Coach, talk about your team's performance today against the defending champs
I couldn't be more proud of these kids. This game was a real gut check... there were a lot of chances to get down on ourselves. Getting stopped for FGs in the redzone, watching Demps score a heartbreaking TD before halftime, how every rally by our squad was answered by theirs, this game tested our resolve.

All year long, the defense has carried us against the heavy weights. With the speed and talent of Florida, they couldn't fulfill that role for most of today, until some huge plays in the 4th. Instead, our offense stepped up to the challenge and found a way to light up the scoreboard.
Talk about that interception with 3 min to go by your freshman DL
We always coach our linemen to keep their hands up when we drop them into coverage, because you never know when a QB might challenge your stone hands. Tebow has a lot of confidence in his arm, and tried to thread the needle. Lynden made one hell of a play, scaling the ladder for that INT, and holding on through the bone-jarring drive into the turf. He's done for the year after that injury, but boy did he go out in a big way.
coach, with winning the SEC, do you feel you've done enough to play in the NC game?
Boy I hope so. My boys have done everything we've asked of them, and our competitors for that 2nd spot have all lost a game.

Texas already lost to Allenville, and Boise State played a joke of a schedule and lost to 6-6 Oregon in their home opener. I think our resume is a lot better than those two.

But if the brutal SEC schedule costs us a title bid, I guess we'll have to be perfect next year.

Every year, freshmen have a big impact on programs around the country, and this year will be no exception. Whether it's filling that one hole to shore up a title run or rebuilding & reviving a program around a star player, recruiting is the lifeblood of college football. Here are some of the recruits we expect to make an instant impact this fall.

Mean Machine TE Al Fountain - Coach Scarborough is very excited about this youngster's soft hands, 4.5 flat speed, and physical blocking style. Without many deep threats at wideout, Fountain will not only stretch the defense but provide an excellent security blanket for new qb Captain Knauer.

Bayside WR Bobby Kemp - At 6'2" 196 with 4.31 speed, Bobby Kemp got calls from every school in the country. Screech Powers remains the go-to WR in this offense, but Kemp should make a splash in 3 & 4 receiver sets. He can beat you deep with speed, go over you with his size and body control, or through you with his strength. The only knock on Bobby is that he's a bit stiff, but I still see him having a big year.

Hoover TE Jamie Lee - Coach Propst helped distance himself from a brutal 2009 campaign by hauling in the nation's best tight end. At 6'4" 264 lbs he's bigger than anyone asked to cover him, and his 4.48 speed is enough to outrun many linebackers. Look for QB Andre Battle to look his way early and often.

Hoover MLB Aaron Rogers - Propst beat out a who's who of cfb powerhouses to sign the nation's best MLB, and he's set to anchor the middle of that defense. Rogers does not possess great speed but possesses great instincts and a nose for the football.

Gridiron Gang DT Greg Williams - Despite a senior laden depth chart, Williams is projected to start from day 1. He brings a freakish blend of speed and power, clocking a 4.64 during fall camp.

Gridiron Gang OLB Anthony Walker - Speed was a major emphasis in this recruiting class, and Kilpatrick ventured to Hawaii for this speed demon. Walker had scouts drooling with his 4.39 40 time, but also because he did not sacrifice tackling, fundamentals or physicality for speed. Veteran LB Sam Berg was no slouch but he has lost his spot to this promising youngster.

Miami Sharks RT Derrick Hill
- Derrick emerged onto the recruiting scene late, and had to switch phones 3 times from all of the interest. Despite a veteran and talented line, Coach D'Amato told me recently that Hill is the favorite to start at right tackle.

Miami Sharks FS Josh Jones - Usually when a young returning starter earns all-american accolades, his offseason is more about S&C training and staying healthy than competing. Not the case in Miami. No other school offered Jones, the #16 ranked SS (with 4.29 speed). Upon enrollment, Jones left the coaches no choice but to start him alongside standout SS Stephen Giles.

SCLSU DE Jake Sellers - Jake will split time with a veteran group of pass rushers, but Coach Klein found a real gem in florida with this one. Don't let his long, thin 6'5" frame fool you, he reportedly benched 480 & squatted 690. With that kind of strength, it will give the coaches a lot of flexibility with how they deploy his talent.

Springfield MLB Justin Roberson - Coach Simpson was trying to get to Florida, but his dementia paid dividends in this case as he stopped to ask for directions in Jennings, LA and noticed this undersized playmaker. Justin isn't the biggest or fastest backer, yet this 3-star prospect hauled in offers from OSU, LSU, & SCLSU among others. This newcomer is crucial not only for what he can do, but what the player he replaced cannot: Ralph Wiggum.

