Men's Basketball Tidbits 2008-'09 Season

Ma I really hope that Jon can turn his game up, and hit the open shots when they come open...

You guys remember me telling you that Butler always shot the ball better off the dribble because that was what he always did and was always used too...

Lets hope that Diebler can work out the kinks and hit the shots this year...

BTW for a heads up Dallas will be fine and will be playing in the regular season opener...

Buckeyes Hope Off-Season Together Prevents Chemistry Problems that Existed Last Season

By John Porentas
The 2008-09 Buckeyes will be big, athletic and skilled. Whether or not they will be a team, a unit that can play together to win games is another story.
Last year's Buckeye team was big, athletic and skilled, but didn't win enough to be a factor in the Big Ten conference race to make the NCAA tournament field. They were at times a collection of individual parts that never really meshed until very late in the season when they made a very nice run in the NIT tournament. No one every said it, but at times it was clear that team had some chemistry issues.

I can envision where chemistry could become a problem with turnovers every year so I hope that the coaches can address that better than last year along with each year to come.

The poll is a fun thing, thanks for having it.

Men's basketball: Buckeyes learn to give small schools more respect
Loss to Findlay lingers as NAIA Walsh visits

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A year ago, Evan Turner had no idea about the University of Findlay, no appreciation for how good a basketball program it has. "I just thought it was going to be a tune-up for the season," he said. "I had no clue. I really had no clue at all."
One year later, a half dozen of his teammates on the Ohio State men's basketball team have no clue. No clue at all.
"You think of Walsh (University), and most of them have probably never heard of them before," junior David Lighty said. "That's something we're working on right now, just trying to make sure that everyone knows that every game is a big game."
Another young Ohio State team plays its one and only exhibition tonight, against Walsh in Value City Arena.
Walsh, which is in North Canton, is a member of NAIA Division II, won a national championship three years ago, and has been among the last 16 standing the past three seasons.

Looking waaaaay ahead
I know the Buckeyes haven?t even tipped off their exhibition game yet (eight hours and counting), but Joe Lunardi has a new Bracketology up on ESPN.com and has them making the NCAA Tournement. Barely.

Without having seen a dribble, Lunardi projects them as a No.10 seed and playing Xavier in the first round, ha, ha). They?re not one of the last four in, but they?re close.

And that, roughly, conforms to how I see them faring _ an observation I?ll expand on in the paper next week when our preseason basketball section is published on Wednesday. Find Keys to the Season and skip to the final note if you want to dispense with the prose and get straight to the bottom line.

Lunardi has only four Big Ten teams making the field, a projection shared by many. He has Wisconsin as a No.2 seed, Michigan State as a 3 and Purdue as a 4.

I know that Joe Lunardi is the bracketolgist guru for ESPN but I think it is even a little early for him to predict this. That is just insane:(

I agree that its extremely early to be making predictions like that, especially for a young team that hasn't played a game yet. I'm not disagreeing with Lunardi, but I think our buckeyes have a chance to be very underrated. I don't think the pg will be that much of a question this year, I think between Crater and Simmons, you have two very capable players at that position, each with their own different skill set. The difference between fighting to get in the tourney this year and fighting to get to the sweet 16 or elite 8, I believe, is going to be decided by the play of JD and BJ. If Diebler can average around 12ppg and be a consistent three point threat, and BJ commits to defense and plays to his pontential every game, I think that we'll be able to surprise a few good teams this year.

I don't see it as much of a slight right now. A 10-seed would rank OSU 37th-40th right now, with quite a few questions still to be answered regarding the performance of the freshmen and point guards. That seems reasonable to me.

Most preseason polls have them ranked right outside the top 25. I am not that worried about Mullens even if he is a freshman and I think Dallas will help while more this season than most outsiders think. I will agree that the PG position is suspect but I think that by the time the Big 10 season rolls around we will be okay at that position.
