Mario M. is player with big-play gift

The former Warren Harding standout has burned some top teams.
McCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS
SOUTH BEND, Ind. ? In one calendar year, Mario Manningham has already built a strong Michigan career.
The Warren Harding High graduate's first touchdown came against Notre Dame last year, his most famous touchdown beat Penn State on the final play of the game and on Saturday against the Irish, he proved he is clearly Michigan's No. 1 receiver with 137 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
"I think the sky's the limit for him," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said of the sophomore receiver.
"He's a guy that, because a year ago he made some plays, but he is a much bigger, stronger, faster guy. He has bought into the work ethic that it takes to become an outstanding player."
Last year
Even though Manningham scored six touchdowns last season, he spent most of it in Jason Avant's shadow.
He made big plays but, as a freshman, was often the third or fourth target.
"When he came in the game, teams knew we were throwing the ball because he didn't come in for run plays," U-M running back Mike Hart said.

"Because he was a little guy. But he was still scoring last year. That's when I knew he was going to be a great player."
Manningham has gotten bigger (he's now 6-feet, 182 pounds) and more knowledgeable.
Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord said Manningham used double moves on Saturday, where he pretended to go one way and then went the other.
Manningham flew down the right sideline for a 69-yard first-quarter touchdown bomb, proving he can be U-M's deep threat.
"I gave a little [quick] pump, he broke for the ball, so I just turned up," Manningham said, referring to the defensive back.
"It's how the play was designed."
The touchdown made it 13-7 Michigan, but served notice the Wolverines were not simply a running team.
Showed his talent
"All spring and summer we were practicing the deep ball and one-on-one routes and today he showed his talent," U-M quarterback Chad Henne said.
"You can't match up with him one-on-one because he is too fast."
Only a sophomore, Manningham already looks like Michigan's next great receiver. He now has four touchdowns for the season and has caught them in a variety of ways.
" I don't care how many catches, how many times I drop the ball, whatever happens, I just want to win," Manningham said.

He's a great player. Lloyd is such a tool for not making him the focus of their passing game. Good for us.

I remember his senior year when he ate up Jamario Oneal.

He also did a good number on Lawrence Wilson and St V's in hoops.

I was told the announcer at the Harding - Mooney game was giving scores
during the game and refered to scUM as the Michigan Raiders.:roll1:
