OHIO STATE MEN?S BASKETBALL
Buckeyes need to foster more leadership

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Bust somebody upside the head?
That?s what coach Thad Matta said Je?Kel Foster would have done had he been on the court when the Ohio State men?s basketball team was unraveling in the second half at Penn State.
Jamar Butler smiled when he heard it.
"Somebody would have had stitches, I guarantee that," said Butler, Foster?s running mate at guard the past two seasons. Matta mentioned Foster ? "Coach Matta talks a lot about Je?Kel," freshman Daequan Cook said ? as if wishing he had someone like him on this team, an upperclassman with the chutzpah to snatch wayward teammates and shake them back to their senses when they are, as they were Wednesday, in the process of losing a 24-point lead in the second half.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MINNEAPOLIS ? Will playing like a No. 2-ranked team is expected to play get the Ohio State men?s basketball team the respect it needs to be No. 1?
"Hopefully," guard Ron Lewis said.
Top-ranked Florida?s loss at Vanderbilt on Saturday opened the door for the Buckeyes to move up in the polls if they did their part yesterday. They did, beating Minnesota 85-67 in Williams Arena for their 11 th consecutive victory.

Buckeyes lay claim to No. 1 ranking

Oden collects 19 points and nine rebounds as OSU clobbers Minnesota for 11th straight victory.

By Jon Krawczynski

MINNEAPOLIS ? The last time Ohio State was No. 1 in the AP men's basketball poll, John Havlicek, Jerry Lucas and a sub named Bob Knight were leading the Buckeyes to the NCAA championship game.
That was 45 years ago, but after Greg Oden and No. 2 Ohio State breezed to an 85-67 victory over Minnesota on Sunday, Hondo and the General might finally have some company.

Lewis loses start but not focus

Senior goes for 16, OSU beats Gophers
Monday, February 19, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Minneapolis- Ron Lewis lost his starting job in practice this week. Sunday, Ohio State's senior swingman and his men's basketball team played as well as they have in a month. That wasn't a coincidence.
Following Saturday's loss by No. 1 Florida, the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes should ascend to the top spot in the polls this week, and they played like they deserved it in an 85-67 win at Minnesota. They played that way because they practiced that way, with coach Thad Matta recently implementing a new reward system: starting jobs are earned in practice.

Thad Matta said not many days go by when he doesn?t think of the day he was introduced as coach of the Ohio State men?s basketball team and the meeting with players that preceded the news conference. "The look in that room ? I didn?t sleep real well that night," Matta said yesterday. "It was a group of guys that had been beaten down. They had a look of questioning in their eyes. Number Who are you?? And number two, ?I know you?re saying this is what we?re going to try to do, but how?? "

Buckeyes clutch ... and ambidextrous

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Tuesday, February 27, 2007
A big reason the Ohio State basketball team won a second straight Big Ten trophy and is the consensus No. 1 for the first time since 1962 is the Buckeyes' late-game execution.
OSU is 4-1 in games decided by three or fewer points. The one loss (72-69) came at Wisconsin. But the Buckeyes poise ? and Wisconsin's meltdown ? in the final three minutes and 30 seconds Sunday helped OSU avenge that loss.

Tressel's talk helped spur Ohio State hoops

By Marlen Garcia, USA TODAY
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A turning point for the Ohio State men's basketball team came in mid-January after OSU football coach Jim Tressel addressed the team at coach Thad Matta's request.
Tressel led OSU to a Big Ten championship last fall and the Bowl Championship Series title game vs. Florida in January.
"Tressel delivered a heck of a message about everyone staying on the same page," Matta said Monday. "When coach speaks, no eyes come off him."

Buckeyes No.1 in polls, but in NCAA?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

When the subject of whom to seed No. 1 in the NCAA men?s basketball tournament comes up 10 days from now in the Indianapolis hotel room occupied by the tournament selection committee, at least one committee member will have to leave the room.
"They?ll kick me out and I?ll go get ice cream," Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said.
