Marvel Cinematic Universe

Buddy of mine is a huge comic nerd. Admittedly, as much as I love and enjoy the films, that is about as far as it goes for me. Save for some interest in Venom, Deadpool and Spawn.

That said, we were wondering if a potential way Disney could introduce the X-men into the MCU would be by having those snapped being exposed to the energy signature of the soul stone. Without them being technical I remember that the MCU had quicksilver and scarlett given their powers by experiments involving the scepter/mind stone... correct? Perhaps being exposed to the SS, wiped away, then brought back somehow activates a mutation in certain people with a genetic marker?

I don't know. I got done with work super early today and started a little day drinking. So we got to talking about Endgame and that came up.

And then came Avengers: Age of Ultron. I was not a big fan of this one to be honest. This one lacked the quality interaction between the characters that the first one had, it was forced and somewhat trite in the dialogue. The whole Widow/Banner this is kinda meh. And this was a jumbled mess of trying to introduce too many new characters. They would have been fine with the twins or Vision, but they did them both and rushed through Strucker too, along with the whole Ultron concept, which wasn’t fleshed out enough. And Hawkeye has a farmhouse...OK. Just didn’t do a lot for me, felt like the actors were even kind of mailing it in, although I think SJ was probably the strongest. Disappointed in this one, way below the quality of the first one.

So next up was Ant Man. I knew less about this guy than the others (but more than I know about Strange) so I was interested in this expose. I thought the first 1/3 was pretty slow, and the “final battle” was kinda meh, but in between I thought it was good. The acting was good, Michael Douglas was passable and Corey Stoll is always solid. They played off the sexual tension between he and Hope well without carrying it too far. The concept of a mad scientist trying to figure out the Pym particle was good. And good use of the woman from CAFA again as Shield founder. They also left open the intriguing Wasp angle, which was a good way to set up another film. These are the kind of things MCU gets that DC doesn’t. All in all, pretty decent flick with some decent action and humor. Next up is Civil War, which I get the feeling is critical for the story.

1. Marvel’s Avengers (5/5)
2. Black Panther (5/5)
3. Captain America: The First Avenger (4.5/5)
4. Iron Man (4.5/5)
5. Captain America: Winter Soldier (4.5/5)
6. Guardians of the Galaxy (4/5)
7. Ant Man (4/5)
8. Avengers: Age of Ultron (3.5/5)
9. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (3.5/5)
10. Thor (3.5/5)
11. Incredible Hulk (3/5)
12. Iron Man III (2.5/5)
13. Iron Man II (2.5/5)
14. Thor: Dark World (2/5)

Welp, last night it was Civil War. And I have to say, save one element, I was not disappointed. This story went where very few go, and to have Zemo as sort of a human Loki equivalent pulling the strings was sheer brilliance. The story was fantastic, dealing with all kinds of modern day and more adult themes. The fact that death was felt by the superheroes was enough to rank it near the top, but the conflict put it over the top...almost. The one thing I detested...Peter Parker. I don’t hate the character, I don’t hate Spider Man, but this was an adult movie with a serious tone, so this was the absolute worst time to introduce him. His cheeseball dialogue was atrocious in the context of a guy getting paralyzed and a war between Avengers going on. And I think it took away from Starks obvious impending internal destruction. So, I can’t rank it above Avengers for that reason. But I put it above the rest of them. Only other question: why did BP not take War Machine to Wakanda to heal him?

Daniel Brühl was a revelation coming out of Civil War for me. He was so good in The Alienist on TNT.

Also, you've mentioned everybody but Paul Rudd in your last two reviews (Ant-Man and Civil War). Dude was born to play Ant-Man like RDJ was IronMan or Ryan Reynolds was Deadpool. Rudd nails the part.

Can't be taking everyone in that needed help. Tony probably already had him shipped off to wherever he was getting tested so no reason for Tchalla to come in and swoop him. Guessing he saw capt and a 1 armed bucky limping out and decided he needed some serious help as his mind has been put into a blender too many times

I'll disagree with you about Spiderman, but I won't fight about it. I think the humor and all that still works because even though it was serious, up until the end they weren't really trying to kill each other, just stop them. Caps side had a funny ant man and Tony's had a funny Spiderman

Perfectly balanced, as all things should be

Well I can see this review is going to be as popular as a taco fart in an elevator, but...next was Spider-Man: Homecoming, as I’m trying to squeeze in as many as I can before the NCAAs start. I certainly didn’t hate it. Michael Keaton always adds to a film, and Marissa Tomei is a national treasure. The “kids” were more hit and miss, which is always the case when adults play HS kids. The large kid that was a friend of Peters worked, the 26 YO girlfriend of Klay Thompson as the HS love interest liking nerdy guys not so much. And as much as I like Jon Favreau, him as the Avengers focus is a bit too much of that character for me. The dude playing Spidey was good. I thought the first 1/3 of the movie was boring, the last 10 minutes were spectacular, and the rest was decent. Him clinging to a flying plane was a bit much for me though. I don’t know if MK is back for the next one, but I hope so in some capacity. So overall, decent entry, but not in the top 10 for me. Down to Strange and then heading home with Ragnorok and Infinity Wars.
