Mike Gundy (HC Oklahoma St. Cowboys)

Wow, that was one helluva tirade, I agree with what he said, there shouldn't be comments about the student athletes when questions regarding a program come up, they should always be the coaching staff. Those are the guys getting paid to put the right players in the correct positions and design the plays to win games. Gundy earned a lot of respect from me as a result of this outburst, I like to see coaches come and fight for their players, it shows that he's dedicated to the team beyond the "I am here because I am paid."

Do I see this ending well? Nope, I think the media will begin to scrutinize his every action. For now, at least, he has shown he's a coach that is going to protect his kids.

Good luck Gundy.

Dennis Dodd writing about professional journalism...sheesh, talk about someone unqualified for the task.

I think he must have the hots for Jenni:

In other news - Gundy at the Big 12 Teleconference says "I wish I had said more"

By John Helsley
Staff Writer
Mike Gundy offered no regrets Monday for his Saturday night outburst, other than to say he wishes he would have taken it further.

Gundy, defiant at times during the weekly Big 12 coaches teleconference, fielded several questions from reporters concerning his postgame response to a Saturday column by The Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson detailing the reasons quarterback Bobby Reid may have lost his job. "Wish I would have said more,” Gundy said. "Tired of certain people downgrading college athletes who are good people. If you want to comment on his play, comment on his play.

lol...I thought the whole time it was Jenni McCarthy...not Jenni Carlson who caused this firestorm.

I am w/ Coach Gundy on this one.

What's absurd is that the media is filled with people opining upon things they have never actually done. Jenni Carlson, obviously (unless she played under the moniker of Katie Hnida), never played big time D1 college football.

IMHO, it is difficult to have an opinion on something you never actually participated in. I am not saying that Ms. Carlson or any female reporter's comments, columns, etc are baseless, but it is hard to take someone seriously if you know they have never been in your shoes.

Now, of course, there are exceptions to the rule, and there are some journalists who likely didn't have athletic prowess, but are outstanding either for information they provide (John Clayton) or their appearance (Erin Andrews) or both their information and appearance (hmmm...I am sure there is at least one or two out there).

Maybe that's the larger issue...but w/ this issue, clearly Ms Carlson overstepped her bounds - Bobby Reid isn't a true "kid" - I think he is almost 21, but he doesn't deserve an analytical breakdown of how his mom feeding him chicken somehow translates into being benched.

Ok Dennis, you're going to write your opinion because this is America and all that, but whenever someone disagrees with said opinion, you don't want them voicing their opinion of your article in return...Makes perfect sense to me.:shake:

What the fuck is this? Is he threatening his career? What a self-important douchebag...

Guess what douchebag, each and every one of us can call you and your sleazy collegues, a "douchebag" at any moment the mood strikes us, 'because this is America. Free speech and all that. You might not agree, but when you don't, for your career's sake, keep it to yourself', you fucking douchebag...

Unfuckingbelievable...

ESPiN article on the incident, I thought some of the comments on the article were interesting.

ESPN - Okla. State's Gundy stands by postgame rant - College Football

On Sunday, Gundy said he could have handled the situation a little differently.

"If I'd have had to do it again, I would have prepared for it," Gundy told reporters. "I shot from the hip. I would have had a written-out statement and actually covered some things that I probably could have gone into a little more in-depth. But I shot it from the hip. It probably wasn't very well-prepared."

Football Writers Association of America president Mike Griffith issued a statement about the incident.

"I consider Coach Gundy's behavior completely inappropriate. It shows a lack of respect for the media and doesn't speak well for the university and the fans that he represents. Coach Gundy's actions have brought national attention and further scrutiny to the situation that could have been handled in a more private and appropriate matter."

Just watched Gundy's press conference for myself. BRAVO to Mike Gundy. Naturally, Dennis Dodd and Mike Griffith seem to think the First Amendment protects journalists from criticism. Is it any wonder nobody really trusts the media? What hypocritical arrogance.

College football needs more Mike Gundys and fewer Nick Sabans.

Seems like in the last few years the media has gotten a way overinflated sense of self worth. I could really go without ever reading another column written by 99% of the hacks out there. So Dodd lobs a thinly veiled threat that if Gundy keeps it up, his career is in jeopardy? Again, does he think some hack at the Daily Oklahomo, or CBS Sportsline, is all that important? I wish more coaches would follow Gundy's lead. All these media types love to criticize the job performance of others, but how dare anybody turn it around and do the same to them.

I don't know if it's jus me but can someone sum up what that article is saying about this kid? From what I gather A) his mom still feeds him chicken and B) Reid's complaining and wants everything handed to him instead of worked for

Over-all I don't think it bashed the kid all that bad?? I'm glad Gundy stood up for his players but I think he was out of line. Whatever she wrote or writes should never warrent something like that. If he wanted payback on her he got payback and THEN some with that. I feel bad for the writer haha

From the previously posted quote from Football Writers Association of America president Mike Griffith:

I consider Coach Gundy's behavior completely inappropriate

I'm sure you do, because...

It shows a lack of respect for the media

But you know what Mikey? The rest of America considers "a lack of respect for the media" to be the most appropriate attitude one can have. The members of your profession have earned it collectively, and little Jenni earned this little tirade personally. Deal with it.

WTF? A more "private and appropriate manner"? Like the private manner of this douchebagette's column? Each and every one of these media idiots who think that they don't deserve to get an ass chewin' for some of the garbage they write can go fuck themselves, twice. Journalism used to be an admired profession. Now, as CleveBucks said so well, they are nothing but a bunch of self-important assholes. You want to inflame people's passions with the garbage you write?, you better be prepared to have some of that emotion pointed directly at you. And I'm not going to sit here and accept the whole "Poor woman. She is so helpless. Why is the big meanie yelling at her?"...Fuck that. Stick it in sideways honey...
