Game Thread Minnesota @ Ohio State - 10/13/18, 12:00PM (FS1)

You pull arguably the best player on the team out of the game subbing Tate for Haskins. Now, if we put both in together or both Weber and JK then ok...

Because situationally, you should always go with the highest percentage play.

Yes, Haskins is a significantly better QB than Tate.

On 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 when everyone knows we want to slam it inside, Haskins turns into a weakness since he’s poor in the run game and doesn’t run with power.

I can unequivocally promise, our conversion rate would be much higher in short yardage if Martell were operating the zone read or slam QB runs.

That isn’t a knock on Haskins.....it’s just a strategic decision that gives team best chance to convert in short yardage.

It’s a matter of play calling. Wildcats and jet sweeps just don’t cut it on the red zone . We haven’t seen the fade to Victor or just a quick slant yet that I can recall...
The lack of corner fades in the redzone with Victor is mind boggling. Kid can jump and catch and Haskins can put it where it is needed. It amazes me that they try that jet sweep failure after failure. It really chaps my ass. Or the quick slant. What?

NO. WHY? You put Tate in the redzone and teams will adjust to what he is doing. No different. Why take your best player out of the game who is proven to produce in tight situations. Get the play calling right that suits this teams game. No reason to take him off the field unless injured or up by 30
They’ll just adjust? Just like that? They’ll just do it?

You take the best player out bc regardless of how good he is, it’s not working. Forcing the defense to figure out what Tate is going to do on random occasions isn’t as simple as “just stopping it”.

For the record, I’m not calling for Tate in redzone....I’m calling for Tate in specific 1-2 yard situations, in which it’s important to keep LB’s and DE’s honest and prevent them from slanting without any concern for the QB keep.

Learn how to go under center and use 2 backs and a tight end. Or, heaven forbid we throw on 4th and 1 with a little TE drag. It’s play calling. I agree slamming JK or Weber into the line is asinine, but it isn’t the first time we’ve seen stubborn play calling in these situations.

What? It is working when they play to their strengths in the red zone. I think we are misunderstanding each other. Infrequent occasions is perfectly fine. Don't become predictable and take the best player out of the game for no reason other than "we can't run the ball in the red zone". Many options to go too with Haskins anywhere on the field and the receivers at his disposal. That's if they dedicate this offense to a pro style.

Meyer did this all the time in 2006 with a true freshman quarterback named Tim Tebow (Chris Leak was the starting quarterback for that Florida Gators team).

I honestly expected Meyer to use Martell in a similar fashion (maybe not to "slam it inside", but some sort of read-option or run-pass option where Martell can use his feet to his advantage). If Martell can't add that dimension to this team, then he's pretty much worthless - just another back-up QB who's waiting to get passed on the depth chart by a new recruit.

No....this is poor strategic thinking. We are a shotgun team. Asking them to go under center and run downhill, when the timing is completely different, is asking for so much trouble. Not too mention the QB/Center exchange will suck and be delayed bc they aren’t used to doing it.

I don’t see why it’s so taboo to put a super mobile QB who has shown a knack for making good reads, in short yardage situations. It keeps everything in unison, except for who is executing the zone read. It forces defenses to be honest and prevents Haskins from taking unnecessary hits or making reads he isn’t great at.

Hey man.....The Saints are actually taking Brees off the field on 3rd and short in some situations and letting Taysom Hill run QB slams and operate zone read.

If the NFL leader in passing yardage can come off the field situationally, why the hell not Haskins? It’s simple math. Go with the higher percentage play to move the chains.

Do we have to worry about Young's effort? Is he going to be one of those guys at the draft they say has tons of talent but takes plays off all the time?
Maybe. I do. But I also set the bar really, really high because Young is being compared to the Bosa brothers, who redefined "effort" at Ohio State.
