Vick could face state charges

By the Associated Press

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. ? Michael Vick's legal troubles from dogfighting could get even worse. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback faces possible prosecution in state court, where punishment might far exceed the maximum five years in prison that could await him in his federal case.
"The real question is how much overlap there would be between anything the local prosecutor would charge and what the federal prosecutors charged," said Linda Malone, a criminal procedure expert and Marshall-Wythe Foundation professor of law at the College of William and Mary. "There are some limitations on duplication."

Bob Smizik: Even Vick can redeem himself

Wednesday, August 22, 2007
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The public outrage over the Michael Vick saga will not go away, and understandably so. Any recounting of Vick's subhuman treatment of dogs -- fighting them, hanging them, drowning them -- makes decent people, not just dog lovers, cringe. Yet, he and his associates seemed to revel in these brutal executions. Vick is not only a bad person, but also one who could well be psychologically disturbed. His evil was not caused by a momentary lapse in judgment. It was premeditated and cold-blooded.
In a society that should be close to shock proof, Vick has succeeded in outraging the world with his twisted deeds.

MyFox Dallas | Vick's Jerseys Are Going to the Dogs

Some angry Atlanta football fans are making sure Michael Vick?s old jerseys go straight to the dogs.

The Atlanta Humane Society said more than a dozen Vick jerseys arrived in the mail on Tuesday, and e-mails indicated more were on the way.

Many Atlanta Falcons fans were outraged over Vick's alleged participation in dog-fighting, and charges he took part in killing under-performing dogs. Vick is expected to plead guilty to charges, his lawyer announced Tuesday.

Some jerseys were being used as bedding and for clean-up in dog kennels.

Pit bulls have a bad reputation, but they can be really nice dogs, when not put in the hands of assholes. Just like any breed, it's all about proper training. In fact, the pit bull that was owned by Qyntel Woods was adopted by someone who trained it properly, and the dog was reformed from a fighting dog to a lap dog. Pit bulls are used as therapy dogs, too. It's a shame that assholes have given the dogs a bad rep, because they really can be sweethearts.

Agree somewhat, however pit bulls have a tendacy of unrulely behavior worse than most dogs I've been around. There kinda like a roided out body builder with a nonchalant, "I don't have to listen to you asshole" attitude. Yes they can be sweet, but not always.

I don't know that I would want a pit bull as therapy dog, they're to strong for their own good.

NFL should let Vick play after sentence, NAACP says

ATLANTA -- An NAACP leader said Michael Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL, preferably the Atlanta Falcons, after serving his sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation.

"As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," said R.L. White, president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter. "We further ask the NFL, Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country."
White said the Falcons quarterback is a human being who has made a mistake and should be allowed to prove that he has learned from that mistake.

This is very funny.....

On Monday, New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury was in Albany, N.Y., promoting his brand of affordable sneakers. He was asked about Michael Vick, and said, according to Newsday:

"We don't say anything about people shooting deers and shooting other animals, you know what I mean? From what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors and I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down ... I think he fell into a bad situation."

I just read a pretty substantial report on dogfighting which said that dogs trained by outfits such as Bad Newz aren't necessarily dangerous to humans, but that the pitbulls owned by the average thug "street fighter" are inherently vicious and will attack anything/anyone other than their "alpha male" owners who typically abuse them in order to "train" them for impromptu street fights. The paradox is that I, and more importantly, my children, are not going to come into contact with dogs like Vick had/fought which are relatively less dangerous to people, but are more likely to come across the vicious, abused dogs of idiot thugs and white trash that are extremely dangerous and likely to attack a child without provocation. It may not be the dogs' fault, but as we say in Da Dirrrty South, that don't confront me.

Actually it has more to do with the perception that if Vick was white, he wouldn't be in as much trouble as he is in now. Sadly, American history and current events has shown that they are probably right.

I wouldn't doubt that Vick's case is not only the biggest, highest profile prosecution under the new statute, but that it is also one of the first felony cases involving dogfighting.
Wait!! I think Bush set this up because he hates black people.

Hunting is a sport that some of us partake in because it is in the spirit in of taking meat and outfoxing prey and their natural ability to avoid us (predators). Having two dogs fight to the death and then killing the lesser attacker because it is insufficient is an entirely different matter altogether.

It has been hilarious to see the stupid explanations givens by Marbury, Portess and Deion Sanders. I am sure I am missing more of these guys. Idiots.

Complete bullshit. Stupidest and most cowardly thing I have heard from tibor to date. Then again, they eat dogs in India so I can see why you'd be so insensitive towards man's best friend - a term coined in the USA.

More from the same wire report that Junkie quoted above...

Three Vick associates have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and say Vick provided nearly all the gambling and operating funds for the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting enterprise. Two of them also said Vick participated in executing at least eight underperforming dogs, raising the possibility of the animal cruelty charges.

Last month, state and local leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged the public not to rush to judgment in the Vick case. The civil rights organization said animal rights groups, talk radio and the news media were vilifying the embattled athlete, and that his team and corporate sponsors were prematurely punishing Vick.

White said the Atlanta chapter supports Vick's decision to accept a plea bargain if it's in his best interest, but he questioned the credibility of Vick's co-defendants, saying an admission of guilt might be more about cutting losses than the truth.

"At this point, you're not looking at guilt or innocence," White said, referring to the possible harsher sentence Vick could have received had he taken his case to trial and been found guilty. "You're thinking, 'What I better do is cut my losses and take a plea.' But if he saw this as the best thing to do at this point for his future, then I think he made the correct choice."

White said he regretted that the plea deal will mean all the facts of the case might never be known.

"Some have said things to save their own necks," White said. "Michael Vick has received more negative press than if he had killed a human being."
White said he does not support dogfighting and that he considers it as bad as hunting.

"His crime is, it was a dog," White said.

I love how Vick's supporters keep throwing hunting under the bus, but I don't hunt so I don't have a dog in that fight....

Normally starting extremely large strawman type arguments, which bringing hunting in the equation would mean, don't work out for the best for the people starting the argument in the first place.

But I will say, what's the disconnect here? The guy is pleading guilty. That's an admission of guilt to the charges. But he's also right, we won't know all the facts, mainly because I wonder if there was going to be some RICO stuff thrown at Vick if he hadn't taken the plea deal.....

I noticed this too, his supporters are treating it like this is the fault of everyone else, people hunt and eat meat which kills animals, so therefore everyone is as bad as Vick. :roll1:
