To be fair, it hasn't been quite that long, they won the AP title in 1948.

After the 1947 season, they campaigned to get an unofficial poll taken after the Rose Bowl, since they kicked USC's ass in it 49-0.

edit - In 1985, they finished #2, but never had a shot at #1. They had a loss and a tie, and were #5 heading into the bowls, before #3 Oklahoma downed #1 Penn State to win the NC, when #2 Miami also lost their bowl.

Jeez, don't you remember? With the Bucks down 21-12 in the 4th, Crable chased down Troy on a 3rd and ten scramble. Of course, he caught him 12-13 yards downfield. But, he showed tremendous closing speed on the play. Just to get the thread back on track to Burgess, soon thereafter, he allows Holmes inside, Troy whistles one right past him, and Holmes dives into the endzone. But, hey, we go game by game, too.
