Men's Basketball Buckeye Tidbits 2006-2007 Season

Power Rankings...

9.
Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1)

I'm ready to slip the Buckeyes back into the rankings after seeing Greg Oden's debut. My favorite thing about the tale of his medical clearance (thanks, Seth Davis) was the collegiate realism of the setting where he received the "You're Good to Go" call: Oden was shopping at a Target store. When they make the Greg Oden Movie, starring a 69-year-old Morgan Freeman as a 19-year-old Oden, I'm sure they'll alter that Target scene into something more dramatic. Like, a scene of him doing one-handed lefty pushups to Rocky montage music and getting interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone.

Next three: 12/9 vs. Cleveland State, 12/16 at Cincinnati, 12/19 vs. Iowa State.

Men's Basketball
Hoops Week in Review
By Tony Gerdeman
This week's edition of the Hoops Week in Review is dedicated to Brady Quinn. There, now you've won something meaningful.
Recapping the Buckeyes' Week
It was a one-game week, and it was a victorious week at that, as the Buckeyes defeated Cleveland State 78-57 on Saturday. Greg Oden was again disappointing...if you're the rest of the nation. Oden was perfect from the field, going 8-8 en route to a 16-point day. The Buckeyes out-rebounded the Vikings 44-18, included in that was a career-high ten for Ivan Harris. It wasn't always the prettiest game, but it did show that the Buckeyes are very capable of playing half-court basketball.
Buckeye of the Week
Othello Hunter. Hunter only played thirteen minutes against Cleveland State, but those thirteen minutes were the model of efficiency. Hunter found the time to score seventeen points and grab eleven rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Hunter ran well, and was the beneficiary of crisp passing and open lanes. If you prorate his numbers over forty minutes, he would've finished with 52 points and 34 rebounds. There was some concern about his minutes with Oden back; however, if he continues to be this productive, he'll see more of the court once the Big Ten season starts.
Additional Buckeye Thoughts
Ivan Harris has seen the writing on the wall and it reads "Rebound or sit." With Greg Oden back, Othello Hunter won't get the minutes at center that he has to this point, meaning that he'll be looking for minutes at power forward. In order to keep Hunter from taking his minutes, Ivan Harris now has to rebound like he never has in his life. On Saturday, he did just that, pulling down the aforementioned career-high ten rebounds. For the season, he's averaging 4.4 rebounds per game. That may not seem like much, but keep in mind, the highest number of rebounds he had in any game last season was four.
I've mentioned that Mike Conley Jr. is on the road to becoming the best point guard in Ohio State history. This past weekend he flew past Alex Davis like Davis was standing still. Next on the horizon? I think I see Curtis Wilson off in the distance.
Magic Number for an NCAA Championship - 28 Wins
Big Ten Week In Review
Michigan 2-0 last week: wins over Miami (OH) (62-56) and Delaware State (70-43); 10-1 this season
Wisconsin 2-0 last week: wins over Winthrop (82-79) and Marquette (70-66); 9-1 this season
Ohio State 1-0 last week: a win over Cleveland State (78-57); 8-1 this season
Purdue 2-0 last week: wins over Loyola-Chicago (78-62) and Missouri (79-62); 8-1 this season
Illinois 2-0 last week: wins over IUPUI (87-59) and Illinois-Chicago (71-66); 9-2 this season
Michigan State 2-0 last week: wins over IPFW (80-43) and BYU (76-61); 9-2 this season
Northwestern 1-0 last week: a win over Western Michigan (77-75); 5-2 this season
Penn State 1-1 last week: a win over Hartford (56-55) and a loss at Seton Hall (69-59); 6-3 this season

