Thad Matta's club had a productive week in beating two top-25 teams.

Last week: Won at Miami 73-68 (ACC/Big Ten Challenge); beat Notre Dame 67-62 (Indianapolis)

The Buckeyes caught two breaks this week when they played at Miami in a game in which Jack McClinton was tossed midway through the first half for a flagrant foul. The Buckeyes still had to mount a comeback and won the game by five. Then, with Notre Dame's Luke Harangody coming back from pneumonia, the Buckeyes still had to beat the Irish in Indianapolis. They did that, too, winning by five.

Not a bad article but to bad he had to with
caught two breaks this week
:( I guess how did he know that the guy from Miami would have won the game for his team. I mean there were other guys that did score points while JM was not playing. Also, Andy really needs to look at the stats from the Notre Dame game to see what LH had coming back from "pneumonia".

Just a small item I noticed is that we are shooting free throws a lot better than in prior years, unless I am mistaken. The Buckeyes are mostly hitting them very well.
Turner 88.5
Diebler 80.0
Lauderdale 50.0
Lighty 56.3
Simmons 77.8
Buford 88.3
Mullens 68.8
Crater 100
Madsen 75.0
And keep in mind, up until recently, Mullens has been lights out (for a big man) from the charity stripe. Not sure what's been going on with him lately. Not used to the rims on the road? Pressure?

Who would have thought we would have won either ONE of those games after watching us struggle against Bowling Green? Not me. This team is learning and coming together VERY fast. There's a lot to be excited about with this group.

Here's to hoping they can play like this on a consistent basis this year!

OSU men's basketball: Turnaround on boards
Buckeyes step up rebounding efforts after win at Miami
Thursday, December 11, 2008 3:13 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

There was a lid on the Ohio State basket last week. Not the one that kept nearly 60 percent of the Buckeyes' shots from touching net against the University of Miami and Notre Dame. Rather, the plastic bubble that was affixed to the top of a rim in practice between those games so that the men had no choice but to do what they failed to in the first of those games -- rebound.
"Thirty minutes at a time," freshman center B.J. Mullens said, "and we just battle. I'm talking blood, head-busting, nose-hitting."
It knocked something into them.
Ohio State, which upset Miami on Dec. 2 despite allowing the Hurricanes 19 offensive rebounds and 24 second-chance points, limited Notre Dame to nine and seven, respectively, in defeating the then-No. 7 Irish on Saturday in Indianapolis.
The Buckeyes also took more advantage of their own second chances, turning six offensive rebounds into 10 points in a second-half stretch in which they increased their lead to seven points from three.
Ohio State finished with a 43-36 advantage on the boards after being outrebounded by 15 at Miami.
"It was huge," coach Thad Matta said of his team's rebounding in the second half. "The one thing we talked about with them was (Notre Dame is) a team that switches a lot on screens and there were going to be opportunities to offensive rebound just through the switching. I think Evan and Dallas did a really good job, B.J. did a great job, of trying to exploit that. It was good to see them going."

Simmons gets another ring; Grycko walks off

Before tonight?s game tipped off, point guard Jeremie Simmons was presented his ring for being part of the Mott Community College team that won the Division II national junior college championship last season. Other members of the team received their rings tonight at Mott, which is located in Flint, Mich.
Simmons was named player of the year in Division II last season. He also earned a ring as a freshman at Mott, which won the national title that season, too.
Meanwhile, J.J. Grycko, a 6-foot-9 freshman from Cincinnati Moeller who joined the team this fall as a walk-on, was not on the bench for the game.
?He decided to go home? earlier this week, coach Thad Matta said after the game. Matta said Grycko did not tell him why he was leaving.

Notes , Wiscy beat Texas tonight , giving them 3 losses I believe and It look's like Illinois will beat Mizzou they are up 18 with just a couple minutes to go.

Butler just won on the road at Xavier. Makes our victory and opponents' strength of schedule look better.

just heard on B10 tonight that the Buckeyes have the longest winning streak in the country. 14 games

Hell yeah. That was a 2-horse race between us and Kansas coming in to the season, and Kansas lost way back in November. :)
