Mike Leach (HC Mississippi State, a National Treasure, R.I.P.)

Anybody else see the quote from Chris Perry that they put up on CFB Live? They're just fishing for ways to bury Leach. They're spinning this as though every single player on the team is thrilled to see Leach go. [censored]ing amazing. I'm astounded that ESPN can pull something like this with no apparent shame. I hope he sues the living hell out of them for libel and slander. Crazy people like him are good for one thing: putting the screws to assholes who think they can pull [censored] like this. Go get em, Mike.

ESPN posted this from Shawn Byrnes, TTech's center:

"There is no question (Leach) understood offense and understood football. But he didn't understand how to deal with people. Everyone is excited about this, to be honest. Adam (james (sic)) took a stand. We have no idea why he was in a shed. How could you punish a kid for having a concussion? What could that possibly accomplish?"

Posting that, and not anything like the quote in this thread from Graham Harrell, is blatantly biased.

We can only hope that other (actual) journalists jump on this story to highlight ESPN's bias.

Later, this exchange between Trevor Matich and Eric Kuselias.

TM: "But it sounds like there may be something where there's fire. Because it sounds like the players are legitimately angry, and the players know what happened. If they're mad, something did."

EK: "And clearly, the players angry, and you've got the quotes here."

EDIT - via the ESPNU ticker, here's the quote from DT Chris Perry: "I have no complaints about this decision. (Leach) put Adam in a shed like an animal? Like an animal in a cage? That was bull ... We had less stress this week. You now why? because he's gone."

I understand that a provision in Leach's contract sets out that he is to receive $800,000 if he is the TT coach on December 31, 2009.

Makes the timing thing a little clearer. Makes the Texas Tech legal team's defense a little harder. They appear to have launched him prior to a thorough review of the allegations to save money. Mike and the AD were not friends. This should cost the AD his job as well.

EDSBS ? Archive ? DID YOU ORDER THE CODE SHED?

A FEW GOOD PIRATES

Gerald Meyers (Tech AD): *Coach Leach, did you order the Code Shed?*

Kent Hance: You *don’t* have to answer that question!

Coach Leach: I’ll answer the question!

[to Meyers]

Coach Leach: You want answers?

Meyers: I think I’m entitled.

Coach Leach: *You want answers?*

Meyers: *I want the truth!*

Coach Leach: *You can’t handle the truth!*

[pauses]

Coach Leach: Son, we live in a world that has sidelines, and those sidelines have to be guarded by pirates with swords. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Meyers? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for James, and you curse the Pirates. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That James’s small shed, while tragic, probably saved games. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves games. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties with your fat little girlfriends, you want me on those sidelines, you need me on those sidelines. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very bowl games that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a sword, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Meyers: Did you order the Code Shed?

Coach Leach: I did the job I…

Meyers: *Did you order the Code Shed?*

Coach Leach: *You’re G**damned right I did!*

On Outside the Lines about an hour ago, they stated that there was a 10-day period for some reason, and that he wouldn't really be completely gone until after that 10-day period, so he would probably receive the 800K bonus that he's due tomorrow.

Sorry, I didn't hear clearly what the 10-day period was for. I know that some contracts (I believe RR's at TSUN) have clauses where the coach has a time period to respond to charges and have a hearing when he's being fired for cause. But I'm not sure if Leach's contract has that same type of clause.

It's hard to imagine Mike Leach's 10-year tenure at Texas Tech ending in a more fittingly bizarre fashion. The law school grad sent his lawyer to a courthouse in hopes of getting his suspension lifted, only to come back with a termination letter.

Leach's one-of-a-kind persona was defined by defiance. Ultimately, it brought about his demise.

Leach, who went 84-43 and took his team to 10 straight bowl games, was ostensibly fired for his mistreatment of a player with a mild concussion, but don't be fooled. The allegations by Adam James' family were a convenient excuse for school president Guy Bailey and athletic director Gerald Myers to rid themselves of a coach who, despite bringing the school considerable prestige, never fully earned their respect and butted heads with the administration for years (most notably in last winter's contentious contract negotiations). When the school rushed to suspend him Monday, we all knew where this was headed.

By firing Leach "with cause" (we'll have to wait and see whether that part holds up in the inevitable lawsuit to come), the school will get out paying him a potentially expensive buyout ($400,000 a year for the next four years). It may be about to lose far more than that, however, in canceled season tickets, diminished respect, and, quite possibly, many lost football games.

.../contd/...

Actually the best summation of this fiasco I've seen written up thus far.

Even if that's true they won't be sending him a check for 800k next week. They know a lawsuit is coming either way, so they won't pay a dime until it is litigated or settled out of court. It is in the best interest of both parties to reach an accord rather than have their dirty laundry aired in a courtroom, and reported on ESPN.

What I don't understand is, if the contract negotiations last year were so contentious then why the hell did they sign him? If they did, in fact, now look for a reason to fire him a year later the idiot(s) who did the deal need to get fired, too, for stupidity.

The "Fat Girlfriends" comments (and the fact that the term "Fat Girlfriends" was used repeatedly) would be hard to defend, even in Lubbock, Texas. Consider it more a cumulative effect.

Personally I thought the guy did as much with as little as any coach around, especially compared to ol' the-cupboard-was-bare-strategic-advantage Weissburger, or his buddy in AA, Dick Wad.

And a go-to-hell card worth only 800K tells you this is not a final destination job. Makes you wonder what insiders knew that his name never seemed to come up in those whose-going-to-be-the-next-Rockne discussions.
