Mizzou Tigers (official thread)

Enforcement of mandatory racial awareness and inclusion curriculum for all faculty, staff and students, controlled by a board of color.

One of the demands at the heart of the matter

If the hunger striker is a man of his word, he is going to die.

Maybe I'm missing something... but at least in the story linked there are 2 incidents of verbal harassment by seemingly "random" people. Later on are some twitter messages that are similarly anonymous in nature. By vicinity and age we're supposed to presume they're students ? That doesn't seem off base... but... what do you want the University to do about it?
I get the feeling some stuff is being left out ... given the response by numerous orgs it gives the appearance that there are issues, but without concrete examples it's hard to say what those are or form an opinion on the matter ?
I mean, if you could id the individuals personal reprimands would be in order. As far as firing staff and expelling students. But what is mandatory "sensitivity training" going to accomplish ???? I say that as somebody whose done that shit (mostly wrt sexuality, esp when DOD moved away from dont ask) ... basically we all just clicked through it, took the test at the end, and went right back to our normally scheduled shenanigans.
I guess I'd rather see them track down any offenders and drop the hammer on them... make it abundantly clear that won't be tolerated. The offenders already know what they're doing is fucked... that's why they loosely hide behind anonymity. Having them click through a web-based course isn't going to change anything.

People are still free to be assholes, even racist assholes. Vandalism (the shitty swastika) is already illegal. So the chancellor didn't assuage their feelings quickly enough for their comfort - whatever happened to resilience and ignoring aforementioned racist assholes?

Sensitivity training - by and large - is a fucking joke. All you need to do is repeat (mindlessly) whatever the teacher or CBT or whatever states, and you'll do fine.

By a board of color? That makes me laugh. Let's pursue integration by continuing to emphasize the color of your skin. Racists by and large are assholes and want some attention. Ignore them. It's not like the University is condoning it.

Yea the "board of color" thing threw me for a loop too.
It's an interesting catch-22 that a lot of anti-racism legislation, activism, etc. finds itself stuck in. Maybe it's necessary at first? I don't know... I don't think it is... but then I'm on the beneficial side as a pasty white Scotch-Irish male.
But at some point you have to break out of that paradigm lest you find yourself perpetuating the division.

Missouri president does not resign as pressure from football team mounts

Embattled University of Missouri system president Tim Wolfe did not resign Sunday, despite demands from activists and the football team during ongoing racial tensions.

Instead, Wolfe said in a statement that there would be a system-wide diversity examination.

Missouri player strike could cost Tigers $1 million to BYU

The threat of a cancellation to this week’s game between Missouri and BYU became a bit more realistic Sunday afternoon following a released statement from University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe. Boiling in controversy related to alleged negligence toward marginalized students’ experiences, students at Missouri are demanding a change in the president’s office. Wolfe released a statement on Sunday saying he and university leaders are cognizant of the concerns and have been working to address those issues, but he did not say he would resign. So, for now, the protests will continue. This could put Missouri’s game this weekend against BYU in Kansas City in jeopardy, as members of the football team have said they will not participate in any football-related activities until Wolfe is out of office.

Missouri is also two games shy of becoming bowl eligible, with three games to play (including the BYU game).

Mizzou raises Gary Pinkel’s salary to over $4 million, extends his contract through 2021

Obviously you are talking "big money" here. Even though Gary Pinkel has a contract through 2012, my guess is that if he refuses to "field a team and coach this weekend" Tim Wolfe won't be a "very happy college president" and the coach could eventually be terminated for breach of contract.

Someone is painting themselves into a real bad corner here. It will be interesting to see who "blinks" and/or backs down. Personally I can't see any of "the powers to be" at the school wanting to allow a strike by some football players to effect the removal of a college president; that would just be a bad precedent.

Historically, there is quite a bit of precedent in protests getting someone to step down. Whether it is "good" or "bad" is entirely POV,

So, the serial sexist (grab ass, off color jokes whatever) in the office is just an asshole and no amount of sensitivity training; ostracizing or ultimately taking their source of income away will change that? I do believe some people wallow in the "redneck way" and raise their kids in that proud tradition. However, I think eventually the societal costs outweigh the broadsheet rhetoric for most. Ultimately, tolerating it is a sign of approval.
