Marvel Cinematic Universe

So, the basketball tournament starts tonight, so since my wife was watching her Outlander bullshit last night, I went ahead and hit Dr. Strange. I can certainly see why Loveland said it was “out there”, this was one you either liked or didn’t, I imagine. Thing is, I am a neuro guy, been studying the brain for over 20 years, work with neurosurgeons myself…so this was pretty much my jam, especially since I accept that there are things (whatever they are, maybe not as apefuck as this ) that we don’t understand at all. The story was certainly on the fantasy side of the MCU, but after so much exposure to Thor and the celestial beings and the infinity stones and whatever the hell GoTG is, that was deadened a bit. The funny thing is this movie was full of tropes, so full in fact it almost had to be intentional, yet it all somehow worked. I think to like this movie you had to follow the Ancient One’s advice early on: “Forget what you think you understand”, and then it was much easier to just enjoy. Cast was A+++, Cumberbatch is always on, McAdams doesn’t do anything for me physically, and they didn’t flesh out her character much, but she has plenty of acting chops. Supporting roles were excellent, particularly Mordo and Wong. Mads was fabulous as always and of course nothing need be said about Tilda the Magnificent. Excellent use of the infinity stone, probably my favorite use of them so far (the Tesseract was convoluted and spanned too many movies to figure out for me, for example). They’ve clearly learned a lot from making the first few films and seem to reveal a bit more in a single film now without giving it all away. It’s difficult to see how everything fits together, but I do like how subsequent movies add additional Avengers (I imagine from the credits Strange is in Ragnarok), so maybe it will piece together a little better heading into the big one.

All in all this was enjoyable for me, not on the MCU Mount Rushmore but definitely on the marquis in line with the other originals that I like so much and CA-WS. Headed homeward now, Ragnarok is my final Blu-ray and then off to Netflix for the big war with Thanos. Unfortunately the NCAA tournament is going to get in the way some.

Well, I was so excited about the Buckeyes winning last night I didn’t feel like sleeping, so I popped in Thor Ragnarok. Another A+ cast going in, and this film gets an extra half point right off the bat for writing out Natalie Portman and her assistant. Kate Blanchett is among the all time elite, and she didn’t disappoint here. And the woman who plays Valkyrie, holy God yes please, can she be any hotter in that role? Also the humor from the rock guy was hit or miss, but an overall positive, and the humor throughout worked a lot more than it didn’t. Thor and Loki always seemed to bring this back whenever it started going off the rails, and their complicated dynamic is an MCU highlight. The story was good, I didn’t really go for the whole Jeff Goldblum character, it was sort of too much of the Collector (yes I know they’re related) and it was over the top for me. However, to add in Hulk and give us Valkyrie? Plus. Pacing was good, and MCU is always fun outside of earth in general. Overall another strong entry, and now I have reached the summit...let the Infinity War begin.

Also, question about Ragnarök...Hella wiped out his inner circle, but what happened to the Asgardian hottie he had sexual tension with (I forget her name)...did I miss her demise? Why wasn’t she there?

Lady Sif...she wasn't in it because Jaime Alexander is a pain in the ass errrrrrrr I mean her TV show schedule didn't give her an opportunity to be in it.

I can agree with everything but goldblum, I think he was A+ and I want more of him.

As much as I loved the comedy, I think it went one step too far in the final scene when everything went boom

Well, games were blowouts last night, so it was time to do the Infinity War. I’ll do details in the next post with spoiler tags, i don’t know if everyone was doing that primarily for my benefit but I appreciate the shit out of it because it wasn’t what I was expecting going in, so I was somewhat surprised by some things. I am still processing it all, but I will say fuck every asshole critic who reviewed this film. Every one. Because some of the stupid shit I see are things like “you had to see and process all 18 other films to know what was going on”...well no fucking shit Sherlock, this wasn’t an ID4 stand-alone, this was the culmination of about 50 story lines that actually went somewhere and successfully intertwined. This film boldly went where “Super hero” films just don’t go. More on that later. Cast was mostly the same as the other films, but Brolin was such a maestro as a complex and, dare I say measured Thanos, enough compliments can’t be given. I wondered how in the hell they were going to bring everyone together, yet they managed to find clever ways to do that too. A lot of the plot will depend on how they wrap it up in Endgame, but as a cumulative entry, this really couldn’t have been any better. The question of what happens when the bad guy doesn’t just think he’s right, he thinks he’s the good guy? is so hard to pull off, but this film, and it’s uncomfortable ending, did just that.
