Mixed Martial Arts (Official Thread)

I thought Paddy probably would have lost had his opponent not given up the third round. So stupid for that dude to do what he did. Dana called him out after the event. Paddy was clearly injured. His foot and three fingers/knuckles all might be broken, according to his post-fight presser.

Till/Du Plessis was awesome, and I think Du Plessis is going to be a future champ. Dude is massive for his weight class. Till, on the other hand… has lost 5/6.

The main bout was bleh. A draw. One judge fucked it up, and for once it wasn’t Sal D’amato. I actually didn’t have an issue with it being a draw. But Cleary’s scorecard didn’t make sense. I thought D’amato actually had it right overall. First three rounds to Jan, last two for Magomed. Last round was arguably a 10-8.

Francis Ngannou is no longer in the UFC. I think this is a stupid move for both him and the UFC.

Also, Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane on March 4th. Will be interesting to see Jones at HW.. he's been bulking and taking his time with it. Probably roiding too, given he and both of his brothers have all tested positive for PEDs. Arthur and Chandler both popped in the NFL.

Some great fights announced here recently. And just announced that Conor & Chandler will coach TUF and then fight. Lets goooooooooo!!!!
Tonight is also Bellator 290 on CBS at 9:00 to see Fedor Emelianenko's (arguably the MMA GOAT) retirement fight. It's only a 3-fight main card, and the middleweight co-main event should be a banger. Johnny Eblen has been awesome so far and is starting to get more hype built up around him.

What's your prediction?
My head says Makhachev in maybe the 2nd round by submission or GnP TKO. Makhachev is a big 145er, he will have a big height advantage, and he has no known flaws in his game. My heart really loves the complete and utter dog that is Volkanowski. Volk's chance in this lies in surviving the first few rounds, and having a bigger gas tank in the championship rounds, where he would really have to pour it on, as we haven't seen real 1-punch KO power out of him at the lower weight class, which means it would be surprising if it surfaced up a weight class.

How do you see it going?

I agree. My head says Makhachev, but I'd love for Volk to get the W.... I can't really envision Volk stopping Islam, so it would have to be a decision for him IMO. I can see Islam stopping Volk though. I'll go with Islam by submission in the 2nd. Unfortunately I have to work early Sunday morning, so I'll miss it.

I thought Islam won the fight, but Volk made it about as close as possible. One of the best/most evenly matched fights I've seen. Volk is a monster.

Credit to Islam though. He was better on his feet than I expected and had more takedowns. The controversy stems from Islam controlling Volk's back the entire fourth round, but not doing anything with it. And Volk pummeled Islam's face the entire time. No doubt that Islam took more damage during that than Volk did.

Regardless, I still thought Islam barely won. They must rematch.

Bumping for the return of Jon Jones for the Heavyweight strap on Saturday...

ps. Volk won.

Sportsbook Event - UFC 285: Jones vs Gane (Main Card)

This card is fucking STACKED. I'm really bored and going on a deep dive here.

Aside from Jones/Gane. Which.. I'm still not sure who to pick. Jones has always been very fast. He's added a ton of weight. Will he still have his speed? He hasn't fought for three years. Gane is a great athlete with a pretty great skillset at HW. Feels like Gane is going to take it, but Jon is the GOAT. I can't not pick Jones until he actually loses.

Future title contenders all over the place though. Du Plessis is on the undercard and is rightfully pissed. Dude is a monster. I think he's a future champ. Personally think he could be a top five fighter in his division right now (he's ranked 10). We're going to find out, because he's fighting the #5 fighter in his division in Derek Brunson. Can't believe this isn't on the main card. I'm picking Du Plessis. Vegas is too. Shows you how good Du Plessis is when he's rank 10 and the favorite everywhere over #5.

I think the Gamrot/Turner fight is super interesting. Turner has a unique body for his weight class. Tall, lanky, big reach and he has power. Gamrot is a phenomenal wrestler and a monster in his own right. But I think every Jalin Turner fight is interesting because of his unique advantages vs. guys 4-8 inches shorter on average. Justin Gaethje is the second biggest dude in the division at 5'11. Turner is 6'3. Most dudes are between 5'7-5'10. I'm picking Gamrot because I don't think Turner is quite ready for the next level yet.. but I don't really feel great about it.

Shavkat Rakhmonov is another guy I'm looking forward to seeing again. Looks like he could be a serious contender in the near future, but the division is probably one of the strongest divisions in the history of the UFC. He's still undefeated, hasn't fought too many names yet. Geoff Neal is pretty fucking solid, so this should be a good one. I'm picking Shavkat.

Bo Nickal is another up and coming guy who looks like the real deal. Only three fights in MMA, but he's easily one of more accomplished wrestlers outside the UFC we've ever seen. I'm always intrigued by guys who were standouts in college wrestling. They usually do extremely fucking well.. Mark Coleman, Kevin Randleman (both Buckeyes - also absolutely juiced to the tits like most of these names coming up here), Brock Lesnar, Johnny Hendricks were all NCAA champ wrestlers who also won UFC belts. Other standouts in NCAA were Randy Couture, Jon Jones, Chael Sonnen, Daniel Cormier, Matt Hughes, Cain Velasquez, Chris Weidman, Dan Severn.. all were UFC champs, but not NCAA champs. Bo Nickal won three national championships at State Penn (runner up once), three big 10 titles (third once), two golds in National Championships and U23 World Championships. So he's probably going to beat the ever living fuck out of his opponent, and most everyone else if history repeats itself for literally the 13th time.

Valentina Shevchenko is on the card, I am a huge fan. She just beats people down. Last fight was really close, so we'll see.

The Garbrandt fight was canceled. Probably for the best...

Just really looking forward to this one. Pumped. Been pumped about it since it was announced. I also helped set up a boxing/MMA event the last two days and saw some live combat. Good stuff. Side note: Joe Burrow was interested enough to come to have the staff set up a table. But sadly, I didn't get to meet Joey B. I left before he got there (if he went).

Garbrandt fight was not canceled, like I said. Got some bad info.

Du Plessis beat the fuck out of Brunson in the second round. Brunson’s corner threw in the towel (literally). Brunson controlled the first. Both guys looked like the least conditioned athletes on the planet. Gassed at the beginning of round 2…
