Mike Leach (HC Mississippi State, a National Treasure, R.I.P.)

Oh man, this is going to get soooooo ugly.

The bigger issue is that it is going to be ugly for a long time in the courts. Leach might be nuts, but he is not stupid. This is going to hurt for TT.

Seems like the James clan might end up wishing they'd never pried open this particular can of worms--they're gonna be in the middle of this mess right along with Leach for, as you say, a very, very long time. (If I was Leach, I'd make sure of it). Start composing those depositions now.

A secondary question: what does this do to other schools & other coaches? Won't the specter of this event hover over every practice field where there is an over-zealous parent involved?

From what I've read, TT is not on the hook for the 400k/yr if firing for cause. I'll let one of our legalese types weigh in on how that should play out.

I'm no legal type but I can guarantee that Leech sues TT for a whole helluva lot more than even the total value of the contract. If TT is lucky, they "might" just be able to sell just the 400k/year. This suit will start with wrongful termination and they'll be seeking the full unpaid value of the contract, then they'll add on some defamation and add on some real money. Defamation is very real here because Leech can claim that the way that TT has handled this thing in the public has hurt his ability to get another similar position in the future. I could see the initial suit seeking over $100 million, and if TT/James' can't prove any real woringdoing, they might just get it.

There's a reason that when CEO's, Presidents, and other such high profile people are fired, they are politely asked to leave. This is the reason.

If we are going to be doing vBets on this, I think a good one is to bet whether Mike Leech mentions wanting to have a duel with either Craig James or the president of TT. I was wager a reasonable sum that he'll bring that up at some point. (and I wouldn't blame him)

From 1925 - 2000 TTU was 426-350-32 .547
Leach 2000-2008 was 84-43 .661

Spike Dykes did a very respectable job there, and it's a shame people forget that. They played us hard when we played them way before Leach got there. Thing is though, Texas Tech is one of those schools that has to do something different...call it gimmick, call it alternative, call it whatever you want...if they're going to compete at the national level with schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and TCU in the area. Therefore, he was a perfect fit, because he ran an offense really well that hardly anyone else does, and he did it in such a way that made them part football team, part circus attraction. I doubt they'll find anyone else who can do that especially successfully (see Todd Dodge in Denton if you need an example) and no coach who waltzes in and starts talking Pro Set and special teams is going to win 10 games in a place like Lubbock.

Not to mention the fact that Leach could be wacky as fuck in Lubbock and no one cared.... I doubt his shtick plays at a more traditional power.

Mike Leach's new mantra:

Happiness is Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror.

With a big chunk of change in my bank account.

I can't help but wonder if Leach has been planning his exit all along. I doubt that the James situation is the sole factor in all of this.

I've got to agree. This all happened way too fast for it to be based solely on the James incident.
