Just moved to Columbus from Dayton a few months ago, but still work in Vandalia, and have family in the area.

Like was said before, Oakwood and Centerville are two good places to live that are south of Dayton. Springboro is very nice, but their property tax/school situation is really a big problem right now.

Tipp City and Englewood are nice places north of Dayton, and closer to I-70 (and The 'Shoe) than the places in the south. Both have good schools too.

stay away from englewood, trotwood is slowly taking over that town (my parents live there and my sister goes to northmont). tipp city and troy are nice and are more affordable than centerville/oakwood. however, all of the modern fun places to hang out are south of town so it really comes down to your lifestyle. that's my 2 cents

Dude, not to rip on your new hometown, but have you ever been to Downtown Dayton???? It is basicly Mead, some govt buildings and a huge bus stop.

There are some cool sections, but Downtown Dayton is a freeken dump.

In the Gem city's defense things are a lot better down town than they used to be. Since the Dragons arrived & they put in the riverwalk there has been a good bit of development along the SE side of the river.

It's still no San Antonio but it's not quite the shit hole it used to be.

Regarding all the recomendations for Oakwood. Yes it is a nice area with a good school system. It is also somewhat overpriced compared to other "upscale" parts of town and if you are a person of color, you probably don't want to live there.

Pretty much the rest of the recomendations are spot on. The northern part of town was once the booming area but has started to stagnate over the past decade or so while the growth areas have moved to the south.

Coloreds have been allowed in Oakwood since the 70s

That alone speaks volumes to me.

IME the Oakwood police are less than even handed when it comes to non-white individuals.

Again, that is just my experience and is completely anecdotal but I have heard similar stories from others.

Word

Good to hear about Daytons downtown. I used to work out at the Y near the river, good facility. But near the mead building at 3, when the kids got off the busses was downright scary.

Whats that bar district near downtown. Oregon Street? That seemed kinda cool.

Yeah. The Oregon District is ok. Thai 9 has very good sushi. Most of the bars are old "divey" places without the seedy clientele of a dive, and parkings usually pretty easy too.

Well I am not a person of color but my wife is half so that might be something to keep in mind. It does seem a bit overpriced though.

What is the story with Clayton. The schools seem pretty good and the housing looks pretty reasonable.
Good parts and bad parts. I looked around Clayton a little, early on in my house hunt, four to five years ago. Decent schools, reasonable prices, but the perceived problem of Trotwood seeping in like it is in Englewood is there...I don't know if there's any truth to it though.

I'll be moving to Dayton for a job near Wright-Patt in December. I appreciate all of the suggestions regarding real estate.

Do any of you who currently live in the area have any recommendations about utilities? How about Time Warner vs. DirecTV? Any thoughts on cellular providers (local coverage, service, etc...)? Any word on Barksdale?

Bellbrook and Beavercreek are nice areas. Not sure about Bellbrook, but Beavercreek has pretty high property taxes though.

Is this still the case? How high are we talking here? I'm looking to live pretty cheap for the first year or so... Hopefully it won't have a big impact.

Television - I had Time Warner when I lived there and was happy with it other than price, but I also never lived in an arrangement where I was able to get a dish. As of four years ago, there were no options like FIOS or UVerse and I doubt they have them now still.

Cellular - That part of Ohio is flat, so pretty much every national carrier works in that area, and all of them have the same amount of dead spots there. Cincinnati Bell is also available and might be your best option for a cheap regional carrier. It's basically a rebranded, non-contract version of AT&T.

As far as neighborhoods go, if you're looking to start off inexpensive you might want to look into Kettering. You're probably gonna find more inexpensive options there than Beavercreek or Englewood, but it's not a bad part of town and it's in the same general area. IMO, the key is to live near I-675 to be near whatever Dayton "has to offer" () and make it easier to get the fuck out of town whenever possible, with fairly easy access to Cincinnati and Columbus.

I would not look at Springfield. I grew up not far from Springfield - it's cheap and with good reason. It's like Detroit for Kentuckians.

Also, I used to live and Huber Heights and would not recommend it. It's inexpensive and right off of I-70 & I-75 so that was nice, but it seems like every time I go back through it has gotten worse and worse

I live in Springboro which is a lot cheaper than Centerville or Oakwood. It has a good school system and reasonable property taxes. Easy access to 75 and 675. About a 20 minute commute to WPAFB. I was born in Kettering, grew up in Centerville, and moved to Springboro about 7 years ago. Seems like every once in awhile I move 10 miles south....next stop Middletown!
