Mich St 30 at Notre Ame 33 (final)

Michigan State going for seventh consecutive victory in South Bend

Michigan State is the only team to own a six-game winning streak at Notre Dame. The Spartans will try for a seventh consecutive victory in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday (2:30 p.m., Ch. 5, 890-AM), and Irish coach Charlie Weis will make sure his team is aware of it. ''What I need to do is use this as a point of emphasis for this week to get them focused to the matter at hand,'' Weis said. ''You always look for the things each week, from mistakes [to] the positives from the previous week, but there's always a couple of trigger points in each week. ''This week, you can say, 'Michigan State, they just lost to Central Michigan on the last play of the game. So they are going to be down.' The other way is if they came in six times in a row, why would they not expect to win this time? So it's been a very easy teaching tool.''

I don't think Sparty has a chance in this one. I don't think they're as good as their hype. The Central game was an upset but not of the earthshattering variety like when Perles's teams lost two in a row to them; CMU had easily the best quarterback and receiver on the field for one thing.

But if Weis loses this it'll be the most damning loss of his tenure. Dantonio is pure Lloyd in one respect: he doesn't have wrinkles in his offense. He just pounds the ball ahead and expects his team to out execute. Not the schematic advantage sort. If Notre Dame loses on their turf it'll mean one of two things, or both: Weis's so-called recruiting genius is bullshit because he can't put enough talent on the field, or his so-called coaching advantage is bullshit because he can't beat a team that throws rock nineteen out of twenty plays. I think the Domers are going to demolish Sparty, but if they lose, it'll be the final blow that exposes Weis for all-time as a huge crock. Last shred of credibility would be out the window.
