"N word" could get you fined...

The proposed law faces a short life before being struck down in the courts. At least they aren't trying to desecrate the Constitution with this like the people who want to ban flag burning.

Some people are just to stupid to realize that you can't control thoughts and speech and people. Wasn't it just last week some dumbass wanted to ban spanking your kid?

Never mind where this is leading. It's already there.

Cheryl M. Mewborn, 42, has been suspended from her teaching duties at Bryant Elementary School in Cobb County, Georgia. Miss Mewborn, who is white, gave her mostly black students a little lecture about how they shouldn't call each other 'n_gger' and in so doing pronounced the forbidden syllables herself. Black parents raised an outcry, and Miss Mewborn will be out of the classroom until school authorities complete an investigation."

Wow. I'm embarrassed just to read that.

Wow, double standard...what a shock. :roll1: I bet those black parents are the same ones that think that whites can't teach African-American history.

I have no absolutely sympathy for her. Any teacher who thinks they wouldn't get blasted or worse for using that word in the classroom (regardless of the context) without first consulting the administration is dumb as hell. If she's that stupid, I doubt she was much of an educator.
No worse than some educators here on this board that think it's OK to call gay guys "Homos"...

Agree, too touchy of a subject to address in schools these days.
So, addressing the public usage of a word--regardless of its vileness--is too touchy of a subject to be addressed in school, but we can teach sex education and distribute free condoms to middle schoolers. Right...

Exactly. And the first thing you learn in Management 101 is that in order to generate expectations in people, you must give them specific instructions. That is why you don't merely tell hotel maids to "go clean room 1042." You hand them a check list that enumerates each task to be completed. The teacher had to give clear instruction to each student, including those not party to the inappropriate conversation.

Interesting how it's ok for Hollywood to use phrases like "bull ****** faggot" (this forum even generated the asterisks automatically to block out the n word!!!) for mere entertainment though. But let a teacher proscribe the word, and out come the whiners.

It's not too touchy (in my opinion), but anyone who is functionally retarded or smarter would have enough common sense to have this kind of lesson/presentation approved by the school adminstrators first. It's called getting your lesson plan approved or simply making sure your ass is covered just in case this wasn't such a good idea. Everyone who isn't a mouth breathing dumbass and works for someone else (myslef included) has been forced to do this at some time. That's why your comparison of this idiotic teacher's lesson on the "N word" to things like sex ed and free condom distribution (which would be approved by a school adminstror and/or board) is so lousy. One item wasn't okayed and the other is.

The principal of that school at the time was a black man. Are you suggesting this teacher thought she was actually getting way with something?

No. I'm suggesting she's a complete dumbass and lousy excuse for a teacher for not using common basic sense. Someone that stupid shouldn't be teaching children.

I will grant you it may have been inappropriate for her to use the term. But not necessarily so, and not beyond the realm of reason. That said, the use of the term by the students and the apparently bad parenting is far worse.

It's amazing that when bad behavior MUST be addressed, and in this the teacher had no choice, we remove to assessing the response and fail to focus on the bad behavior that demanded a response in the first place.

The two parents and a community activist responded by demanding that this woman NEVER teach again. Clearly their position was an over reaction to the supposed "crime."

And let's face it...if she had been black herself, this would never have made the media. She is a WHITE person who uttered the term, and that is the sole objection here. That is what makes the parents' position RACIST.

I've never said it wasn't inappropriate. It may have been just fine in the manner in which she presented it. That doesn't remove the fact that she chose to pursue a subject that had the potetial to explode without first getting approval from a superior. That's beyond stupid.

Just b/c someone (like myself) blasts this teacher for her stupidity, doesn't mean they condone the use behavior of dumbasses who use the N word casually regardless of their race. Both parties deserve to be exposed for the morons they are.

Eh, I disagree completely. This teacher clearly showed she has little intelligence nor common sense with the way she handled her lesson. As I've said before, if she's dumb enough to not get approval for her "lesson" or "discussion" on such a volatile topic, she's a mouthbreather.

And let's face it...if she had been black herself, this would never have made the media. She is a WHITE person who uttered the term, and that is the sole objection here. That is what makes the parents' position RACIST.

:roll1: I never get tired of the "If they weren't white..." argument. What next, more ridiculous (and baseless) complaints about white comedians not being allowed to make fun of other races?

Well if I'm going to have a discussion on the word, I'm sure as hell going to get my boss's approval to actually say the word if I deem it appropriate.

Like Stoo said, you know to run something like that by your boss, it's "Ass-covering 101."

I'd be foolish to just start using that word in my class before running it by an administrator.

Sex ed. is adopted by every state's board of education so we have to teach it.

If they wanted to adopt the usage of the "N word" I'm sure we would then teach it too.
