Ohio State Opens As a 40.5-Point Favorite Over Marshall Following the Bye Week Ahead of the Buckeyes' Third Game of the Season

149089_h.jpg

After surrendering only six points across the team's first pair of games, Ohio State emerged from its bye week as a 40.5-point favorite against the Marshall Thundering Herd ahead of only the third-ever meeting between the schools next Saturday.

While the line opened at 40.5 points, it dropped across several sportsbooks after opening. As of 3 p.m. Sunday, the line sat at 39.5 on DraftKings and 38.5 on FanDuel.

The projected margin represents the second-largest spread the Buckeyes have seen in favor of themselves so far this season. Ohio State currently owns a 1-1 record against the spread after failing to cover an ambitious 48.5 points against Akron in the opener before successfully winning by more than 37.5 points against Western Michigan the following week.

Meanwhile, the total opened at 51.5, the lowest for a Buckeye football game so far in the 2024 campaign. Despite the shallow tally projected between the teams, overs have narrowly cashed in each of Ohio State's games so far by 1.5 points in each contest.

Absolutely a great catch

Marshall's Passing Efficiency last Saturday, including that catch:

70.29

And that's against a Virginia Tech defense that was shredded by Vanderbilt. The Commodores had a higher PE vs Va Tech than they did against the FCS school they played, which would suggest that Va Tech's pass defense is terrible. And Marshall threw for a PE of less than 75.

Woof

While Marshall may appear to have a decent running game (6.55 yards per carry, ranked 9 places higher than the Buckeyes nationally), most of that is because their running back A.J. Turner popped a 69 yard run against the Hokies and an 80 yarder against Stony Brook. I like the Buckeyes chances of preventing the big plays and keeping Turner bottled up.

I would set the odds of Ohio State continuing to hold opponents out of the red zone through this game at even money.

Do you use the NCAA site to compile stats, or do you have a different site?

Ryan Day Compliments Marshall's Defensive Front, Reviews Progress Made During Ohio State's Bye Week

149121_h.jpg

  • On the biggest thing the team accomplished during the bye: "Just that we get better and that we continue to improve. ... We stayed in our routine. We came in on Sunday, we practiced Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday."
  • Day enjoyed getting out to watch some high school football this weekend. "It's a reminder of why you started coaching way back when. To see Friday Night Lights, it's just great to see the coaches, the players ... how important high school football is for so many people."
  • On how you lean on team leaders to keep the focus during a bye week: "It starts with the coaches, and then it goes to the leaders, and then it goes from there, but yeah, we've got to set the tempo on this thing, set the pace, set the intensity. ... The coaches lead the way, the leaders lead the way, and then everyone else will follow."
  • Day went through what Ohio State works on during its week of practice. Tuesday is about first and second down, turnovers and explosives, then as the week goes on the team focuses on a lot of situations, third-downs, red zone, etc.
  • On whether offensive and defensive coaches break down each others' film: "You like to have each side of the ball break down the other side and break down a report of what they're seeing ... it's mostly information for the coordinators."
  • On Marshall's defense under coordinator Jason Semore: "They do a nice job. They're sound in their scheme. They have good players, their front is good and strong and powerful. ... They had a week off as well and they're gonna come in here and play physical."
  • On if he can imagine what's going through other coaches’ minds watching games: "Oh yeah. ... You watch them for a lot of situations. You're watching to see situations ... the body types ... how they're competing. ... It's an opportunity to see it from a different perspective."
  • On watching football with his son RJ, a quarterback, and teaching: "It was great ... the coverages, what did you see? It was great."

