Ohio State men's basketball
Starts giving Buckeyes fits

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SAN ANTONIO -- A week ago, after the great escape against Xavier, it was suggested that a lot of teams that reach the Final Four overcome that one scare along the road.

But two?
"We're living on the edge," Ohio State forward David Lighty acknowledged yesterday, a little more than 12 hours after the Buckeyes came from 20 points behind Tennessee to win 85-84 in an NCAA South Regional semifinal in the Alamodome. "If you don't come ready to play on any given day, you can get beat.

Neal C. LauronDISPATCH Ohio State center Greg Oden, right, has more appetite for blocking shots than for dormitory food.

Short-attention span synopsis: How many TVs clicked off at halftime? Oden can't keep hands to himself. Ron Lewis goes Kobe on Tennessee. Orange you glad you weren't a Vols fan?
Worth the trip? OSU fans looked like saggy and soggy flotsam along the San Antonio Riverwalk until the Buckeyes became the San Antonio Spurs and turned the party from pooper to super. Tex-Mex for everyone!

OHIO STATE INSIDER
Offense struggles, but never OSU's confidence

Saturday, March 24, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
San Antonio -- If there's such a thing as having too much confidence, Ohio State might have it, and that's what has saved the Buckeyes in their last two games. During the year, they occasionally got in trouble with their lack of conscience with their shooting. Miss? Miss again? Who cares, keep firing, just as Thad Matta preached.
"It can be a problem sometimes," point guard Mike Conley Jr. said Friday. "But at the same time, it's a good thing to have that confidence in our guys. I think having that confidence helps us more than it hurts us."
During the second-half comeback against Tennessee on Thursday, every Buckeye was ready and willing to keep firing without hesitation.

By the numbers
Despite living on the edge, OSU finds a way to prevail

No. 1-ranked Buckeyes aren't blowing many teams out, but they know how to rally and win close contests.

SAN ANTONIO ? Greg Oden didn't know a mulligan from Gilligan's Island.
When he learned it was a do-over off the tee box in golf, the Ohio State center agreed that the Buckeyes have survived their last two NCAA tournament basketball games despite a few hooks and slices.

Buckeyes' bonds run deep during challenging season

It wasn't easy for the talented freshman class to mesh with Ohio State's veterans.

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

Ohio State basketball players only drop hints about this season's challenges.
Freshman point guard Mike Conley Jr., named the NCAA tournament's Most Outstanding Player in the South Regional on Sunday, gave a little more insight.

"It's been real hard," Conley said. "We've been through a lot of ups and downs within the team. And we try to keep a lot of stuff between the team. And we do a good job of that. I think that's what's made us so good so far."

Matta's prediction not far off

Coach knew freshmen could take Buckeyes far

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

SAN ANTONIO - They arrived as the ``Thad Five,'' four freshmen and a junior college transfer, perhaps the most heralded recruiting class in Ohio State basketball history.
But great expectations are one thing, greatness another.
When coach Thad Matta recruited the linchpins of the group rated second in the nation, Indianapolis North High School teammates Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., Matta told Conley that OSU would win a national championship if they both came to Columbus.

Men's Basketball
The-Ozone Note and Quotebook
By John Porentas
The Challenge: By now everybody has heard about Joey Dorsey's pregame comments about Greg Oden, and by now everybody knows how that turned out. In a classic example of the law of unintended consequences, the effect of Dorsey's comments was to fire up the entire OSU team.
"I think it affected us as a team more than just affecting Greg," explained guard Mike Conley.
"Greg doesn't let a lot affect him.
"That was kind of a one-on-one call out.
"We done one-on-one team.
"We try to play team basketball. When somebody talks about Greg, they're talking about all of us," Conley said.
Memphis Head Coach John Calipari tried to spin the situation a little differently after the game, but then sent a not-so-subtle message to Dorsey with is final comment.
"I don't think he called him out. I think what he was saying is 'I'm going against the best there is and I'm going to see what I'm about,"' said Calipari.
"He did."

SAN ANTONIO -- It has been more than six months since the Ohio State men's basketball players reported for preseason conditioning, and coach Thad Matta handed each a manual explaining how they do things in the program, on and off the court, and when they are to do them.

Bob Hunter commentary: It's official -- Ohio State's season is a success

Monday, March 26, 2007 3:31 AM
By bob hunter

SAN ANTONIO -- The Ohio State players would never say this. Neither would their coaches. Or trainers. Or managers. Heck, Memphis motor-mouth Joey Dorsey might not even say it, hard as that is to believe. Somebody should say it, though, because it sums up what OSU's
92-76 win over Memphis means: As of Saturday,
the season is a success.

'Thad Five' has shot to do what 'Fab Five' couldn't

By Jim Morris
Staff Writer

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
The comparisons began more than a year ago, when Ohio State's basketball recruiting class began to take shape. Would the "Thad Five" be the next "Fab Five"?
While nobody connected with Ohio State likes to compare anything it does to something associated with "that school up north," the four freshmen brought in by coach Thad Matta ? Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., Daequan Cook and David Lighty ? plus junior-college transfer Othello Hunter ? instantly conjured up memories of that Michigan class of five freshmen who hit college basketball with an explosion of talent, swagger and victories in 1991.

Buckeyes won only NCAA title in 1960

By the Associated Press

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
Ohio State will be making its seventh trip to the Final Four and has an all-time NCAA men's tournament record of 42-22. The legendary Fred Taylor led OSU to its only national championship. The Buckeyes' Final Four results since 1960, the year they won it all:

Matta knew freshmen made Final Four a possibility

By Stephen Hawkins

Ohio State?s Thad Matta planted the thought of going to the Final Four into freshmen Greg Oden, left, and Mike Conley Jr. back in September.

Before Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. even played a game for Ohio State, they were handed a Final Four pamphlet by their coach.
Six months later, the sensational freshmen ? part of a group known as the ?Thad Five? ? get to see what it?s really all about. The Buckeyes (34-3) will be there to play Georgetown on Saturday.
?That was hopefully great motivation for them,? coach Thad Matta said. ?I?m sure they forgot about it 10 minutes after the meeting, as kids normally do.?