TC Williams TE Dwayne Bell - It's tough to not make an impact when there are no players returning at your position, but Dwayne Bell fills that void nicely, particularly given his meager #34 ranking by recruitniks. He and fellow sleeper pickup - #36 TE Leonard - will anchor the ends of the offense for better or worse.

Team Zissou QB Mike Scott - Mike is not a big upgrade over Plimpton in the speed department, but after a year's worth of a collapsing pocket, Scott & his 4.48 40 may be just what the doctor ordered. His lack of accuracy may keep him from running away with the starting job, however. Many thought that Zissou's recruiting coup in landing 5-star HB Scott would appear here, but Zissou is absolutely stacked with speed backs. His 4.29 speed still puts him well behind the other 4-5 backs on roster.

West Canaan MLB Elgin Lott
- Despite not receiving a written scholarship offer, this #3 ranked 5-star MLB prospect signed with the Coyotes and will start from day one.

West Canaan DEs Oliver & Lee - Like Lott, these 3* sleeper prospects walked on this summer (Lee did so despite offers from Permian & the Sharks) and were so impressive that Bud Kilmer rewarded them with scholarships and made them his starting duo upfront.

ESPN INSIDE ACCESS:

Following a shootout win 59-34, Coach Rush Propst sat with the media to answer some question on this, the first game of the 2010 season.

Reporter: Coach, where did the offensive output come from? Last year was a very ball control and defensive minded team, where did the change come from?

Propst: Well, Ike, many people thought that this year would be an ever deeper plunge for the offense, due to us losing Jackson and Zorn on the outside. Truth be told I haven't even looked at the stats from this game yet...let's see here...WOW...Clear ended up with 7 catches for 140 yards and 3 touchdowns!? Well I'll be damned...we also got some good work in the flats out of the backfield from the runningbacks and hit our tightends 4 times including a touchdown. What is really making the difference here is Andre (Battle). Kid can flat out play. Not taking away anything from John Parker, but he needs a bit more time in the pocket which our O-Line can't quite manage yet, so he'll take a redshirt year.

Reporter: In the biggest opening day performance in school history, Battle went 22 of 30 for 362 yards and 4 touchdowns. Do you care to comment on that performance?

Propst:
Well let's also remember that he had two picks. We need to clear that up before we get to the meat of our schedule. I think he did great, hitting 8 different receivers. His rushing numbers are skewed because of the crazy amount of sacks we gave up. HOLY CRA...erhm, excuse me. I just noticed he rushed for three touchdowns as well.

Reporter: How did it feel taking the opening kickoff of the 2010 season back for a touchdown?

Propst: Boy I tell ya, what a rush! It's been a tough offseason for the team. But we are senior laden. And to start of the game on such a successful note allowed us to drop our anxiety and just play football, which aided us in the end. Let's remember that we had a 38-14 lead going into the fourth. Our second string defense allowed some late touchdowns, but all in all this game gave us alot of things to learn from and get better from. I'm excited for the season.

Reporter: Thanks, Coach.

Propst nods and walks off the stage..."Boy", he wondered, "Is this how the media is after an opening season win?"

"Hope we keep these fellers' satiated."

It's good to be back. No one likes a contract holdout, especially not from college washouts like Corso & myself. But in the words of Kramer, that's all water near a bridge.

College football is always full of surprises, and this year was no different. We've seen a half dozen coaches be replaced in-season - TC Williams has already fired their replacement - but none are more intriguing than the Permian hire. On paper, that team has as much talent as anyone in our dirty dozen, yet they've squandered in mediocrity. Let's see if the Foth family can return them to power, or whether his older brother got all of the coaching genes.

The turnaround in Hoover Alabama has been nothing short of remarkable. They didn't just miss bowl season last year, they missed it because Houston dropped 60 on them :slappy:

Now look at Coach Propst's program, undefeated and squarely in the hunt for a SEC & National Title. In only his second year, he has already made the Miami rivalry the game of the year.

Unfortunately for Hoover, they have not been able to translate that success into recruiting battles so far. The #1 overall prospect, a

QB from Alabama, was thought to be in the bag for Hoover. Garcia was thought to just be taking some pleasure trips, but he could not resist the canned traditions and ugly women up north. Kevin Newsome better not get comfy, because Penn State now has someone who can actually throw the ball.

Joining us now on the Subway Fresh Take hotline, fresh off a tough victory over Rocky Top, is Miami head coach Tony D'Amato.

Coach, the talk heading into this clash was the health of Steamin' Beamen and whether your young backup quarterback could handle the fierce Vols defense. Take us through your decision to rest Willie, your thoughts after the early interception, and whether we can expect to see Beamen in the grudge match against the muddogs next weekend.