Iowa 1-1 last week: a loss to N. Iowa (57-55) and a win over Iowa State (77-59); 5-5 this season
Minnesota 1-2 last week: losses to UAB (88-81) and Ark. Little Rock (67-66) and a win over S. Dakota St. (77-53); 4-7 this season
Big Ten Notes
Purdue power forward Carl Landry continues to dominate. In two games last week, he was 14-18 from the field and took 29 foul shots. He averaged 22.5 points per game and ten rebounds per game. He was also the main reason the 8-1 Boilermakers handed the previously unbeaten Missouri Tigers a 17-point loss. Purdue should be ranked shortly. They've got a smart team and a talented young coach. They very well could be the third best team in the conference by the time March rolls around.
Wisconsin forward Alando Tucker has apparently decided to get himself ready for his career in the NBA. No longer is he a skinny 6'6" power forward, jumping all over the lane, getting fouls called simply because he's bouncing all over the paint. It seems that he has worked on his jump shot, and while it's not yet as consistent as he would like, he has more confidence in it than ever before. And, for the first time since he was a freshman, he's actually making over half of his shots. Since he is concentrating more on the wing this year, his rebounding is suffering a bit. He's averaging 3.9 rebounds per game, down from around six per game for his career. Also, his free throw attempts are way down as well. It will be interesting to see if he doesn't get more aggressive in the paint as the Big Ten season gets started.
I always enjoy the annual Indiana-Kentucky game, but it was tough viewing this year. Indiana just doesn't have it yet, but they still stuck with Kentucky throughout the game. Which should tell you something about Kentucky. Right now, the Hoosiers are struggling to score. And even though power forward D.J. White is back, there are still plenty of issues for Indiana. Namely, consistency everywhere White isn't.
Remember watching the Illinois game last year when we were all impressed by freshman point guard Chester Frazier? He was the little dude running all over the place creating havoc like he was the Hamburglar of basketball. Anyway, now that Dee Brown is gone, the team is Frazier's. And he's doing well. Sure, he's still learning, but you can see that he's going to be pretty good. He's averaging 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. He already has three double-digit assist games. He does, however, turn the ball over. And he still needs to develop a consistent shot. But who knows if they'll even ask him to do that. Dee Brown was there for four years and they never asked him to find some consistency. If Frazier wants to be better than Dee Brown, he'd do well to take a hint from the two backcourt mates of Brown that are actually thriving in the NBA--Deron Williams and Luther Head. Both of them could actually shoot.
Game of the Week
Texas 76 - LSU 75 (OT). The Longhorns came into this game unranked and again started four freshmen and a sophomore. The LSU Tigers came in ranked 11th in the country. The game was close throughout. In fact, in the final seventeen minutes and overtime, the largest lead was four points. LSU's Garrett Temple hit a three with 21 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game at 68. Texas freshman guard D.J. Augustin scored a career-high 25 points, but his jumper with nine seconds to play wouldn't fall. The overtime period started quiet, but with 1:45 to play A.J. Abrams hit a three to give Texas a 73-72 lead. On LSU's next possession, Tasmin Mitchell hit a three to give LSU a 75-73 lead. Seventeen seconds later, Abrams hit another three to give Texas the lead for good, at 76-75. The last 43 seconds saw layups and putbacks missed by LSU's Glen Davis. Perhaps this is why Garrett Temple didn't even look Davis' way when LSU had the ball with nine seconds to play and he put up a 23-footer with three seconds left. The shot was off, "Big Baby" fell to the floor, and Texas walked off victorious. It was an indicator of what's to come from an incredibly young Longhorn team.
Team of the Week
Drexel. Drexel only played one game last week, but they went into Villanova and pulled off a huge upset, winning 81-76. Villanova led 45-38 at the half, and looked to be on their way, but Drexel inexplicably dug in their heels and outscored Nova 43-31 in the second half. No, Villanova isn't the same team as last year, but c'mon. Drexel?
Player of the Week
Tennessee guard Chris Lofton. The Vols only played once last week, but it was against 17th-ranked Memphis. In a game that saw more poor shooting than a Roger Corman film, Lofton hit 12-18 from the field, including 6-11 from three. He scored 34 points in 34 minutes and led the Volunteers to a fairly easy 76-58 win. I'm not all that enthralled with Memphis this season, but Lofton's performance was impressive no matter the competition.
Some Things Without a Category
Maybe I'm way off base here, but when was the last time Mike Krzyzewski developed a player? It seems that if a player doesn't come in and play well from the outset, he'll never see meaningful minutes. Think I'm crazy? Why doesn't the guy ever have a bench? He only ever has seven or eight players that contribute. You wonder why players always seem like they've been at Duke forever? It's because they've been playing from day one. Everybody else transfers or sits. Look at North Carolina. Forward Rayshawn Terry can't see the court his first two seasons, then last year he's one of the leaders on the team. The Tar Heels don't have a bench, they have waves. They bring in wave after wave. Duke, on the other hand, brings in Brian Zoubek.
Notre Dame guard Russell Carter scored a career-high 27 points in a 99-85 win over 5th-ranked Alabama on Thursday. Carter was 6-11 from three and was the reason Alabama could never get back into the game. Last season, Notre Dame was always fun to watch because the games were close and they always found a way to lose. This season, they already have two wins over top twenty opponents, and their only loss so far was a two-point game against a hot Butler team a month ago. In other words, Notre Dame is much less fun to watch this season.
For the second time this season, VMI lost a game when scoring over 100 points. Congratulations, you haters of defense. Though, to be fair, they did hold mighty Lees McRae to 75 points, while scoring 135 themselves. Any time you can hold Lees McRae under 80, you're doing something right. I assume.
In Summation...
Third place is second loser...The Vikings bowed down to Oden...Is Ivan Harris the new Dennis Rodman?...Michigan is the worst 10-1 team in America...Minnesota is the worst 4-7 team in America...Unless the Browns are 4-7, that is...Chester Frazier?s catchphrase is "rubble rubble rubble"...Texas is getting better by the second...Seriously, Drexel?...Maybe if Coach K would spend more time on developing players instead of teaching the "proper" way to slide into a charge, Duke wouldn't fade down the stretch...VMI hates defense like PETA hates delicious steak...Lees McRae is the poor-man's Gardner-Webb, but more rustic sounding...Like if Lorne Greene had a college named after him.

From that article...

?One of the favorite things we do as part of Special Olympics are these clinics,?? said Debbie Hesse, president and chief executive officer for Special Olympics Indiana. ?It?s very important to see some of these athletes work with our athletes.
?At the beginning, there?s a little bit of uncomfortableness. At the end, there?s kind of a bond that forms. It sounds a little corny, but it?s pretty heartwarming.??

Ohio State players were not allowed to speak to the media. Among those participating were former Lawrence North High stars Greg Oden and Mike Conley.

I wonder if a certain kilogram-challenged football coach heard the message in that!

Ohio State has look of NCAA title contender

Martin Renzhofer
The Salt Lake Tribune

Article Last Updated: 12/21/2006 01:04:52 AM MST

An ESPN online poll Tuesday found 53 percent of voters believed Ohio State was not going to win the national championship this season.
The poll wasn't about the Buckeye's top-ranked football team, which is a strong favorite to win its second Bowl Championship Series trophy in four years. No, it concerned the OSU basketball team, ranked third and featuring arguably the most talented 7-footer in the country, freshman Greg Oden.
While it is easy to dismiss Ohio State as a basketball power - it hasn't won a national championship since 1960 when the team included Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek and a feisty sixth man named Robert Knight - Oden is doing his level best to change those perceptions.

The attached (zipped) excel file is a little project of mine where I've been tracking statistics for this season. It's not earth shattering, nor particularly fancy, but it's been rather useful in noticing trends and just keeping an eye on how the fellas have been performing. Just thought I'd share.
