Mike Vick (Pittsburgh Steelers)

I'm no KFed out there defending Vick but a friend posed an interesting question to me. What's the difference between bullfighting and what Vick did? Most people don't relish bullfighting but don't condemn it.

I am not sure about the legality of Bullfighting in the states, I know it's legal in Mexico, everytime we cross the border we see flyers and what-not for it. However, I think that the legality has a bit to do with it. Also, it's the "mans best friend" factor, if this were cockfighting I am pretty sure there wouldn't be near the outcry because people can't relate to the animals as much, Chicken = food, Dog = pet. Both, however, are illegal in the states so who knows.

The opinion was offered on "Mike & Mike" this morning that the Vick case is one of the most racially divisive events of the past decade in ATL. Apparently polls show that whites are predominantly of the "let him fry" persuasion, while blacks are predominantly of the "it was just dogs; they're harassing poor Mike" persuasion.

If true, this says quite a bit about attitudes toward animals and pets in the African-American community.:(

Actually it has more to do with the perception that if Vick was white, he wouldn't be in as much trouble as he is in now. Sadly, American history and current events has shown that they are probably right.

Based on the historical criminal leniency towards white QBs who are found to be gambling, running dog fighting schemes and bludgeoning /drowning defenseless dogs?:(

Anyone have any idea how many federal prosecutions for dog fighting there have been in the last five years?
Very few feloniy cases - largely because the statute at a Federal level to make it a felony were only signed into law by Bush on May 3rd.

I wouldn't doubt that Vick's case is not only the biggest, highest profile prosecution under the new statute, but that it is also one of the first felony cases involving dogfighting.

Vick May Still Face Charges in Virginia
By LARRY O'DELL
Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Michael Vick's legal troubles from dogfighting could get even worse. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback faces possible prosecution in state court, where punishment might far exceed the maximum five years in prison that could await him in his federal case.
Local prosecutor Gerald Poindexter has said he likely will pursue charges against Vick, who has plummeted from favorite son to a symbol of animal abuse in the four months since authorities raided his Surry County property. Poindexter says the case could go before a county grand jury Sept. 25.
Poindexter did not return messages left by The Associated Press at his office and on his cell phone Tuesday.
Among the state laws Vick could be charged with violating are those against dogfighting and animal cruelty. Both are felonies punishable by up to five years in prison.