Presser Bullets: Caleb Downs Focused on Safety Exclusively, Donovan Jackson Back for Ohio State

149131_h.jpg

  • On what Will Howard is improving at that others aren't seeing: "His demeanor. ... You're getting to see the command when you watch him play. ... It's good to see him getting more and more comfortable every day."
  • Lorenzo Styles Jr. is showing he wants to play more with his special teams performance. "The more and more trust you're building, you're earning an opportunity to do that. ... Somebody who is competing every day in practice ... he's getting his hands on balls."
  • While there's still progress to make, Day likes where the team's run game is at. "We always want to have a combination of zone schemes and gap schemes up front, we're starting to get there. ... The balance we had, the energy we played with a couple of weeks ago is what we're looking for."
  • On Quinshon Judkins: "He's learned the offense. There's certain things that's different than what he came from. ... Just getting started but you can see what he can do with the ball in his hands and the explosiveness, the power he has when he runs ... but you can see what a weapon he is for us when he's out there."
  • On what his gameday watching experience was like: "The games start at noon and we all just needed to get our feet up and rest a little bit. ... You just watch, you watch the coaches, you watch the body types, you watch demeanor. ... It's healthy to do that."
  • Ohio State's signal callers have been learning things quickly. "All of our quarterbacks pick things up quickly and that's important."
  • Day said that Caleb Downs will only be seen at running back if it's an absolute emergency at this stage. "Right now we're focused on Caleb being the best safety in America. ... Our depth is going to be tested all year, so he'll be involved if need be, but for now he's focused on safety."
  • On special teams: "I feel much more involved in it, much more in control of it than I was in the past. ... That's a phase that can be critical in some of those situations. We're gonna keep grinding on it. ... We're not where we need to be but we are showing good effort there."
  • Day confirmed Donovan Jackson is set to play this week. "He's ready to roll."
  • Day liked what he saw from Austin Siereveld in the first two games of the season."That's provided us some depth we didn't know we had entering the season."
  • On what he's seen from Marshall: "They have a very good staff. Coach Huff is very well respected. ... He gets his guys to play hard. They're athletic, they have a big front on the defensive side. ... They're gonna come in here and they're gonna play open and free."
  • On Howard's success on play-action pass: "It starts with the runs, when you're running the ball, now (the defense) has to be more aggressive. ... The work, the timing we've put in on some of those concepts ... then there's the RPOs. ... Just about every play, you want to put somebody in conflict. ... I think the timing has been good so far."
  • On what he's seen from Jelani Thurman: "His ability to be coached ... he keeps playing the next play, he doesn't let the last play affect him. ... His attention to detail has been better. ... He's locked in, he's got questions, he's got answers. ... If he can keep building on that and keep growing, the sky is the limit for him."
  • Deploying Siereveld as a sixth offensive lineman is not off the table, Day said.
  • Day reiterated that Donovan Jackson could have played in an emergency and says most medical decisions are left up to doctors. "Donovan came back for a reason. He wants some hardware. He wants to play. It took everything we had to hold him back."
  • Day puts himself in other coaches' shoes when watching games. "You try to use that as an opportunity to play that in your head. ... When you have an opportunity to watch a game, you're looking for those things."
  • On what he liked from Marvin Harrison Jr. in Week 2 for the Arizona Cardinals: "He's gonna have a great career in the NFL. ... He's just such a pro, he's gonna translate very well in the league. Just the beginning."
  • Day is in the group chat Nebraska coach Matt Rhule discussed. He said that it's mainly for everyone to be on the same page for coming rule changes.
  • Day confirmed that Tegra Tshabola is the starting right guard moving forward. "He is the starter and he's played good football. ... We're gonna try to find ways to get Austin in the game because he's earned that."
  • On the offensive line's improvements: "We all saw a bunch of guys who play hard. ... Trust your technique. The communication was better and I thought the effort was very, very good. But I also think there's a certain level of confidence."
Just sayin': Clink on link to see Chip Kelly and Will Howard's comments.

We're usually rusty coming off a bye. Wouldn't be shocked if this looks more like Akron instead of WMU
Was thinking the same… Im half way expecting to get called Bukipower on Saturday by a few guys here lol.

Actually just kidding I can’t have any pregame drinks this week.

But still, I wouldn’t be shocked if we are “disappointed” with a 42-12 kind of win. Where Marshall kicks 4 field goals.
