i found this article interesting for at least few reasons. one, matta never offered wilson (as far as we know, he also wasn't looking to), so how could ryan have stolen a recruit from our coach? two, it is a bit of a stretch to infer that signing wilson establishes a "road into ohio talent." three, wisconsin will have to do much more to overtake indiana or even michigan state as ohio state's big ten rival. i guess the mere fact that fans are hoping to make ohio state its rival means that ohio state is big time. The recent announcement by Ohio prep star Charles Wilson that he intends to commit to Wisconsin during this fall's early signing period was a huge win for the Badger program.
...
In another way, however, Wilson's commitment is much more meaningful. It shows that even in the face of a scholarship offer from one of the nation's pre-eminent programs, the UW program and its coaches held up.
Also, and in my opinion most importantly, Wisconsin went into a fellow Big Ten power's backyard and stole a rising talent out from under the noses of Thad Matta and Ohio State - a recruiting blow in a league where protecting one's own turf is essential.
With Tubby Smith taking over at Minnesota, recruiting in that state - a recent hotbed for UW recruiting - will likely become much more difficult, so it is essential for Ryan's staff to diversify its recruiting area. If UW is able to establish a road into Ohio talent, it could be a big blow in what could end up being a major rivalry in the Big Ten for the coming years.
Coming off a season in which the UW and OSU played two absolutely classic games, one of which was a historic one-on-one matchup, and were among the nation's elite all season, the two teams are in position to establish a long-term rivalry.

5. Ohio State
Because Ohio State is widely regarded as a football school, there is a certain lack of appreciation for the Buckeyes' hardwood exploits, even though this has been a very successful program for large portions of the last five decades. Now? In three short years, Thad Matta has built Ohio State into an elite hoops program. The Thad Five panned out and took the Buckeyes to the national title game, and now -- even though Greg Oden's gone and Mike Conley Jr. very well might be, too -- there's plenty of talent left from last season's roster and more stud freshmen are arriving in Columbus for next season. Throw in the new Value City Arena and a huge athletics budget, and the foundation is there for a very long stay in the sport's upper crust.

OSU men's basketball: Peters has new duties on Matta's staff
Saturday, May 19, 2007 7:05 AM
The vacant video coordinator's position on the Ohio State men's basketball staff has become a vacant assistant coaching position.
Coach Thad Matta announced in a statement last night that assistant coach Dan Peters will move into a newly created job as associate director of basketball operations. Peters will assist operations director Dave Egelhoff, who will add the video coordinator duties vacated when Brandon Miller left after the season to take an assistant coaching job at Butler.

I project:
PG: Jamar Butler
SG: Jon Diebler
SF: David Lighty
PF: Othello Hunter
C: Kosta Koufos
A talented starting 5, but it is a bit of a dropoff from last season. There really isn't much leadership in the 5 and there is a significant decrease in talent at the C and PG spot from Oden and Conley. I think the Butler will have a big impact on how well the team does next season because he is the team's only true guard and he's a senior. Let me know what you all think!
I would not count Turner out when you start talking about a starting 5. He probably is better ball handler then Diebler. I also think that Jon might play some SF with Lightly sliding down to the 4 position. That would be a pretty potent offensive team but it might lack in the rebounding area. However do not forget TurnerTGfan06;850261; said:That is how I see it right now. I hope diebler can develop into a solid second option for butler. I do love the depth this year much more than last year, mostly inside though.
I look for Lighty to be the best player by far on this team. Tremendous finish to the season that I hope leads to a breakout season.
