Mizzou Tigers (official thread)

So, the serial sexist (grab ass, off color jokes whatever) in the office is just an asshole and no amount of sensitivity training; ostracizing or ultimately taking their source of income away will change that? I do believe some people wallow in the "redneck way" and raise their kids in that proud tradition. However, I think eventually the societal costs outweigh the broadsheet rhetoric for most. Ultimately, tolerating it is a sign of approval.

Who said anything about tolerating this shit?

The whole premise of the protest is bullshit. And speaking personally, I've had to take sensitivity training for nearly 20 years now (when I enlisted), yet every year i hear of people in my unit or work area who does or says something stupid.

Ridicule isn't tolerating anything. However, forcing someone to go through the motions just because someone else was an asshole only wastes time/effort/energy. Move beyond what the assholes say by not letting it control you. This overreaction by this protest group is giving the fucktards who put a swastika of shit EXACTLY what they've wanted - attention.

Maybe you know more about this than I (and I haven't been able to find a lot of facts) but I find it curious that 30 division 1 athletes (plus the support of white players and the head coach) would risk their scholarships over a bullshit premise. Something may just be rotten in Missouri.

As an aside, what the hell were you like before 20 years of sensitivity training?!

17 years old and very fucking glad to have moved out of Pennsylvania

Really though for me thetraining is simply a task to check off every year. It's not teaching me anything that wasn't already beaten into my head by my parents. Treat people like you want to be treated, etc etc. As an outsider in the middle of fucking nowhere in pennsylshitolia, i got a taste of being excluded because I wasn't someone else's cousin or because I did not have 3 generations of relatives in the cemeteries around town. I'm not even talking about the stupid inbred kids I grew up with, I am talking about some of the even more stupid and inbred parents, teachers and other adults (scout leaders, sports coaches, cops) I had to be around. It's not necessarily the same, but I do feel for the actual victims of racism.

I find it insulting that they are holding an entire institution hostage for the actions of a few assholes. It's not like the university condones or is systematically racist. They receive federal money, there are certain rules and guidance they have to follow to get grants and funding, etc....

Edit to add: Mizzou is betwixt a rock and a hard place. If they cave (and they will eventually), at some point the precedent will repeat itself, likely for other reasons.

If they don't cave, they will have the death of one man and a huge cloud over their university, right or wrong. I don't see any way Mizzou comes out of this looking very good at all, and their federal money will be examined very closely.

ANSWERED: Common questions about Jonathan Butler's hunger strike
KASIA KOVACS Updated 3 hrs ago

COLUMBIA — After multiple incidents of racism at MU and a lack of response from UM System leadership, MU graduate student Jonathan Butler embarked on a hunger strike to catalyze change. Here are some answers to common questions about Butler's protest:

1. What does Butler hope to accomplish with his hunger strike?

In a Nov. 2 letter announcing the hunger strike, Butler asked the UM System Board of Curators to fire UM System President Tim Wolfe. The curators, the system's governing body, has the power to remove Wolfe from his position. Butler did not send a letter to Wolfe asking him to resign.

2. Why does Butler want Wolfe out?

FROM READERS: MU faculty member shares stories of racism
CYNTHIA FRISBY/MISSOURIAN READER 6 hrs ago

Cynthia Frisby is an associate professor in the Missouri School of Journalism. This is excerpted from a post on her Facebook page.

I have lived in Columbia and been at the university for almost 18 years. During this time, I have been called the n-word too many times to count.

My most recent experience was while jogging on Route K in May of 2015 when I was approached by a white man in a white truck with a Confederate flag very visible and proudly displayed.

He leaned out his window (now, keep in mind I run against traffic, so his behavior was a blatant sign that something was about to happen). Not only did he spit at me, he called me the n-word and gave me the finger.

Of course, I responded with, "Oh yea, get out of your car, you coward, and say that to my face." He then raced off. Typical. After the Zimmerman trial, I wrote about my experiences being called the n-word twice while I was on my jog. And yes, I have had a few faculty call me the n-word and treat me with incredible disrespect. Yes, faculty.

I have had a student who said he couldn't call me Dr. Frisby because that would mean that he thinks I am smart, and he was told that blacks are not smart and do not earn degrees without affirmative action.

Calls for Wolfe's ouster grow; curators to meet after UM president's latest statement
MISSOURIAN STAFF Updated 7 hrs ago

COLUMBIA — Graduate student organizations at MU called for a two-day walkout in response to UM System President Tim Wolfe's latest statement Sunday, saying the administration "doubled-down on 'business as usual' as the path forward for our troubled campus."

The Steering Committee of the Forum on Graduate Rights, along with the Coalition of Graduate Workers, collaborated on the reaction, saying were "outraged" by the statement and asked graduate workers to walk out Monday and Tuesday.

"This step has not been taken lightly," said the message, which was disseminated via Twitter and on the graduate forum website.

Sunday evening, the UM Board of Curators posted a notice announcing a meeting at 10 a.m. Monday in the Old Alumni Center. The board will have a brief public session followed by a closed session.

No amount of sensitivity training is going to change them, no.
Ostracization is a nonstarter when it's institutional.
Affecting their income... now we're getting somewhere imo.

Stolen from Facebook. I'm a Mizzou grad, so this hits somewhat home to me.

Stating you will not play for the University of Missouri is a pure lack of responsibility and ungratefulness. Not only to the the players that helped pave the way for your success but also to the donors who help pay for your scholarships, and the kids throughout the state who idolize you. Yes, there are issues in life greater than sport, but stating you will not follow through with a commitment YOU made to the coaches, fans, and alumni because of something you should frankly have no business being apart of during a season, is unacceptable. Playing football at the University of Missouri is a privilege, a privilege a lot individuals would take from you, if you are willing to give it up. During this time of "standing down", are you truly following through with the message sent to the public or will you still collect the monthly scholarship check to enjoy that night out, eat in the free dinning hall, earn the free degree and enjoy the free gear handed to you during your tenure at the University of Missouri?

This reads like "shut up and play for me" and "you receive a scholarship to play Division 1 sports, you're not allowed to have an opinion" to me.

Missouri Faculty Plan Walkout In Support Of Student Activists

A group of University of Missouri faculty plan to walk out of their classrooms for the next two days to "stand in solidarity with the Mizzou student activists who are advocating for racial justice on our campus."

The news comes a day after some football players said they would not play another game until university system President Tim Wolfe steps down.

The Columbia Missourian reports that the professors said they will spend Monday and Tuesday at the university quad "to respond to student questions in the form of a teach in."

As we've reported, for months now a group of students has been demanding that the university address what they say is systemic racism on campus. Throughout the protest, the university has been rocked by a series of racially charged incidents. It all came to a head when student protesters confronted Wolfe at a homecoming parade.

There just has to be more to this than I have read so far.

If not this is the biggest overreaction since, since I don't even fucking know.

I'm pretty much fundamentally opposed to throwing a sacrifice to an angry mob however.

I read the first story @Dryden posted from the associate professor - she was insulted and spat at while on a jog - why is that Mizzou's problem? Some kid had morons for parents and couldn't believe someone who is black achieved a doctorate without help due to her race. Again, why is this Mizzou's problem?

The biggest issue is when she stated she has been insulted and called things by other members of the faculty. Did she report it? Where those reports followed up on? Was it documented? Mizzou receives federal money - they better be documenting such things unless they are going to go all Ped State on us here (which I doubt out of hope more than anything)....if the institution did receive her report and brushed it under the rug, THAT'S a problem and a problem that needs to be fixed immediately.

The thing about the angry mob basically surrounding the President's car during the homecoming parade is very very odd to say the least.
