Double team is effective

Ohio State developed two distinct styles, with Oden and without him, and is better off for it.
By Peter Yoon, Times Staff Writer
March 27, 2007

SAN ANTONIO ? They are different teams, with diverse styles of play and unique strategies.

One has a seven-foot, game-changing center; the other does not. But both are headed to the Final Four.

Ohio State and Georgetown?

No, Ohio State and Ohio State.

The Buckeyes (34-3) have a 21-game win streak as they prepare to take on Georgetown in a national semifinal Saturday in Atlanta, and they have gotten to this point despite the fact ? or, depending how you look at it, because ? center Greg Oden has missed significant playing time with foul trouble in the NCAA tournament.

But chameleon-like adaptability, learned early in the season when Oden sat out while recovering from wrist surgery, allowed the Buckeyes to adjust without panicking. It makes them that much more difficult to defend and attack, and it's a key reason Ohio State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation and is heading to Atlanta.

Ohio State

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

MIKE MUNDEN | DISPATCH Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has been known to show up at a Buckeyes basketball game.

While Jim Tressel has Ohio State spring football fever, he admitted yesterday he's also suffering from an acute case of March Madness. His football Buckeyes open spring drills Thursday afternoon, diving into the work of replacing seven offensive starters from last year's Big Ten championship team, including Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith.
Late Saturday afternoon the basketball Buckeyes play Georgetown in the NCAA Final Four in Atlanta.
"I'm planning on getting there Saturday," Tressel said. "We've got practice in the morning, but I'm going to find a way to get there, even if I have to hitchhike. I can't wait to see the ballgame."

Overheard in Florida

"Now the attitude is like ... 'Whatever. If I miss this championship T-shirt, there will be another one soon.' It's just kind of expected now that we're going to win championships." University of Florida bookstore employee Will Lively, on yesterday's Final Four T-shirt sales.

Alter grad earns job as Oden's 'bodyguard'

Ullmer is one of nine student managers for the Ohio State basketball team, and he sits by the star during interviews.

By Mark Gokavi
Staff Writer

ATLANTA ? Forget Mike Conley Jr. or coach Thad Matta. Matt Ullmer is Greg Oden's right-hand man.
The 2004 Alter High School graduate and college junior is one of nine student managers for the Ohio State men's basketball program. But he (on the right) and Ty Shepfer (on the left) are the "bodyguards" during Oden's interviews.
"We started at the beginning of the NCAA tournament and we were sitting there eating lunch one day," Ullmer said Friday. "Greg is like, 'You'd better stay and sit here during media, because everyone swarms during NCAA,' and it crowds him. He likes to have a little breathing room."

OSU's run returns program to prominence not seen since early '60s

Monday, April 2, 2007 3:28 AM
By todd jones

ATLANTA -- Tonight will be the first time Ohio State has played a basketball game in April.

The Buckeyes have never won as many games in one season as the 35 victories they own. One more, and they will have their first national title in nearly a half-century.
Florida, deep, talented and defending national champion, will have much to say about keeping OSU from becoming immortalized in Ohio -- at least as memorable as a basketball team can be while Ohio State spring football practice is going on.
The Buckeyes probably won't have enough bodies or answers tonight against the Gators in the NCAA championship game. Florida should chomp on OSU, although look for a closer game than the Gators' 26-point regular-season victory.

A BP tidbit regarding this season.

The previous 2 years, there was a request to rearrange the forum listings to display basketball above football after the football season ended, in order to attract more posters to the basketball forum.

That wasn't necessary this season. :wink2:

A SEASON IN REVIEW
Growing as one

An interesting collection of talents last fall, the Buckeyes found maturity just quickly enough to make a run at the NCAA title
Wednesday, April 04, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Atlanta - The freshmen were muted by coach's decree - you play before you speak.
So as the five new Buckeyes silently posed this way and that on photo day nearly six months ago, separated from their four veteran teammates by hype (obvious) and talent level (unspoken), Ohio State coach Thad Matta was left to acknowledge the potential pitfalls of nearly limitless potential.
Jealousies have doomed teams better and worse, and the Oden-fication of Ohio State's veterans left open the issue of phenom envy.

Optimism reigns for new Buckeyes

Monday, April 09, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
The players making up the next generation of Buckeyes were on the phone with each other as the final seconds ticked off in Ohio State's 84-75 loss to Florida in the NCAA Tournament title game a week ago.
"We were saying, We need to get this national championship next year,' " said Canton GlenOak's Kosta Koufos, the 7-foot star of a five-player class ranked among the top 10 in the nation. "Coach Matta does a great job, and with the classes of '07, '08, '09, we're going to keep reloading and reloading."
No matter what happens with center Greg Oden, the Buckeyes will be deeper in the fourth year of Thad Matta's tenure at Ohio State than they've ever been. In the sophomore season of point guard Mike Conley Jr., they should be the Big Ten favorite and a preseason top 10 team.
