Miami (FL) Hurricanes (1926-2003)

"We are going to use this joint investigation to discover any weaknesses in our own compliance process...."

WTF?!? They have a compliance process?!?

http://www.miami.edu/index.php/ncaa_investigation

Well, to be fair now, they did have a process in place that they used in earnest. It just turns out that the "turn your head and look the other way while a check for the university enters my hand" process they have been using for years seems to go against NCAA bylaws.

Jacory Harris may have accepted benefits from Nevin Shapiro, but since the Miami QB is more widely known by the name Jacorky, nobody has linked the two. A routine misunderstanding. Happens all the time ...

I'm sure we all see the irony in all of this...

So, the university that has the largest compliance department in the land.....had to

  • fire its hall of fame coach after a firestorm of media scrutiny from TexPN.....
  • Get harassed so much by TexPN it's like they have to file a restraining order
  • Get SUED by TexPN for wanting to know who's doing what.....
Over.....tats?!? And THESE mofos down in Miami:

  • Frequented Strip Clubs
  • Were frequented by 'ladies of the night'
  • Paid for at least ONE abortion
And we're even TALKING bout re-instatement of the players involved?!?

If I were you guys, I'd get torches, form a lynch mob, and march to NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis to 'straighten this out'. If they let those guys play for crap like that, and your guys are gone five freaking games and you're out a QB and a head coach.....just doesn't seem quite....fair.

We're waiting because in this economy it's best to combine trips to save gas.

You mean, after all of this, you think the NCAA is going to treat you.....fairly?!?

:shake:

Expect to NOT be making plans to go to the CCG the week of the 10th, which I believe is your bye week. Not wishing anything on you guys, but it seems that TexPN and the NCAA loves to use your school as a speed bag.

I've seen nothing so far that I could say was evidence of the NCAA treating tOSU "unfairly". ESPN? Different universe entirely. But given the big talk about enhanced NCAA punishment, nothing about UT or Pearl's recent ruling shows that they really mean it. If anything, Miami has given them the "example" dog they need to publicly kick - one that comes without the factual deficits or PR firestorm of thumping the Buckeyes.

The NCAA has stated that they don't use previous rulings as precedent for current or future rulings (no link). My understanding of that is that they are never "fair".

But I agree with Gator. (CRAP!!) I don't think the NCAA has been unreasonable with regards to Ohio State.

In the future they're going to hire ex MMA fighters to head up the compliance department for the next time a booster gets froggy.

And now the bankruptcy court is involved:

Report: Players Accused By Shapiro To Get Subpoenas

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) ? While the University of Miami is trying to turn its attention to next Monday?s game at Maryland; the current and former players named in the Nevin Shapiro scandal will soon be receiving subpoenas.

According to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald, the attorney for Shapiro bankruptcy trustee Joel Tabas will be issuing subpoenas to the 72 players named by Shapiro as having received cash, gifts, meals, or other benefits from Shapiro.

?They can?t ignore it ? it?s a subpoena issued by a bankruptcy court,? Gary Freedman told the Herald. ?If they ignore it, we will seek an order from the court to compel them to respond.?

According to the Herald, if the subpoena is ignored, the bankruptcy judge can financially penalize or have the person brought into court by force. Freedman told the Herald he doesn?t expect the judge to take someone into custody.

Freedman said the players will first receive a letter explaining the situation and a subpoena requesting documentation of any gifts or benefits they received. He told the Herald that the bankruptcy trustee can request athletes give depositions and can file lawsuits against them.

Freedman told the Herald that none of the 72 players alleged to have received improper benefits have contacted him to return any money.

?Our records reflect what Shapiro has indicated to Yahoo! I have no reason to doubt what Nevin has been saying,? Freedman said, ?We have done our due diligence.?

Former Hurricane, and current New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork was alleged to have received two $50,000 Cadillac Escalades. Freedman said ?there is authority to the claim on Vince Wilfork.?
