read that. Won't be as much of an issue with a non option team. The D just tried so hard to make plays... much better than paying too careful and getting beat up... you can focus hard play but it is hard to get guys passed being too careful. It is also hard to build consistancy with a team that holds onto the ball for as long as they did, especially in the 3rd quarter. Navy has also made it to 6 straight bowl games, went 9-4 and a point against BC from 10-3, beat WF and Rutgers last year and ND the year before(I know that doesnt mean alot but still not nervous of a big crowd). They build discipline into everything in the military which makes Navy better than half of the Big Ten.

5. Only having one false start and one delay of game is an upgrade from previous years.

6.The fourth down... Pryor asked for it...Tressel obliged due to him wanting to fully entrench TP as the leader... just as said the play action roll out was the play needed...just like the td earlier in the game.(was the second fourth down that Tressel went for and the dive worked the first time)

7. Special teams...strong as expected.

8. Pressure caused growth for the youngsters and not as expirienced. Not a bad thing with 9/12 most likely going to have a tight feel.

9. Everything that was an issue is definitely "fixable" this week leading up to USC. Plus After winning I hope that we worked on USC a bit this past week, because it wont hurt. I think Pryor has been waiting for and all of his work was based on the USC game and the PSU game and having it as defining moments this year, so expect big things from him.

If I missed something oh well. Practice should be very agressive this week and I expect great things to come from that. I hope people give the youngsters more to prove with the Bullentin board crap.

Let's Go Bucks!!!!!
It's USC week!!!!!

I will lay off the defense because they faced a gimmicky offense that is flat tough to prepare for. Overrall it wasnt an impressive show, but I am definitely not worried.
However the offensive line to me was beyond disappointing. How can you not get a push against Navy? The 4th down debacle was flat embarrassing.
Seriously, if you cant boss Navy around then they dont have much hope to move USC off the ball.
I sure hope TP rests his legs this week, because he is going to need them next Saturday night...

When is enough enough? dissapointed fans in the stands!

You can pick out a handful of things that made a huge difference:
*Anderson Russell being terrible in coverage.
*Overthrows by Terrelle to wide open receivers.
*Not going for the FG when we were up 29-14.
*T Wash dropping a sure first down that probably would have led to a score.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm just tired of losing or almost losing people expect alot from ohio state! :osu::oh::io:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Russel got beat alot last year/ the Texas game for example.............
Coleman is nothing to write home about although he saved us twice today.
Spitler looked rather slow heading for the ball carrier.
OL doesn't look so hot so far but we will see..... :wink2:
Navy put pressure on Pryor... that's pathetic as we're much bigger.
We missed a field goal and couldn't convert on 4th and 1 ......
Navy ran the ball right down our throats many times.
Too many flags called on us/ a face mask on saine that wasn't called didn't help us obviously either.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Granted it was the first game but i saw some poor tackleing on the field.
Brian rolle showed some good speed and luckily got us the two points.
Looks like we're going to be relying on pryors legs to take us to a BCS game how sad when were suppossed to have other capable players. I say bench Anderson russel and look for someone else maybe even a young guy.
I dont think Bauserman should of played at all not against this opening team anyways. All i know is where i was sitting in the shoe today people were not pleased or optimistic by what they saw and next saturdays game.... ouch here is my conclusion on that=Please be prepared to be embarrassed next week.:( I love the buckeyes but i'm also realistic and there's nothing wrong with that. Fact is we have lost to florida, lsu, texas, penn state, usc, and i hope we dont head down that road again the big ten already is frowned upon. I heard several people beside me at todays game mention maybe it's time for tressel to leave. At some point change has to happen either with new coordinators for defense and offense or both something has to happen here. I dont believe i'm going "overboard" this is really a critical moment for tressel and the buckeyes i believe as a program. Todays showing left alot to desire we looked tired like we wanted to take a cat nap i just dont understand that. I'll try to end on a positive note lol i think the game next saturday will be ALOT better. If we dont win it though and lose to penn state people will start talking about replacing staff. And navy is a good football team for what they do they put up a good fight!
