Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2007-08 Season

4 - Koufos, Hunter, Madsen
5 - Oden, Terwilliger, Lauderdale

Speed lineup - Conley, Butler, Cook, Lighty, Koufos.

I think Madsen may fill in at the 5. If that happens, where will Dallas get his minutes?

I certainly have no problems with those edits - just want to get the guys back next year.

I don't care if Greg wants to prove he's a 3-point shooter and Conley decides to only back people down Mark Jackson style (complete with the nasty man-boob shake and the weird arm sign of the cross thing). Just bring the boys BACK FOR MORE!

edit: you have to admit, a big lineup with 3-KK, 4-Hunter and 5-Oden would be awesome to watch

If Oden and Conley both stay, there's no doubt we start the season as the consensus #1 team. If Oden bolts and Conley stays, then pre-season top-5 for sure. Even if both bail, we'll have the talent to make a serious run at another outright conference title and deep run in the NCAAs.

Regardless, it's going to be quite the chore to replicate this 35-4 season...it's disappointing not to win the national title, but this season has still been phenomenal.

Dang I'm already excited about basketball season next year! How about Big 10 basketball in general next year? Per Scout.com, 5 Big 10 teams ranked in the top 25 for the 2007 recruiting class, including 4 teams with top 10 recruiting classes: IU, Purdue, OSU, MSU. Also looking like the B10 is the coaching all-star league. This league is gonna be wicked competitive. Can you say 3/4 teams in the Final Four in future years coming from the Big 10??

I will have the big ten preview up in a couple days...I am working on it right now, just gathering data...

But I agree next year, is going to be competitive in the Big Ten with lots of new faces(coaches and players)...
I'm nervous to type this, but I can see why Oden would stay. It's been well-documented how much success he and Conley have had together, both at the HS and AAU levels. Moreso than just losing, it had to burn Oden to see a bunch of guys he just dominated getting to repeat as champions. I feel like - given all the other stuff already said about Oden: good student, loves college, best friends staying - he might stick around just to have that feeling that he had to witness last night. I know it would motivate me.

IF Oden stays 1 more year (or more????) the Buckeyes have the chance to be an historic team. I know that phrase has been used very liberally in the last few weeks, but it's true. Imagine the following lineup:

PG Conley
SG Butler/Cook
SF Lighty/Cook/Koufos
PF Hunter/Koufos/
C Oden/Madsen

6th Cook/Koufos/Diebler/Twigs/Madsen/Turner/Wallace/Lauderdale

That's a ridiculous team from top to bottom (not worth highlighting the 2008 guys here, but they're an even better class than 2007). Who beats them? Obviously its college hoops and anything can happen, but can you point out any team in the nation that you feel has a match up advantage?

If you're Oden/Conley/Cook and you've met the incoming '07s and 08's, and know how good they are, doesn't it make you excited? Won't it feel good to show up to gyms and scare the bejeezus out of every other team?

Of course the NBA is hard to pass up, but college is really really really fun (and I went to a boring school). Winning is really really really fun too. They could have both for another year(s).

The NBA will still be there - and who knows, maybe the rookie minimum will increase or the number of years in a rookie salary will decrease - Oden will always be the number 1 (see Tim Duncan) and Conley and Cook will only improve their draft stock. Staaaay! (please?)
I agree with you. About your question that I bolded, I heard that Oden was bowing down to Jon Diebler after the second Wisconsin game. I've also read in articles that Bj Mullens keeps in contact with Oden and is looking forward to learning from him.

Greg has already shown, from yesterday's game, that he can be unstopable. What's sad for opponents is that his offensive game is becoming silly. When you have guards and other talented bigs along with you good things will happen. I've always said that I think the team can go undefeated next year if Cook, Oden and Conley return. This will be an intresting month to see who leaves or stays.

Quote: I am also in the minority in that I do not see Oden leaving.

Reply: It is truly 50/50, but when your stock can't go any higher, even tho you still have stuff to work on, how do you say no?

I would say that the odds of Greg Oden going pro are more like $20,000,000 to 1.

do you guys really think diebler can defend the 2?

He is going to have to at times, maybe not his first year, but on into his career...

Is there something I am missing in why he can't guard the 2? Maybe a quick little athletic 2, but a guy like that he would have the advantage on the other end, so you might say can they guard him?

I don't know if this question matters: If he's on the court with one of the 1s (Conley/Butler/Crater) and one of the other swingmen (Cook/Lighty/Turner/Buford) I think the matchups with the opposing 1-3s will work itself out. I also think that because of his shooting acumen, Diebler loses alot of credit for being a good athlete. Plus, he's tall. He's probably one of those guys (like Butler and Cook) who wasn't asked to play that much defense in HS in order to preserve energy for the offensive end. IMO he'll be fine.

OHIO STATE Men's basketball
5 questions for next season

Wednesday, April 4, 2007 3:36 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Through the dark clouds of an NCAA investigation, rays of a brighter future for the Ohio State men's basketball program began peeking through two years ago, one after another.

First, Matt Sylvester hit the shot that spoiled Illinois' unbeaten season and put a smiling face on an otherwise dreary season in which the Buckeyes were banned from the NCAA Tournament despite winning 20 games.
Then, high school All-American Daequan Cook, who was sitting behind the bench when Sylvester's three snapped the net, committed to OSU in 2006.
In short order, he was joined by David Lighty, another well-regarded recruit, and by his AAU teammates, Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., the yin and yang of perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime recruiting class for coach Thad Matta.

Continued....
