Lockup

Off Season BLAH
I have been offered a job in the Dayton area and look to be accepting it. So I was wondering if any of you guys or gals live around that area and can suggest some nice areas to move into.

Looking for decent houseing prices, good schools and a nice community to live in. Would like to stay within a half an hour or so of Dayton if possible.

Live in Cincinnati. :)

South side of Dayton seems nice. Centerville (newer) and Oakwood? is older homes.

I can't live in cinci. Been there a couple of times and was not impressed. Bad enough living as close to Cleveland as I do now. I have heard centerville is nice. thanks

Dude, not to rip on your new hometown, but have you ever been to Downtown Dayton???? It is basicly Mead, some govt buildings and a huge bus stop.

There are some cool sections, but Downtown Dayton is a freeken dump.

Oh I have no plans to live in dayton and don't expect much from it. I have been in the military and know areas around bases are not real great. Besides this gets me much closer to the shoe :)

Just moved to Columbus from Dayton a few months ago, but still work in Vandalia, and have family in the area.

Like was said before, Oakwood and Centerville are two good places to live that are south of Dayton. Springboro is very nice, but their property tax/school situation is really a big problem right now.

Tipp City and Englewood are nice places north of Dayton, and closer to I-70 (and The 'Shoe) than the places in the south. Both have good schools too.

Kettering still has excellent schools and almost all of it lies within three or four miles of downtown Dayton. Wide range of housing prices. Great access to interstates in all four directions. Much more affordable than Centerville and Oakwood.

Check out Kramer's for a dive, great fries and burgers and the locals all buy their beer in quarts and tall boys, 5th/3rd Park for a baseball game, and there's a great Irish pub w/beer garden somewhere near Jefferson and Third. Sits right on the corner so you can't miss it. Very good food and a wide choice of domestic and imported beers. The Dayton Daily News sports section is all about Ohio State football from August on (Unlike nearby Cincinnati) and you have to find the bar that has the Browns on dish, otherwise you're stuck with NFL Lite, aka the Bengals. (Dayton was very big on the Browns long after the Bengals came around.)

Whatever you do, soon after the dust settles get your ass over to the Air Force Museum. It's a world class museum. Call and get an appointment for a tour of the restoration facility, I think they list it as the Memphis Belle Tour. Meet a geezer as old as me and hear great stories as well as the behind the scenes look. Deed's Carillon Park is also a worthwhile destination.

I grew up in Dayton and as I like to say, it's a great place to be from. Interpret that anyway you want to.

I live in Springboro and agree with Iron's assessment. I grew up in centerville and it is a great school district. Springboro has a good district as well, however, a levy just failed on Super Tuesday. There are a lot of homes for sale in springboro right now so you can get a great deal...you can get a home identical to one in centerville for 15,000-$20,000 less.

Property tax in Springboro is still on par with Centerville and I feel that the school district will get their shit together and manage funds properly now that the levy failed.

Not to get too far off track from the purpose of this thread but...the DDN had a story (DDN Story) a week or two ago about Springboro and it's proposed six levies over the next seven years...and they're not small levies either. A few of the engineers that I work with are super fuckin' pissed. Many of them have kids that either go to Springboro or are very close to being old enough to go to school, and they don't care for what the administration is trying to pull.

Unless there is a re-organization at the top, I would stay away from Springboro for now.

Part of the problem with Springboro is they're one of the fastest growing cities in Ohio. About 10 years ago they were #2 on the fastest growing cities, and they've continued to grow since then. On one hand, this has been GREAT for property values, but its made it a nightmare for schools to provide room for students. In the mid 90s they built a new high school, and by '98 they were already building a newer, bigger one :shake:

Its my personal belief that Springboro will right the ship eventually. I think that growth is really started to slow at this point, theres not a lot of room for anymore huge subdivisions. It is a very nice town, although they come off as a little pompous/arrogant because of the money in the town (Centerville is similar).

I would still recommend Springboro. Despite the levi problems, they are known for good schools. The problem has always been the administration. Even when they knew how fast the city was growing, nobody was really taking that into account when they were planning the new high school(s) the last 15 years. Centerville and Oakwood are also nice, as mentioned. Kettering isn't too bad. I would stay away from downtown of course and West Carrolton. Miamisburg isn't special. Theres a few very good private schools in the area, Alter is one.
