Iowa was knocking on the door, threatening to break through, after hurrying back from 15 points behind.
For a change ? a pleasant change for the Ohio State men?s basketball team ? Daequan Cook answered.

Buckeyes Not Worth Praises

NCAA Basketball

By Justin Verrier

Issue date: 1/22/07 Section: Sports

It seems as if the Ohio State Buckeyes can do no wrong this year.

It's now about halfway through the season and the No. 7 Buckeyes (16-3, 4-1 Big Ten) have been downed three times. Yet, no matter how bad, or how many times they lose, ESPN analysts and sports writers nationwide, for some reason or another, find anything they can to applaud their performance.

The guy is writing for the UConn paper. Im guessing with the way the Huskies are playing this year, he's looking for a story elsewhere. He doesn't count IU as a good win even though they beat the Huskies at their place. He also seems to think that having less than a month to get into game shape should have been enough to dominate against Floridas big men. We were overated at the beginning of the season for sure, but I can't really think of a team right now that I would rank ahead of where we are. Woulda been nice if he had suggested some so we could understand his reasoning.

Matta: Buckeyes fans should roar for basketball, too

Saturday, January 27, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
His team at 17-3, 5-1 in the Big Ten, ranked fifth in the country and with freshman center Greg Oden starting to dominate, Ohio State coach Thad Matta admitted Friday that Buckeyes fans are "shifting into basketball mode now."
For anyone not shifting, Matta's ready to help.

OSU, MSU set standard high for the rematch
BY JIM NAVEAU - Jan. 29, 2007

COLUMBUS ? When Travis Walton found out that the person he was talking to was going to be seeing his first game at Michigan State?s Breslin Center this Saturday, he had some advice.
?You?re going to have fun at the Breslin. Our crowd is kind of crazy,? he said.
It?s hard to imagine that the rematch between Ohio State and Michigan State in men?s basketball this Saturday night could be any better than the first round was on Saturday night at a sold-out and loud Value City Arena.
Ohio State and Shawnee?s Jamar Butler got the better of Michigan State and Lima Senior?s Walton on Saturday night. But just barely.
After jumping out to a 20-point halftime lead, the Buckeyes had to survive a potentially game-winning 3-point attempt in the final seconds to pull out a 66-64 win.

OHIO STATE MEN
Big Buckeyes, big possibilities

Saturday, February 03, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Next season, Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter expects to get a real feel for Ohio State's Othello Hunter.
"He's going to have his time next year," Painter said after Wednesday's 78-60 loss to the Buckeyes. "Right now he's kind of playing a role for them, but he's a big ol' kid who can really score the ball and block shots and rebound."

Buckeyes coach prefers inclusion

Tuesday, February 06, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Fans unable to find Ohio State merchandise celebrating the most talented recruiting class in Buckeye basketball history can blame "Gunsmoke."
Ohio State coach Thad Matta was named after the character Thad Greenwood from the television western. As the Buckeyes coach was pulling together Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., Daequan Cook, David Lighty and Othello Hunter as a five-man class, it didn't take long for the group to be tabbed with a nickname modified from the most famous freshman class of all time, the 1991-92 Michigan group that came to prominence as the Fab Five.
So began the Thad Five. Now Matta wishes it would end.

Fab Five vs. Thad Five

Tuesday, February 06, 2007

With Michigan coming to Columbus tonight, it's time to compare the most famous recruiting classes in the history of both schools and how they performed in their first year on campus, 15 years apart.
The Wolverines' overall record wasn't as good, but they did reach the NCAA final, so Ohio State has some work to do.

Men's Basketball Quotes - Feb. 5, 2007

Feb. 5, 2007 Head coach Thad Matta
On Ohio State
"Offensively we are better with our execution, but we still have a long way to go. Having patience to get the shot we want is a sign of us getting better. We have made more consecutive stops when we needed them and our activity is more consistent, but we are still growing and we have a lot of areas to hone in on. We came together as a team after playing in the environment we faced at Michigan State. Physically and mentally I like where the team is. Hopefully we can keep rotating guys in so we stay fresh."
