Unfortunately (or fortunately) the reckless play calling is not new to just LSU but is part of Miles' coaching style...we only hope for more of the same on Jan 7th (and to expose this flaw through "putting points on the board"

Clock management and time out management are two valid criticisms. We led the SEC in penalties by a wide margin. Lots of delay games as a result of the play getting in late or not having the right personnel on the field for the play called.

JT's rep took a hit last year when Meyer clearely outcoached him. That was a first, but still enough to show that it could be done. That being said, To me , it appears that Meyer has been great everywhere. I really don't know enough about Miles to have a strong opinion.

I know Tress won the one head to head they played, but what was the spread in that game. I seem to remember being nervous of that Okie St. team before that game.

If this is JohnLSU, which I think it is, he has been the most respectful and intelligent LSU poster I have seen on this board and also on TigerForums, and should be treated with the respect that he has shown us on every occasion. That said, I don't think that comment was a knock on LSU's team, as much a comment on the coaching.

The question (this thread) was about Coaching not teams...hence the title Miles vs Tressel

Here are a few stats on Miles' career at LSU that I posted a while back. Being that they are relevant to this discussion, I'll post them again. Bear in mind that I'm not arguing the fact that Miles is a better coach, just posting some stats in favor of Miles. Also, I'm not quite sure which game I posted these after, so they are not completely accurate. I know it was before the Arkansas & Tennessee games.

This is where this conversation should have went originally. Anyone can manipulate numbers to look however they want them. Plus alot of numbers are skewed due to the overall talent each coach is playing with.

But back to Tressel v Miles, this is about gameday coaching as I believe Miles as shown he can get talent and coach up his talent to their potential. But to me it seems like on the field he does not get the most out of that talent.

Penalties and clock management are issues. But I want to point out the feel of coaching. At anytime since Miles has been at LSU has he clearly "outcoached" his opponent? Or has the talent edge made up for poor coaching decisions? I mean seriously what was up with that weird play he did against Alabama when they simulated the snap to try to get the defense to go offsides?

That I think is the major opinion of Ohio State fans. They look at Miles as winning in spite of his coaching decisions. So when you get down to deciding who is the better coach Tressel would get the nod. And most of America would agree.

How big will those coaching decisions play on January 7th? That is the million dollar question. As Miles could make some bad decisions but the talent that LSU has might overcome that like that have this season. Or Miles could coach a great game but still lose.

But all coaches can make bad decisions, but I believe that if you would put a poll up for college football fans they would believe that Miles would be the most likely coach to make that one mistake more often than Tressel.

I would agree with that. Miles has been labeled as a riverboat gambler and it has turned out positive more times than negative this year. The downside is that if you play with fire long enough, sooner or later you're going to get burned.
