Mississippi State Bulldogs (official thread)

I am honestly surprised in situations like this that the leaders of the team don't go to the coach and say coach I don't want this piece of [Mark May] on the team or in the locker room.
I sure hope your sarcasm font was on... The leaders on the team are still kids, kids who want to win football games.

Eh maybe it cause I was from a small town that sucked at most sports but our teams didn't put up with that shit. Now neither did the school so it almost never came up but still. Kids got kicked off the team and usually sent to Juvy for taking drugs to school and a weight room "fight" where the kid blindsided another with a barbell for hitting on his girl. Though everyone at the school kind of figured the latter was roid rage.

I hear you, but in the land of big time D1 football, wins matter above almost everything. Jeremy Hill got in a fight during the season and his punishment was voted on by the team, and little happened. And when it comes down to it, star players will almost always get the benefit of the doubt. If this kid can get them to beat Ole Miss a few times, get a win over LSU and/or Bama and be towards the top of the SEC west, then even if he hits another woman on campus, MSU will see his signing as a win. I'd dare to bet that if Baylor could do it all again, they'd do little different other than hide the victims better. They were relevant on a national stage for the first time, and MSU is looking for the same thing regardless of the cost...

Greg Sankey: Wouldn't say SEC 'comfortable' with Jeffery Simmons ruling

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on Friday disputed the characterization by Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin of the league office being "comfortable" with the university's decision to allow Jeffery Simmons to enroll and play football for the Bulldogs.

"I would say awareness and comfort are two different things," Sankey said. "It is an institutional decision. The characterization of comfort with [Mississippi State's] decision is not a characterization I would provide."

Mississippi State chooses football over doing the right thing

Mississippi State had a chance to take a stand Thursday, to prove that the sordid mess at Baylor could bring a teachable moment to football programs beholden to winning at all costs.

Instead, we got more of the same. A school president bowing at the feet of the football program? Future victories over doing the right thing? Botched explanations for decisions? Yes, please!

In all honesty, the video is not nearly as bad as I've seen in the past. It appeared as though his goal was to break the fight up, not to attack a woman on the ground. Then I had to rewind the tape a few times to see when he was hitting her, because I kept missing it. It looks about like he slaps rapidly 4-5 times, but could be a closed fist. She is laying on the ground for a while afterwards, which makes it look worse. All in all, it's really hard to tell what went on, and what everyone on the street was saying and who was provoking who. A smart guy just stays away, and trys to talk his sister out of it before it escalates, or after he pulled them apart, he should have walked away. It feels almost like the Hyde situation (though slightly worse) where I can only assume as he was standing over her the woman provoked him verbally (although the woman didn't hit him like with Hyde) and then he responded stupidly, then walked away. My gut feeling is this feels like a minimum 6 game suspension, maximum should be be a greyshirt, make him pay for a year of school and if he stays clean let him back the next year. Any other issues over his next 4 years should then be kicked out of school. Anywhere in there feels about right. 1 game suspension is pretty weak. Kicking him out would feels like overkill. This isn't malicious assault of girlfriend or rape, this is wrong place wrong time, was likely provoked when trying to break up a fight and his emotions got away from him.
