Most Talented College RB This Decade

Given that there's a major difference between "most talented running back" and "most successful college career as a running back", I'd give Clarett serious consideration for the #1 spot in the former category. I have no problem with putting Peterson there, he was incredible. But for my money, he and Clarett were comparably jaw-dropping performers as true freshmen. I think I'd put Clarett at least at #2, and clearly ahead of many of the RB's who have been mentioned here.

I think Bush is a bit overrated as a running back. A great running back no doubt, and an even better kick and punt returner, but not top 5 in the past decade, IMO. I'd go with:

1. Peterson
2. McFadden
3. McGahee
4. Benson
5. Beanie

Honstly I always thought that Bush was overrated as a return man. Yes, he was great but I always thought Ginn and Hester were lightyears better at returns. I think Bush is the best big play back in CFB history. Is he a RB like Peterson and McGahee? No, but he had decent size (6'0) and ran a 4.3 forty. He was a different type of back, but not too many players can say they would have been a All American at WR and RB.

This is a good question.

I'd go with McFadden just barely ahead of AP because of the intangibles. AP is the better runner, but Darren is a fantastic receiver and can toss it well, he's just all around to me and for a RB I love to have that versatility.

Benson, Larry Johnson and even Chris Perry deserve some talk. Perry's amazing 2003 year is almost forgotten, but he was 4th in the Heisman and won the Doak Walker that year.

I agree about the Perry statement. He isnt Top 5 or anything, but Top 20. I talk to Michigan fans about him and Mike Hart, and some don't even know who Perry is. I just face palm because he was really fun to watch in 03. I think he was a much better player than Hart, but a lot of people forgot about him.

That was a great heisman year overall

Chris Perry Sr season (2003): 1,674 yds 18 td's

as a point of comparison

Brian Calhoun jr season (2005): 1,636 yds 22td's

Perry had a good year, lets just leave it at that. He doesn't belong in all time best conversations outside of all time best 2003 scUM runningbacks.

Well come on. Talent wise Perry was better than Calhoun, but I don't feel like praising a scUM player right now, so I'll leave it at that.

I guess it comes down to how you define "talented".

All I know is Perry did exactly dick before 2003 and has done exactly dick since. You'd think at some point talent would reveal itself for more than a good SR season if it existed in such abundance.
