I Heart Boobs
Ok in a spinoff from the Firefox thread. I went ahead and installed Thunderbird to check it out. Anybody using it? Seems pretty cool so far, junk mail feature is nice. I would love to find a damn email client that has a pop feature that runs in your system tray, so it notifies you of having mail, even if you dont have the email client open. The only one I know of that does this is Incredimail, which is a big steaming pile of shit.

:)

It actually looks like a saturday morning cartoon, lemme tell ya. Gay pretty wallpapers and stuff. (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

I actually answered my own question. Was a bit of a pain in the ass, but I managed to find a tray extension for it that would minimize it to the system tray, and found a VB script that let me link it with the microsoft agent, so now when I receive mail, merlin pops up and tells me so. Pretty sweet.

Well there are enough anti-Microsoft people out there to make it pretty popular. I honestly cannot be anti-Microsoft, because whether you like it or not, they brought us the Internet and made the computer what it is today. (Unless you ask a mac fan of course, I get tired of arguing with them). Now I can say that I dont like what they represent, and how they rape people financially.

Anyway, I am digging this Thunderbird so far, never did care for Outlook or Outlook Express very much. And Eudora just lacks functionality.

Agreed. I enjoy mac's in some sense, but am not a mac guy at all.

MS represents everything that is wrong about big business... so while they have brought us much I think other companies could have done so without some of the reasons we hate them...

Either way, the fascinating thing is that these two programs are in their first or second generations of the program... IE & Outlook still don't have it all together after 6 versions IMO.

What is so wrong with MS business practices?
My guess is you are relatively young and do not remember all the BS we used to have to go through to get computers and software to work.:wink2:

I am a long time Firefox user going back to when it was Phoenix v0.4.

Thunderbird just does not do it for me.

I am able use Outlook with business contact manager, One Note and my printer interface to conduct 90% of my business. It was a steep learning curve but now it is a no brainer. I used to use Franklin Coveys Plan Plus but it had some integration issues. Guess it comes down to what you need and how comfortable you are trying different things.

I am all for open source but what I see is a lot of young people that are not conducting business touting open source to spite MS. As we have seen with Firefox once the platform gets critical mass some stooge will write something that will have the potential for significant harm. Anything a human develops some other human can break. They will not do so until they feel they will get the impact they desire. Firefox and Thunderbird are getting there.

I also like to joke that if Apple had not developed the iPod they would be a penny stock now. Heard the other day that they have 100 day inventory of iPods. That does not bode well for Apple.

The rapid change in technology is good for the consumer as we get new toys with better performance. Most businesses would rather stick with the low cost, tried and true. A good thing open source will do is keep MS price structure in line.

Couldnt agree more. That is what I meant when I said "I cant really look at MS as "the enemy". I appreciate what they do. I will give you a prime example of one thing that I do not appreciate. I own 5 computers, they want me to purchase a copy of windows XP pro for each computer at $150 a pop (and that's for OEM). They can go fuck themselves :)

However I will not just give up windows and use linux just to spite MS. Negative. Linux absolutely does NOT do what I need it to do. And if it does, it usually takes one hell of a fight.

They, MS, have empower or whatever it is called.
It is software for use for development and testing.
You get 5 to 10 license of most of the products for $300.

We have a linux geek. You are correct it does what he wants but it takes twice as long. I do not have the time.

If this weren't the open discussion thread, it would need splitting...

What is a prime example of what is wrong with them?
One word: Netscape.

Their business approach is clearly effective... but the ethics of many of their decisions seem quite questionable IMO.

The most hilarious fault of the Outlook series was how horribly it supported their own email client Hotmail for so long. I never understood that. Outlook Express handled it, but you had to jump thru a few hoops to get it to work in Outlook IIRC.

No doubt Linux is harder to use than Windows... I missed the part where us Firefox groupies were suggesting everyone should use Linux.

I was talking about an internet browser, which gets used largely at home for non business purposes, and provides a much more intuitive and enjoyable web experience for the home user. Now Thunderbird has been created in addition and has a lot of promising features.

Actually I chime in for a bit of non-revisionist history here... Those who claim that Wintel (M$oft) or Apple/Mac was the catalyst for the Internet are in my opinion (and crystal clear recollection) -- dead wrong.

The Internet -- as we know and understand it today -- I.e. Web, Mail, HTML markup, Java, News, Embedded Media was almost entirely birthed on Unix or Solaris boxes.

Macs and Microsoft were both johnny come latelies to the party.

Ports of the key applications to these platforms spread the word, but it was really pretty much all in place on Unices and X-Windows, well ahead of either Apple or Wintel.

Sorry guess I didnt word that correctly. What I meant was, it is MS who has been able to introduce the Internet to so many people.........because of ease of use. I do tech support for a living, and believe me, some people arent smart enough to tie their shoes, but can still use the Internet. Without MS, that definitely wouldnt be so.

BFS - Nobody said firefox groupies were anti-MS. I simply said there are alot of people who are anti-MS, and some of them are just ridiculous about it.

Yep, I think MS initially missed the ball on the net.
But on the other hand the net would not be the ubiguitous play ground we all enjoy if we had to type all that crazy commands needed by the tech wonks.

BFS

I am not directing any type of attack. I am just curious about your statement of questionable business practices.

I use Firefox, have for along time. It is fair to discuss its' pros and cons just like IE, Outlook and Thunderbird.

I'm rather anti-MS. However, it won't keep me from using their good products, like XP (which is not the best example), Xbox, or some of their programming development tools.

So I'm kind of a balance of the two.

Sorry if I got a little touchy, tho it wouldn't be the first time :)

I guess I find it questionable to run other businesses into the ground rather than outdoing them yourselves...

I'm 48 and remember all that shit. Remember back in the early '80s when CP/M was battling MS-DOS to become the standard operating system? How about Intel's 8080 microprocessor going against Motorola's 6800 microprocessor? Or when 64K of memory was supposed to be the limit? And when you had to load a program via cassette tape?

That being said, Microsoft has done a lot for, and a lot to, the computing world. While they've developed a myriad of products (many of them pretty good), their business practices border on criminal (forcing computer manufacturers to install only their OS, not allowing retailers to discount their software, etc.). Microsoft did not turn into the mega-entity it is today because they made superior products...far from it.

Stooges will write viruses and hacks for any software that is worth their time. The problem with Microsoft is that when they patch one problem, they open another one up...not to mention that most of their shit has tons of vulnerabilities from the very get-go. I probably have 30 patches on my XP system and IE browser at work. And we have an SMS server that is constantly pushing out new patches to clients on our network...two days ago I had my computer re-booted three fucking times in the space of two hours. All because they keep finding more and more vulnerabilities. Hackers hack MS shit not only because it is the most prevalent product out there, because also because they can.
