Pretty good for a northern team
We had a coach a while ago that took them to near-non-dumpster-fire status. They named the baseball stadium after him, of course. Bill Davis IIRC

Mississippi State relieved head football coach Zach Arnett of his duties Monday morning. Arnett compiled a 4-6 record (1-6 SEC) in the 2023 season through 10 games in his first year as full-time coach. Senior offensive analyst Greg Knox will serve as Mississippi State interim coach through the final two games of the season, according to ESPN.Arnett was elevated from defensive coordinator to interim coach in 2022 following the untimely death of the legendary Mike Leach. After leading the team to an emotional victory in the ReliaQuest Bowl, the administration decided to promote Arnett to full-time coach during the offseason in lieu of conducting a national search for Leach's replacement.

If you had given me a hundred guesses as to who Zach Arnett was, I never would have said football coach. Let alone SEC.

Exactly.
I know Miss State is about the lowest tier SEC football school, besides maybe Vandy (although they have the academics, so you could argue Moo State is lower), he was still way over his head.
Mike Leach, and to an extent Dan Mullen, shows that Miss State can be a respectable 7-9 wins more seasons than not type of program. That's probably their ceiling, but they don't have to settle for being a 4 win type program either.

Kentucky was down there with Vandy until Stoops. Now they’re okay, occasionally getting 10 wins but are no longer a doormat.
I think Kentucky fans who want stoops fired because he can’t elevate that program further are foolish and will be kicking themselves once Kentucky regresses to a 4-6 win program if they get their way and Fire Stoops.
He does get paid too much however.
