Mike Dontonio (get off my lawn!!!)

Maybe that's one of the reasons they are at that caliber.
There were quite a few successful Patriot offensive coordinators who dropped off a cliff as head coaches all in a row.

As I recall most of them cut their teeth and rose to the top of the profession in the years prior to the team getting busted for stealing signals from defenses. Funny how that worked.

Neither was Matt Wilhelm, who some tend to overlook as one of the great Buckeye LBs.

not the thread for it but they overlook him as an all time great because he wasn't one

Wilhelm was a fantastic player and a National Champion. Love the dude forever but he simply was not at the same level as the Gradishar, Cousineau, Marek, Spielman, and others I'm probably doing a disservice to here.....no shame in that

Overall, no doubt true over the course of his entire OSU career. But IMO for the 2002 season he was both at the level of those others and the leader, heart and soul, and tone-setting vicious edge of an all-time OSU defense. And he was consensus 1st Team All-American that year. FWIW, he also left OSU as sixth all time at OSU in TFLs (don't know who might have surpassed him since).

Anyway, the point isn't to quibble about the relative greatness of the individuals in OSU's embarrassment of riches at the LB position, but just to say that I think people tend to forget about Wilhelm . . . and that they shouldn't.
