Mirror Lake Jump (official thread)

How come the fraternity/sorority and other student organizations don't help out with the cleaning up process? Or take some money out of their coffers to help offset the cost of repairs/cleaning?

This is absolutely disgusting. I've done some stupid, stupid things when I was drunk but ducking myself into a steaming cesspool of disease has never been one of them. When the beaches in Cali get a sewage leak like this, we close the beaches.

Tradition or not, no way would I fling myself into Mirror Lake.

Does sound like a blast to go watch OTHER idiots do it, however!!!

Here's a whole crapload of youtube videos of this activity.

every body of water on the planet is polluted and has bird/fish/any other aquatic creature shit in it. people have been going in those bodies of water for thousands of years.

edit: not to mention the fact that the water is so cold that it kills the germs.

Not every body of water can claim an 18% level of coliform bacteria. Also, comparing huge oceans with active currents to an artificial pond on a college campus with a broken fountain is a bit of a stretch. :)

I don't know for sure, not having been in a sorority but I do recall reading about fees/dues and fundraisers. So...those coffers.....

Instead of throwing a kegger one weekend, how about paying for some new sod on the lakeside of one's beloved O-HI-O? Or am I being too logical and need to take a "time out?"

In the mind of a frat boy.... the phrase "Instead of throwing a kegger" is illogical in and of itself.

I'm not going to get into the nitty gritty.. but... this kind of thing doesn't really fit into the public service profile of the Greek System at Ohio State. Not sure why, exactly... but... lets just say this, they are not going to give money or time to offset costs (particularly out of their own pockets) such as these to a University that has more or less treated them like criminals for the duration of the "Inter-Gee" years. The most obvious argument would be, "Hey, we pay our tuition like everyone else, why us and not them?" The cost would be prohibitive for an individual organization (Believe it or not, most of them operate at a loss over time)... and... if it were presented to all of them to kick in, say $200 bucks each... I beleive the reaction would be more along the lines that they'd rather kick 10K to Columbus Children's hospital or one of the other Greek community wide philanthropies.

True. And your point is? It isn't anything even close to dunking yourself naked in a still pond with an 18% level of the bacteria. I'm not going to catch Tetanus from my toothbrush. I just watched a bunch of videos of this tradition and hardly anyone even bothered to close their mouth or protect their eyes.

It wasn't my article, I didn't write those things about Mirror Pond, I was only commenting about the article. I'm not dissing the tradition, only the carelessness with which it is performed.

Is there some reason you feel the need to defend Mirror Pond?
Or are you just feeling rambunctious today?

Ok, so some resentment and a "fuck em, they can do it." attitude hanging about, gotcha. Thanks for helping clear that up!

Lets just say the Kirwan administration didn't exactly... ummm... get it.

What lunacy do you think he would have to cook up to get the Fraternities suing the University (and winning) for violating their 3rd amendment rights?

Yeah... 3rd amendment... that's not a typo.

And I won't leave you hanging.

umm.... i give up. what lunacy DID he cook up? what, were the ROTC cadets crashing in the Greek houses?

Long story short... they cooked up a long list of new requirements for the houses... and... one of them was to have an in-house graduate student as an "advisor"-- this isn't uncommon, and not unreasonable in the grand scheme of things... but the notice of this requirement was only about 60 days in advance of the need to find said advisor ... if you couldn't find one, one would be assigned to you, who would live in your facility free of charge.\

Needless to say, the response to that was a flat, "no."

Ah, the "agent of the state" thing with implied right to privacy?
