Marvel Cinematic Universe

Well I can see this review is going to be as popular as a taco fart in an elevator, but...next was Spider-Man: Homecoming, as I’m trying to squeeze in as many as I can before the NCAAs start. I certainly didn’t hate it. Michael Keaton always adds to a film, and Marissa Tomei is a national treasure. The “kids” were more hit and miss, which is always the case when adults play HS kids. The large kid that was a friend of Peters worked, the 26 YO girlfriend of Klay Thompson as the HS love interest liking nerdy guys not so much. And as much as I like Jon Favreau, him as the Avengers focus is a bit too much of that character for me. The dude playing Spidey was good. I thought the first 1/3 of the movie was boring, the last 10 minutes were spectacular, and the rest was decent. Him clinging to a flying plane was a bit much for me though. I don’t know if MK is back for the next one, but I hope so in some capacity. So overall, decent entry, but not in the top 10 for me. Down to Strange and then heading home with Ragnorok and Infinity Wars.

So, the basketball tournament starts tonight, so since my wife was watching her Outlander bullshit last night, I went ahead and hit Dr. Strange. I can certainly see why Loveland said it was “out there”, this was one you either liked or didn’t, I imagine. Thing is, I am a neuro guy, been studying the brain for over 20 years, work with neurosurgeons myself…so this was pretty much my jam, especially since I accept that there are things (whatever they are, maybe not as apefuck as this ) that we don’t understand at all. The story was certainly on the fantasy side of the MCU, but after so much exposure to Thor and the celestial beings and the infinity stones and whatever the hell GoTG is, that was deadened a bit. The funny thing is this movie was full of tropes, so full in fact it almost had to be intentional, yet it all somehow worked. I think to like this movie you had to follow the Ancient One’s advice early on: “Forget what you think you understand”, and then it was much easier to just enjoy. Cast was A+++, Cumberbatch is always on, McAdams doesn’t do anything for me physically, and they didn’t flesh out her character much, but she has plenty of acting chops. Supporting roles were excellent, particularly Mordo and Wong. Mads was fabulous as always and of course nothing need be said about Tilda the Magnificent. Excellent use of the infinity stone, probably my favorite use of them so far (the Tesseract was convoluted and spanned too many movies to figure out for me, for example). They’ve clearly learned a lot from making the first few films and seem to reveal a bit more in a single film now without giving it all away. It’s difficult to see how everything fits together, but I do like how subsequent movies add additional Avengers (I imagine from the credits Strange is in Ragnarok), so maybe it will piece together a little better heading into the big one.

All in all this was enjoyable for me, not on the MCU Mount Rushmore but definitely on the marquis in line with the other originals that I like so much and CA-WS. Headed homeward now, Ragnarok is my final Blu-ray and then off to Netflix for the big war with Thanos. Unfortunately the NCAA tournament is going to get in the way some.

I stand corrected. Glad you enjoyed Dr. Strange. Now I need to get you to revamp that Thor: Dark World rating. 8D

I just want a post-credit scene in Endgame that teases the X-Men. Maybe something as simple as Peter Parker coming into class, his teacher mentions him being late again, and then assigns him a new student as a lab partner. Peter goes and sits down at the lab desk and his new partner, a small brunette, introduces herself at Kathryn, but everyone calls her Kitty.
