Men's Basketball Tidbits 2008-'09 Season

Matta's comments from Big 10 media day

Men's Basketball: Big Ten Preseason Honors Announced - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Audio:
- we?re excited as we begin another season. I think that the thing that I enjoy right now is we?ve got a lot of unknowns about this basketball team, with no seniors and David Lighty as the only junior that has been in the program for three years, it makes a challenge. I think one of the great things that I love right now from a coaching perspective is, if we practice for 2 and a half hours, it is 2 and a half hours of intense coaching, teaching, and to these guys? credit, I think that they want to learn, they want to be better and a tight group, and hopefully in time we?ll keep putting the pieces of the puzzle together and have a heck of a basketball team.
- I think that every individual is different, as a young man coming into college: some adapt quicker, some it takes sometimes a year, two years to get fully acclimated to what they?re going to go through, and I think that?s been one of the things we?ve tried to really put an emphasis on with our younger guys, is trying to get ?em tougher, trying to get ?em to understand our system, how we want to play, terminology, and with what we?ve done thus far in the season, we haven?t put a lot in, we?re more about trying to demand a certain level of play with the things that we?re doing and teaching, and I think that both David and Evan, being in the program for one year and two years, we?re looking heavily towards those guys to show them the ropes and knowing there?s peaks and valleys of a college basketball season and these guys gotta be there and be strong to pull them out of it.
- no question [Illinois won?t stay ?down? for long] ? Bruce?s obviously done a tremendous job in his time as a head coach ? it?s funny in coaching, a lot of times things happen quickly on you, and a lot of times they?re out of your control. Staying focused in what you have to do and what?s right for your university and what?s right for your coaching philosophy, so no, I don?t view Illinois as being ?in the valleys,? as you put it - not me, very long.
- Absolutely [talent in the bottom 7/8 is catching up with the top 3 in the conference]. Deservingly so with Purdue, Michigan State, Wisconsin [picked in the top 3] on paper with what they have coming back and what those guys have shown and proven, they?re very deserving of where they are right now and I think you?re exactly right with the remaining teams, I think there?s a lot that can be accomplished by any of those teams and I?ve said this, every year that I?ve been in the Big 10, there?s been a team that wasn?t supposed to be where they ended up, in a good way and I think that?s something that I view for our team to keep an eye on of three years ago being picked 8th in the Big 10 and winning it, I think that?s got to be our focus and knowing that experience helps in college basketball, but there are avenues, there?s ways that you can overcome that.

On the team having an appreciation for the success of past teams?
?I think they do. But I think the hard part for this team is that we played for a national championship two years ago, but we only have one guy left from that team. So most of these other guys just don?t know. Trying to reminisce about what that run was like, there?s only one guy that knows what you?re talking about.?

On the media guide not having any players on it?
?I?ve always wanted this, everywhere I?ve ever been. With no seniors on the team ? Ohio State usually puts seniors on the media guide ? but we don?t have any. I think this says that it?s more about Ohio State, and I love it.?

On managing expectations with a young team:
?I think that, for us, with all the departures that we?ve had, it?s been more of an identity crisis, a feeling of ?Who are we?? because everybody?s gone. And with our new guys, I think they?re kind of looking around thinking, ?I have to be spectacular.? So, I think it?s more that than actual expectations.?

On Ohio State?s scoring options this year:
?Hopefully somebody will emerge as a consistent scorer, but I think, as I look at this team - I told them the other day, the first team I coached never had the same leading scorer two games in a row for thirty-two games or whatever it was. So, could this team be like that? I hope so. I hope that we can score from a lot of different angles. I like it when a team has a lot of guys that can score. You look at Florida, the team that beat us a few years ago, and they had guys with 13, 12, 12. And you look at Kansas last year, and they were the exact same way ? just a lot of different guys and ways to score.?

On coaching a young team:
?It?s challenging. You know you start out in the spring and summer saying, ?We?ve got these guys coming back, and we know we can do this.? But you know, this year?s team, we came into the season saying, ?Well, who can do what?? And we?ve been that way really the last three years. But the thing that I enjoy about it as a coach is that we practice for two and a half hours and it is intense, I mean non-stop. So, it keeps us on our toes.?

Matta, Buckeyes searching for right point man.....................Crater, Simmons, Offutt and Hill are competing for the job. Matta comments it may take some time to determine who will get the most minutes at point guard. Simmons is described as a scorer while Crater is described as a "distributer"......

Note: IMO.......the key to the season is this issue....who steps up at point guard with consistent play..........

Really have to agree with that because we are settled on the wing players and it is sounding like if BJ struggles early Dallas is really starting to make strides so all the positions are really covered except for PG.

Who's the best athlete out of the PG group?
I know you're going to find this hard to believe but without seeing any of them in person I really could not say but I think would have to be either Crater or Simmons but they bring different things to the table where forgets to their basketball play and you are asking for the better athlete which I cannot answer:! Paging 40 or junkie or the man from BN:)

Crater is definitely more athletic than Simmons. Hill is a good athlete, but I don't expect him to break the rotation.

On one play in Saturday's scrimmage, Crater jumped quickly to bat a pass that Offutt threw in the air (Offutt was only a few feet from AC when he threw the pass), retrieved the ball and raced to the other end for a two-handed dunk. Crater has break-away speed and is very quick with the ball.

I'm not sure if Simmons can dunk, but he didn't look very explosive trying to lay the ball in on the fast break. Simmons is definitely not as fast as Crater.

Most are reporting that Offutt has been playing 2G primarily. It looks like it may boil down to a two horse race between the scorer/shooter Simmons and the passer/distributor Crater. Maybe they'll start out 20 min each and if one stands out they'll move it to 25-15 eventually.
